Partition suddenly going into read-only status

I recently had my SuSE 10.0 installation have its root partition go into read-only mode - It was proposed that my disk is going bad. I rebooted and everything is fine after the reboot. No, nothing changed. It just suddenly went into read-only mode. Any ideas? Thanks, LDB

Interesting

After subscribing to this list a few weeks ago I have noticed several things interesting about it: * It generates more messages by far that any other list. Thank God I have a decent email client. * It serves to remind me daily of the nature of puter geeks (I have been one since 1979), which is to always tell someone how to build a watch when they ask for the time. * Along that line is the generation of massive amounts of chaff which has to be sifted through to get to the answer, sort of like picking fly shit out of pepper. * I view all this as some kind of late-in-life penance for the sins of my youth. * In spite of all the above, I am slowly amassing a filtered list of worthwhile reference data that is actually useful and I just want to say "Thank you" to all of you who are helping in the effort. Daylight Saving time change?

Hi all, This seems really silly, but Daylight Saving time is ended, and I can't work out how to get my computer to notice. I thought it would have just known, as has happened in the past, but it's still concienciously showing MDT time rather than MST. I tried to use Yast to correct this, and the only thing on offer to me are other major timezones, nothing for Daylight saving. It might be part of the puzzle, though I don't quite see how, that I run an ntp client (because my laptop's clock is dreadfully inaccurate--I suspect a failing CMOS support battery or something). swap

One command I miss from my old Unix days is the ability to add swap dynamically. That is swap to a file. Some of the Unix's have a swap command and you can name a file and the size you wish and swap will start using it. This can be pretty handy for someone who doubles their RAM after and OS has been installed and wants swap to follow the yellow brick road even if the machine never swaps. I did a man on swap but nothing came back!

Update Problem

Just reinstalled Suse 10.1 because Xen 3.0.3 compile screwed up my machine, now, suse updater or Yast online update come up with error: Transaction failed: Need media 1: File ./rpm/x86_64/binutils-2.16.91.0.5-23.5.x86_64.rpm not found on media: http://ftp.kddilabs.jp/Linux/packages/SuSE/suse/update/10.1 I checked the website and sure enough, there are no rpms for X86_64. Running the online update setup again, still comes up with the same error. Where is the file I can edit to change the mirror and what mirror schould I use (I am in Taiwan)? Art

How do I block certain senders in Postfix?

Further to my post a few weeks or so ago, how do I block emails from being accepted by postfix. The emails in particular are from one of 2 different IP addresses. I suppose I could block only those 2, or perhaps the entire range if need be. I read a bit on this in the docs, but am unsure if I should make a "hash" for it, or use canonical, and if so, how. I do have a hash for check_recipient_access which is working great. But I don't know how to block a particular IP address for a sender. I'm running Suse 10.0, mostly standard postfix. [opensuse] Verifying copied files - Global Settings and singular command switch

In DOS there was the ability to verify a singular files integrity by using chkdsk c:/file.dos......The result indicated if the file integrity was so. There was also the ability to set in the Autoexec.bat set verify=ON - which made sure that EVERY file that you copied you did not need to use the verify option C:\file.dos C:\temp\file.dos /v My questions are 1. Is there a global set verify=on in Linux? 2. Is there the ability to verify a single files integrity as above with a similar command such as chkdsk 3. How do I copy a file at the command line and include a verify option. The reason I ask is that I recently lost my home directory and I had KDAR backing up the /home directory every week to an NFS drive. When I came to restore the archive the files header was reported to be corrupted. Also as a backup I copied with Konqueror the /home directory to an NFS drive and some of the files are aslo now not readable due corruption. I have made an Enhancement report to both Konqueror and KDAR that they include a verify option like most backup programs. Over many years I have seen backups unable to be restored because verify was not turned on. Now its happened to me. I understand the file system in Linux is far superior in its disk I/O but I dont want to waste time backing up if I cannot ensure the files are intact. The current backup GUI's do not include a verify option and the only one that does 'cpio do not hav a GUI and due to the complexity of options available it is rather unfriendly. I have made a wish list item in opensuse to for someone to write a GUI for cpio which will also address a request to have the ability to backup to tape. regards to all from down under in OZ Scott

postfix configuration

I'm trying to modify my postfix configuration so that it will modify the sending domain. I've done this on my red hat box by setting the following in /etc/postfix/main.cf: main.cf:myhostname = www.3times25.net main.cf:mydomain = 3times25.net When I do the same on my SuSE box, it does not work. I know that there is a /etc/sysconfig/postfix configuration file on SuSE that does not exist on red hat, but I can't figure out if something there is overriding my settings in /etc/postfix/main.cf Anyone have any suggestions/insight? -- Until later, Geoffrey Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety. - Benjamin Franklin

[opensuse] Updating 10.1

Hi List; I posted to the suse-linux-e list with no response. Maybe that was the wrong list to start with? Yesterday pulled down the remastered 10.1 DVD ISO and installed 10.1 on a laptop I have to see if Its ready for me to upgrade. The install went fine however I am somewhat confused by the new zen updater instead of my SuSE Watcher. So, I have a few questions: - Does the zen updater pull only patches & fixes like the SuSE Watcher did ? If not where do I now get these types of updates? - What's the best way to update my system, does the zen updater do it all ? or is there a better/easier to manage method? - Both zen updater and Yast Sources only list my DVD drive. Where can I find a list of 10.2 repositories for both the zen updater and yast ? Do they both accept the same repos? I guess the short question is - how do I keep my system up to date and where can I find step by step (im kinda slow) documentation on how to configure my new 10.1 box for updates?
