how long should I wait for SUSE 9.3 FTP ISO?

Mail routing suggestion?

Hello list. I am looking for a suggestion on setting up an email system on a LAN. I am not really asking "How do I do this?", but rather, which software solutions should I use. I have never met too much in Linux that I can't figure out if I know where to look. What I have now .... SuSE 9.1 Pro, static IP, on WAN, Firewalled, SMTP port open, Postfix set to accept mail and route to one of 20 users on THAT machine. Postfix is configured to accept mail for 3 domains. All email for someuser@thisdomain or someuser(a)thismachine.thisdomain will be sent to someuser on this SuSE system. What I want to put into place .... The ability to route mail to anothermachine. So mail to someuser@thisdomain or someuser(a)thismachine.thisdomain would still got to someuser on the SuSE box, but mail to someotheruser(a)anothermachine.thisdomain would be set up to be delivered to mail software on anothermachine and mail from another machine would be sent out via routing through the SuSE system. I also want the ability to forward mail from someuser@thisdomain or someuser(a)thismachine.thisdomain to someotheruser(a)anothermachine.thisdomain and have it delivered to mail software on anothermachine. I have heard of fetchmail, pop mail, but I know nothing about any of this. I figured out postfix on the fly to get this far. All suggestions as to what software to use would be appreciated. Besides setting up the new software what changes do I need to make to my postfix main.conf file? Any HOWTO tips would also be appreciated. If there is a better list to direct these questions to please tell me. For completeness the other machine I am routing mail to is a Macintosh OS X system (10.4.1) All comments welcome. john

Moving Grub from MBR

I am installing FREE CompuSec (Posted in Suse Security: New Security Offering for Linux). It has a log-on with password before the loading of any OS. Unfortunately it has a known limitation when the boot loader (Grub), is stored in the MBR. This is because CompuSec places it's password program there. Apparently my machine will fail to boot if I finish the installation, unless I move Grub to the boot sector. Here is what the usage document says: If a boot manager is installed in the MBR, please take care of the following: The CompuSec loader is using some sectors behind the MBR of the hard disk. These are the sectors up to number 7. If a boot manager inside MBR also is using one of these sectors behind the first sector (e.g. GRUB with Stage 1.5), then the boot process will fail after installation of the CompuSec loader. In that cases it's recommended to install the boot manager in the boot sector of a partition instead of the MBR. When I go into YAST > System > Boot Loader Configuration, I see this line: Boot Loader Location 1. IDE, 37.27 GB, /dev/hda, WDC-WD400BB-22FJAO (MBR) I am assuming that this shows Grub occupying the MBR. Is it a big process to move Grub from MBR to the boot sector? I dual boot XP and Suse Pro 9.2. This is my work PC, and I can't have it down except to reboot. If it is a painful move, I will try it at home sometime first. Any comments or experiences welcome. And to anyone thinking about trying this FREE CompuSec, you end up having to reboot, at least once. Thanks. James W

Do you think Windows will boot (as it prefers to be on the first partition). I am wondering if I should shrink Windows a tad, and make a small first partition for the boot loader. How to remove panel message on Gnome Startup SuSe 9.3?

hello from Adam I have been running SuSE 9.3 from 9.2 and usually run Gnome with Metacity. When the panels come up, I keep getting "I've have detected a panel already running, and will not exit" box with a don't enter icon. What do I do to not have this message come up every bootup to Gnome? Thanks in advance. Adam

I was told by another student just today that there exist a sort of graphic tool that make life much easier at using LaTeX to prepare long documenrts ... Trying to install Captive-NTFS and LUFS on Suse Linux 9.3

Folks, I'm trying to install Captive-NTFS to allow me to have a writable NTFS file system. I'm having a great deal of difficulty in doing this. Captive-ntfs is installed but it's complaining that LUFS isn't running. When I try running prepmod I get the following errors: /usr/include/asm/hw_irq.h:28: error: `NR_IRQ_VECTORS' undeclared here (not in a function) /usr/include/asm/hw_irq.h:32: error: `NR_IRQS' undeclared here (not in a function) Failed to prepare lufs.ko module for your Linux kernel 2.6.11.4-20a-default. Detected Linux kernel sources "/lib/modules/2.6.11.4-20a-default/build" do not appear to be valid. It seems to want an rpm called kernel-headers-2.6.<xx>, but I can't find that anywhere, I've looked at ftp.suse.com with no luck. I even tried downloading the lufs source and compiling it but the autoconf configuration file complains about no kernel headers. Anyone know where these kernel headers are? i'm running Suse 9.3 professional edition on an AMD 64 Athlon. Thanks, Braun Brelin

screen blocks installation of 9.1

Hi folks, After more than six months of messing around I finally got SuSE 9.1 running. Then, silly me, I went out a bought a laptop: It is an AMD 64 bit processor supplied by a company called TPG, but I believe that it is actually an Arima W70-K8M in disguise. I tried to install SuSE 9.1 for 64 bit machines but ran into the following problem. SuSE appears to install with no problems, but when it goes to re-start it hangs thus: First start: I press F2 to see details: hangs after saying it is going to start something (which I have forgotten). Second start attempt: Gets past the above point, but hangs after announcing that it is starting CUPS. Third start attempt: Gets to the login screen and announces that it cannot read the monitor type and would I like to configure it manually. After configuring SuSE hangs the machine. Must power off. The above is exactly repeatable every time, several times. The screen is a WXGA LCD with LVDS interface. The native resolution is 1280 x 800 "wide" screen. The card is a SiS 651_66FX_ _741_760_760GX_M661FX_M661MX Works with zero problems under 'that' XP at 60 Hz, 32 bit color. I have tried: (a) installation without up-dates, (b) installation with up-dates (about three hours with ADSL), (c) setting the screen as LCD with under-sized pixel dimensions, (d) setting VGA (screen drops into violent color flashes), etc I have spent over twenty hours surfing the web for a solution. TPG do not provide technical support except to say that there is a discussion on the Whirlpool forum (but I read the whole lot, about 90 large pages, and found NULL). 9.3 panel boloon boxes too big

While we are on this 'too big issue', home do I make the huge "balloon help' boxes on the panel small or non-existant? These are th ones that pop up when the mouse goes oven an icon. -- John R.
