9.3 vs. 10: where's all the design work?

This is non-technical - where did all the design effort go SuSe used to spend in 9.*? I loved SuSe 9.* for the green theme - from Grub over the frame buffer to KDM and desktop themes, all backgrounds with beautiful and soothing colors. I couldn't believe my eyes and wanted to cry when I installed the SuSe 10 Eval DVD. Plain Redmond WinXP couldn't be more ugly than that. So is this just a penny saving exercise at Novell, or what? And is there a howto anywhere to recover this setup from 9.3? Thanks for your patience! Martin

Thanks for the advice, Do have 7.1 installed but was thinking about reinstalling from Packman. What makes me think it is not a kaffeine problem is that I can navigate to the .vob an it will open and play fine. Just the autostart part that gives me that message about codecs. Think I'll give it a try though and see what happens Mike, yes I do have the w32codecs-all installed. Thanks for the thought though. One never knows. Bob S.

Freshclam damon - logging

Hi all, I've got clamav running with amavis, all seems fine now for the most part. Except that when when running freshclam in daemon mode, and when I enable the "UpdateLogFile" in freshclam.conf, on start I get an error "Can't open /var/log/freshclam.log in append mode (check permissions!)". If I change the owner and group to /var/log/freshclam.log to "vscan", all works and logging is successful. However I did not need to do this for the clamav log, own/grp are "root" for that log file. Is it safe to set the perms in freshclam.log to "vscan", or do I need to do something else? Many thanks, Jim

Printing with cups doesn't work

Hy all, I am printing through cups to a postscript printer connected via ethernet. If I try to print for example a simple textfile, the job doesn't print. I have setup another System with OpenSuSE 10 and there the exact same setup does work as expected. I have duplicated the whole /etc/cups from System A to B. CulCullin contacted us (thanks at this point) and brought the discussion on the mailing list to our attention. Our forum has been around for approximately five years, and within the last few months we created a (fairly lively) openSuSE subforum. Would you all consider pointing the openSuSE community to our subforum in lieu of creating a brand new forum? By virtue of the fact that we've been around awhile, we already have a large member base and a number of knowledgable users who are happy to help newbies with various problems. And even though our forum covers more than just openSuSE, the problems of openSuSE users often intersect with those of SuSE users (so the added benefit would be that they could learn from problems/solutions outside the scope of just openSuSE). fstab entry

I have windows on the first hard drive and suse 10.0 on a second hard drive. I went to mount /dev/hda1, which is windows to get some files from it but it said that it couldn't find a fstab entry for the drive. I know that I can boot into this drive. what would be the correct entry that I would have to add to fstab? TIA Walt

SuSEconfig.desktop-file-utils error

Just noticed an error whilst running SuSEconfig hydrogen:/home/dave # /sbin/conf.d/SuSEconfig.desktop-file-utils ** (process:9024): CRITICAL **: egg_desktop_entries_add_group: assertion `egg_desktop_entries_lookup_group (entries, group_name) == NULL' failed And I have no idea what it means. Can anyone point me to the meaning please. I'm using OSS 10 Thanks Dave

Help, problem with port 110

Hi, This morning I got up and I saw a ton of errors with pop in my mail log. I need to know the flags for tcpdump so I see what beeing sent over port 110. This is the error I am seeing. Jan 29 08:28:22 magi popper[21154]: (null) at 12-215-86-194.client.mchsi.com (12.215.86.194): -ERR POP EOF or I/O Error [popper.c:820] This only started today, I turn off qpopper for the time.
