logrotate not rotating

I have a problem with logrotate not rotating the syslog files (message, mail, ...) It is rotating other files such as the Apache logs ok so I know it's being run. If I do logrotate -d it is actually checking the logs but not rotating them despite the files running back several months: rotating pattern: /var/log/warn /var/log/messages /var/log/allmessages /var/log/localmessages /var/log/firewall 4194304 bytes (99 rotations) empty log files are not rotated, old logs are removed considering log /var/log/warn log does not need rotating considering log /var/log/messages log does not need rotating considering log /var/log/allmessages log /var/log/allmessages does not exist -- skipping considering log /var/log/localmessages log does not need rotating considering log /var/log/firewall log does not need rotating not running shared postrotate script, since no logs were rotated Can anyone suggest a reason why? thanks

How is it I get Qt from SUSE under a commercial licence?

Open Qt Designer 4.10, open Help > About Qt Designer. It says: "This program is licenced to you under the terms of the Qt Commercial Licence agreement." Something is obviously wrong here. SUSE must have bought a commercial licence, and they must have by mistake compiled their version of Qt to produce the RPMs, whereas they should have compiled the open source version. In case you are wondering where I got such a Qt Designer package from, nowhere but ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_10.0/develo… Dear SUSE developers, does something need fixing? -- Penguin #395953 resides at http://samvit.org subsisting on SUSE Linux 10.0 with KDE 3.5

How to get rid of DVD?

I'm kind of frustrated. I often need to install something and don't have the DVD (10.0) handy. I have added pretty much every installation source I can find, yet the DVD is still being asked for. How can I get rid of SUSE asking for it? Here are my sources: 1. Guru 2. Packman 3. SUSE: /i386/10.0/SUSE-Linux10.0-GM-Extra 4. SUSE: i386/current/inst-source-extra 5. dvd dev/hdc 6. /home/kai/downloads I've looked for other directories with yast-source in them, but I can't find any. what am I missing? Automount/Kaffeine complaints (rant)

Hello SuSE people, Running 10.0 and KDE 3.5 on an AMD 64. I am not sure if it is an automount problem or what. I put a movie DVD into the dvdplayer and wait a second or two. Then the automounter asks me what I want to do. I select "open with Kaffeine" Then I get the following message; "This version of Xine (used by Kaffeine) has only a reduced set of supported codecs. It is not able to play DVDs. Read http://support.novell.com/cgi-bin/search/searchtid.cgi?/en/2003/09/xine_dvd… for further details. Now keep in mind that this is supposedly the "uncrippled " version from Packman. Then I go to that Novell URL and it is not found, changed, or whatever. Zero results. So, we are back to square one. I have installed every known set of supporting libraries/codecs known to man at this time. Cannot get this to open like it was "designed/ should"??? OK, try another route. Now, I can navigate myself to /media/dvdrecorder and the .vob files, click on them, and Kaffeine opens and plays the movie perfectly. Why does it complain that it can't open the file when If you directly go to the file it works? Can anybody shed any light on this? I am really beginning to dislike this automount stuff and am thinking of disabling all of it. (Have trouble with audio CDs opening properly also.) But that is another story and a step backwards, isn't it? Please excuse this rant but by now I would think that all of these things should be sorted out. I have run SuSE since 7.0 and I keep hoping that every (bought and paid) upgrade will finally be the one where everything works. Wrong! Will SuSE 11.2 be the one? I guess we will see. Just frustrated, sorry, Can anybody help? Bob S.

As you're using X anyway, and being newbie, you might like this solution better than grinding the "legacy" editors: Use kate (Launcher/System/Editor). Or, if you need to do the editing as root (for config files), you can Alt+F2 "kdesu kate". This will give you a kate running as root while you are logged on as yourself. Also, try krusader (it's included) instead of midnight commander.

grub error 18

Hi everyone I have an annoying error with 10.0. On boot up I get grub error 18 and the system stops. I then hit ctrl+alt+del and the system reboots and works fine. Any ideas? Cheers, Steve.
