It all checked out, so I reinstalled 9.2 and ran it for a few days and rechecked to rule out temperature effects. I have some new clues: from dmesg: "JBD: barrier-based sync failed on hdc3 - disabling barriers" Note: The affected partition is EXT3. If I 'sync' manually when a process 'hangs' with the hard drive activity indicator stuck 'on', all seems to be OK. So how do I fix this error? Thanks - Carl --

Hi, where I can find info on how to capture video from DV cam, then edit it and then encode it to fit on CD or DVD? It could be free soft or commercial soft if price is normal ;-) Audrius

Leave fetchmail in place. Add a POP or an IMAP server to the same machine. That will allow you to access your mail. I've used Cyrus in the past, but it can get tricky. fixing boot sector and boot loader

Hello list, I am running a dual boot machine, suse 9.2 and w2k. My w2k install has died on me again (or it just feels abandoned). So I need to reinstall it. But this will kill the bootsector on c: (as I have to reformat c: too) which I guess will stop my suse install from working. My question is, is it relatively painless to just fix the suse boot loader once my machine is tainted with w2k again (I got the 9.2 DVD)? I thought I´d ask first before I am on my own. As my knowledge of linux is quite limited. Mikael

removal of update rpms from YaST directory

I have been in the habit of *not* checking the box that says "remove source packages after update" when I do a YOU update. Now I would like to delete all those rpms. I see that there are many files under /var/lib/YaST2/you/mnt/i386/update/9.3. Here is the info: /var/lib/YaST2/you/mnt/i386/update/9.3> du -khs * 21M deltas 1.7M patches 243M rpm 8.0K scripts I see rpm files under the patches and rpm directories. Which files from those directories can be deleted without confusing YOU?

Yast and zlib

Hi, I'm having trouble installing the security update to zlib via YOU. It downloads fine but as soon as it tries to install, it produces the error ERROR(InstTarget:E_RpmDB_subprocess_failed) I'm using 9.3 on a ASUS laptop. I've tried various download sites in case it was a corrupt file but they all give the same result. I've also tried a rpm --rebuildDB but its still the same. I only have 2 "alien" packages on my system Openoffice build 118 and opera (which i think installed via YaST) Does anyone have any clues where i can find a solution? thanks Ian

Hello, Okay, got everything back in place. Can anyone direct me to where I can find/create a linux.mc or sendmail.mc for Suse 9.3? I have been using Mandrake sendmail for several years with very little initial setup involved. For this mailer, it will only need to scan incoming mail, using MailScanner & SpamAssassin, and then forward mail to another mail server. Is there a quick sendmail howto I could use? System Freeze

I am running suse 9.2, KDE 3.4.2 and kernel 2.6.8-24, and have been having an annoying problem that seems to be getting worse. Whenever I play either a mp3 or listen to streaming music from the net, the system will freeze completely--not even able to switch to terminal & I end up having to reboot. Now it is happening if I play mpegs as well. No luck with Google and not sure how to proceed in debugging this issue. I am beginning to wonder if it is a hardware problem or IRQ issue, because a while ago I gave 9.3 a try, and it would still freeze when playing mp3 or streaming music. Pretty clueless. Any advice or pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Chip

Any users out there who may be able to help me with this? Anyone know where the libraries are and what they are called? # rpm -Uivh scribus-1.3.0-1hjh.i586.rpm error: Failed dependencies: libaudio.so.2 is needed by scribus-1.3.0-1hjh libstdc++.so.6 is needed by scribus-1.3.0-1hjh libstdc++.so.6(GLIBCXX_3.4) is needed by scribus-1.3.0-1hjh I've tried the scribus list and linking /usr/lib /libaudiofile.so.0.0.2 to libaudio.so.2 but to no avail. I've tried compiling from source too but there are so many issues I gave up. Does anyone have a 9.3 suse rpm for 1.3.0? Cheers, Steve.

server access problem

This morning, I tried to online update (i.e., get the latest modules) from a 9.3 system connected to sbcglobal.net. Neither apt nor YOU would work. Apt said something about an invalid command (I gathered this error was told by the server). I can understand that when an attempt was made to dialogue with the _specific_ URL I had put in apt's 'sources.list', something could go wrong. But I consider the behavior of YOU to be a bug !! YOU did NOT succeed at "getting a list of mirror servers". Instead of allowing me to choose from the list it had last used, the __only__ entry YOU showed on the 'Installation source' drop-down menu was an entry to repeat the attempt to fetch the list of mirrors. And each such attempt didn't succeed. Let me suggest that being subject to a "single point of failure" (e.g., if the list of mirrors can not be refreshed) is not a good design for SuSE's YOU function. mikus p.s. I *was* able to access U.S. sites with Konqueror, so it was not a TCP/IP problem on my system.
