XGL/Compiz and Mplayer

I've been playing with XGL/Compiz (in SUSE10.1) the last couple of days. It's working nicely... mostly. The one noticeable exception is with MPlayer. MPlayer works OK... sorta... as in it will play the videos I feed it, and I can do all the silly stuff like play a video around the ends of one desktop and onto the next. Where it is going "wrong" is the aspect ratio of the video. When I initially launch the video, it's stretched (for lack of a better term). And I mean really stretched. It's displaying at a ration of about 1 high to 40 wide. If I attempt to go full screen, it expands and zooms the video in on the top left corner of the video. If I maximize the window, it maximizes normally and the video is sized accordingly. The closest thing I can think of in comparison is with the older versions of Acrobat reader. If you didn't have the Desktop Dimensions set right in the xorg.conf file, it would display distorted PDFs (despite everything else working correctly). So... has anyone else bumped into this odd aspect ratio thing in XGL? Anyone know of any way to "preset" the aspect ratio? C. .

[opensuse] RE: Enabling Sound from a PC to another

I have a PC on the network that does not have speakers or a sound card. I think there is a way of sending its sound to another PC on the network or am I dreaming. I am getting into areas like the sysconfig editor and the services running in YAST and I am not really happy to experiment here as I do not as yet have that much experience or confidence yet - reading all the emals is helping alot. Can anyone help with this question. Many Thanks Scott

Upgrading RAM

I want to upgrade my RAM from the current 256MB. Now, I have heard that its wise to buy another 256MB chip and add it to the computer. Then what is called as the "Dual RAM Implementation" will come into effect, thus boosting the performance. I actually wished to buy another 512MB chip. no user login

Hi, having a problem logging back in as a user on my 10.1 box. Had this problem once before on 9.3 or 10.0 cant remember which, but it was because the home dir was full. Not the case this time as you can see below. signed in as root, changed my user login to auto, and and no password, tried it both ways, it still tries to login, then goes back to the login screen. I can only login as root. Would anyone have any ideas? If Carlos would note in my original reply that I said "... it's all relative", then some sense can be made of this mess about time, clocks, etc. First of all, any _nix system only knows the time if you tell it what it is (actually, that's true for any puter). The cmos clock on the mb is generally referred to as the hardware clock and can be read with "hwclock -r". In my system the hc value is tested against the settings in /etc/adjtime and the result is presented to the system for use: display, cron, etc. Here's the relative part: the system thinks it is default UTC, but you can have it believe anything. The correct UTC might be 3am but you can have it set to 9pm. All the system will do is apply local time zone offsets from its perceived utc value IF "local" is included in adjtime. So, don't say that a _nix internal clock is UTC when, in fact, it is whatever you want. UTC is French for Universal Coordinated Time, which is the politically correct way to say Greenwich Mean Time which, of course, refers to the old observatory and the might and extent of the British Empire. I, being Texan and not caring a hoot about anything British and especially not French, do not set my clock to London time. Semantics, anyone?

Hi List; Yesterday pulled down the remastered 10.1 DVD ISO and installed 10.1 on a laptop I have to see if Its ready for me to upgrade. The install went fine however I am somewhat confused by the new zen updater instead of my SuSE Watcher. I have a few questions: - Does the zen updater pull only patches & fixes like the SuSE Watcher did ? If not where do I now get these types of updates? - What's the best way to update my system, does the zen updater do it all ? or is there a better/easier to manage method? - Both zen updater and Yast Sources only list my DVD drive. Where can I find a list of 10.2 repositories for both the zen updater and yast ? Do they both accept the same repos? I guess the short question is - how do I keep my system up to date and where can I find step by step (im kinda slow) documentation on how to configure my new 10.1 box for updates?
