Hi, i need a way to know what IPs are active on my LAN. Ive been told to ping the broadcast address, but its not working. Any Idea? BTW i have my wireless adapter, up and running (with encryption) but still have problems with my HP DeskJet 3770. Ive followed the unofficial drivers "FAQ" with no good result (compiled sane, used iousb, ....). If a kind soul could help me with detailed info it would be great. Thanks in Advance.

ethereal Capture Problem

OS: SuSE 9.3 Pro In attempting to run tethereal capturing traffic on two different systems using this command: tethereal -a filesize:30000 -b 100:120 -i eth0 -q -w /var/log/eth0.log One system is running ethereal v0.10.9-4 and it works as it has since 9.1, namely capturing up to 30MB of data or captures for up to 2 minutes rotating capture files up to a maximum of 100 files before overwriting the first one. Files are named eth0_00001_<date_time>, eth0_00002_<date_time>, etc. However on the system running the latest v 0.10.11-2.1, the same capture command does not increment the file sequence number which will eventually exhaust all diskspace. Files are named eth0_00001_<date_time>, eth0_00001_<date_time>, etc. Did they introduce a bug into [t]ethereal? Thank you, Lucky Leavell

Sound server fatal error:

CPU overload, aborting. That is something I regularly see on my fresh installed 9.3 What is aborted is not clear because sound is still there for notifications and so. I googled and found that it is a longstanding problem with for me no practical solutions. I have patched with YOU and are up to date. I am using KDE on my Pentium II with 256 Mb memory. With 9.0, 9.1 and 9.2 I had a more or less smooth running system with at least no sound problems. I have a Creative Sound Blaster AudioPCI 128 running. I am still using Kmix but after reading through the problem solving I tend to delete this volume control. Only point, it is part of a complete package. I have looked at AlsaMixer but must admit that I do not understand how to open lines, what this padlocks do etc. It has still not a nice and simple Gui. From the literature about the fatal sound errors it looks as it was expected that the problem in the 2.6 kernel would be past. For me it just started there. Could somebody give me some hints how to solve my problem?

Serial port sniffer

Hi, I'm writing an application that uses a serial port. I am using some kind of driver, but I'm not getting the expected results. So I would like to see what is written to and comming from the serial port. Since I use Ethereal to transparently snif the network, so I wonder if there exists something like it for the serial port. I googled and the only thing I thought usable was 'cat /dev/ttySx > data.dat &' but when I tried this the filesize was only one byte although there were sent and received many more. How big of Swap file do you need?

I have a LSI Raid card with three 160 gb drives doing raid 5. The default swap is 1 gb do I need to up this default setting? What is the swap file used for? thanks bob

SuSE 9.2 aDSL modem/router problems

I have problems connecting my SuSE box to Internet: a) If I use "bridge work mode" on router and set up aDSL connection with YaST (or rp-pppoe) I am able to connect to Internet. b) If I want to use PPPoE on router (and enter my username and password on router, or use options provided by device) configuring PC as plain DHCP client, with Ethernet only connection and without DSL configuration, I am not able to connect to Internet. I get following error: ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Jun 9 10:22:54> pppd 2.4.1 started by root, uid 0 Jun 9 10:24:34> System Call Error Jun 9 10:24:34> Couldn't get channel number: Transport endpoint is not connected Jun 9 10:24:34> Doing disconnect ------------------------------------------------------------------------ At this moment I am able to ping router from PC, ping PC from router, but nothing goes through routers WAN slot... PC has IP (192.168.1.2) provided from DHCP server on router, router IP (192.168.1.1) is gateway address for PC... DSL status is OK Ethernet status OK Connection status - not connected... I contacted my ISP and they told me that they support PPPoE, VPI and VCI values were default one (8 and 35)... Can someone help me with this one... What does PC client send to ISP and router device doesnt. Device is D-Link DSL-502T Thank you, Greetings.

Cheap UK-available SATA card recommendations?

Thanks to Jack and Ken - Jack recommends using 3ware SATA cards, but here in the UK the only ones I seem to be able to find are hundreds of pounds. Anyone recommend a cheap SATA card available in the UK that will give reasonable performance and allow me to attach SATA disks reliably to SuSE 9.2 / 9.3 installations? New Linux Online Magazine - Tux

There's a relatively new magazine (PDF Format) online entilted 'Tux' that is billing itself as 'The First And Only Magazine for the New Linux User' that you can find at http://www.tuxmagazine.com Although it's main function is an attempt to aid in the transition from Windows to Linux, it also offers interesting articles/editorials for the average Linux user. But, mainly, folks coming over from Windows to Suse Linux may receive a lot of insight reading it. It is distribution neutral (although they do review distro's) but with a KDE leaning bent. So far in the 3 issues released it has averaged approx 48 - 50 pages per issue of colorful, image laden content. The folks who maintain and/or publish Linux Journal (http://www.linuxjournal.com), Linux Gazette (http://www.linuxgazette.com) and Doc's IT Garage (http://www.docsearls.com) (SSC Publishing - Phil Huges) are responsible for this offering. This months issue (issue 3) tackles K3b, Tux Paint for Kids, IPod and Linux and a few other bits of news/reviews including a look at MEPIS 3.3. Hope someone finds this useful!
