Hi, after all I installed successfully 9.3 on this machine. Now the problem I have is, that during the install both the touchpad and the stick (the nice thing between the keys on the keyboard) were working, and I was able to use both to move the mouse pointer. But then, after the install, on the first login, the plugger discovered the "right" type of the device - ALPS DualPoint TouchPad - asked for root password to configure it. And after this "configuration" the stick works no more, as well as its buttons. The touchpad itself and its buttons are OK. As I prefer to use the stick, does anyone know a solution for this problem? I have found a similar post on the suse forums for 9.2, but no solution. Cheers Sunny

Kdm autologin user information; autologin fails

Hi, I'm using kdm and mwm as windowmanager. Now, when I configure a user for autologin by adding the correct settings for kdmrc I've got 2 problems: - going from non-autologin to autologin it is not enough to send a SIGHUP to kdm. I've got to restart kdm to get this working. - going from autologin user1 to user2 gives a error message 'authentication fails'. After a normal login procedure with user2 and a restart of kdm it works. So my question: does anyone knows how to fix this? Where does the displaymanager (I think this is a general thingy and not kdm specific) stores it's user authentication data? Regards Harry

Suspend to Disk and usb mouse

Hi, I have Toshiba A75 and SuSE 9.3 installed. I use default kernel (instead of smp) that works properly with acpi and powersave daemon. "Suspend to Disk" works quite ok. However the only problem I face is that my USB mouse does not work (message: "lost synchronization"). I have tried with reloading some kernel modules with no success. Any ideas? gimp wideangle plugin crashes on amd64

I just installed a gimp plugin called wideangle on my Suse 9.3, Athlon64 system but it crashes with a segmentation violation. I'm wondering if anybody has seen similar syptoms? I'm an occasional gimp user but have never tried installing plugins before. When I ran gimp and selected the plugin, I saw the segv message in my terminal. gimp itself kept running. Has anybody successfully installed this plugin on an amd64 system? Configuring swat

This is not that big a deal since I seem to have Samba configured satisfactorily but I just want to know. I am supposed to be able to access swat by entering http://localhost:901 in my browser but I am unable to access it. I do have local networking active as I can browse other devices on my network. My wife can get to my printer on my Linux system from her XP system so Samba works. I have the appropriate line in /etc/services BUT traditionally you need a line in /etc/inetd.conf. We have /etc/xinetd.conf but it really just seems to refer one to the directory xinetd.d. In the Administration Guide on page 543 it refers you to /etc/xinetd.d/samba and instricts you to edit it. There is no such file. There IS /etc/xinetd.d/swat but it does not seem to require any change as far as I can see. SO, any thoughts? Scott

Boosting performance

I'm running SuSE 9.2 on a Proliant DL380, was working fine, only had problems copy and entire tree from one FS to another (it seems to hang). The backup to tape was during 3 hours. The changes made (/boot/grub/menu.lst): * Deleted the "desktop" kernel parameter * Changed the "elevator" kernel parameter from "as" to "cfq" Now, the backups takes 1h 40 min to finish, any comments? Digital camera and hotplugging

When plugging in an Olympus C-460 Zoom camera, two instances of Konqueror appear. One points to the URL media:/camera with one item - Olympus C-2040Z and the other to /media/usbdisk. If I use the /media/usbdisk, then I can enter the folders and view my pictures and all is well. However, if I click on the first instance, it takes me to camera://Olympus C-2040Z@[usb:]/ and a message dialog box saying "Could not read file Unspecified error." I have to reboot the computer then in order to see the pictures in /media/usbdisk. Looking at the logs in /var/log/messages, the following appears when I go to camera://Olympus C-2040Z@[usb:]/ Jul 3 17:14:09 jaguar kernel: usb 1-1: usbfs: interface 0 claimed while 'kio_kamera' sets config #1 Jul 3 17:14:09 jaguar hal-subfs-mount[8972]: Mount point /media/usbdisk got removed. The SUSE manual suggests looking at http://www.gphoto.org/proj/libgphoto2/support.php to see if the camera is supported. It is not listed here. Some questions: 1) Is there a way to configure it so that it is supported? 2) What does the camera:/ URL do? I can't google for this term as Google ignores the colon in the search :( 3) How do I get rid of the 1st instance of Konqueror from appearing when I plug in the camera so that the media:/camera URL does not appear? It umounts the usb disk when used so I'd rather it was not around as this is all for my grandmother. When I plug the camera into a computer for the first time, I get a message box titled "SUSE hardware detection" with message: A new camera was detected Open with: kfmclient openURL camera:/ ? x Do not ask again Yes No I selected yes on the one system and left the 'Do not ask again' option selected. Where is this option stored? I'd like it to ask me again so that I can choose no! The SUSE Administration Guide indicates that programs are run on an event such as the camera being plugged in, but I can't see anything in any of the /etc/hotplug.d scripts that run either kfmclient or konqueror. Trouble installing SUSE 9.3

Someone on the net says that the SUSE 9.3 bootfloppies just don't work at all. He found the work around of using the suse 9.1 bootfloppies instead. So, I am now downloading the SUSE 9.1 cd iso so I can run mkbootdisk with it . . . This feels wrong, but I am running out of things to try. Has anyone used the boot floppies to install 9.3 or have all of you just booted from the cdrom? I'll let you know how it works out. Rafe

The floppy starts to boot and gives me a screen with a bunch of choices: harddisk, linux, noacpi, failsafe,rescue, and memtest. The memtest works fine every thing else fails with the same error mesg: Boot failed: please change disk and press a key to contine. After making a choice form the list above the floppy light is lit for several seconds before the error message comes up. It almost boots before failing. I think the idea is that the first disk boots a small linux kernel and one of the other 7 boot disks has the right usb drivers for my cdrom. Once the first disk boots it tries different disks until it can find the cdrom drive -- I am just guessing, but I think that is how it should work. Rafe

I did not know about the floppy= parameters - thanks for pointing it out. I still get the error: "Boot failed: please change disks and press a key to continue." Pressing a key does nothing. I goggled the floppy= parameter and tried ALL the possible settings -same error every time. I even tried floppy=debug and got nothing new. I tried all the above with and without quotes "". I am going to buy a second new box of floppies. The Office Depot near me only sells their brand and I may need better floppies. Has anyone else had to switch floppy brands to get this to work? The floppies pass verify on my linux box, but that does not mean they are prefect. I seem to remember that the device drivers for floppies sometimes will try to read several times before giving up and maybe on the setup disk every thing has to work the first time.
