SuSE 9.2 aDSL modem/router problems
I have problems connecting my SuSE box to Internet: a) If I use "bridge work mode" on router and set up aDSL connection with YaST (or rp-pppoe) I am able to connect to Internet. b) If I want to use PPPoE on router (and enter my username and password on router, or use options provided by device) configuring PC as plain DHCP client, with Ethernet only connection and without DSL configuration, I am not able to connect to Internet. I get following error: ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Jun 9 10:22:54> pppd 2.4.1 started by root, uid 0 Jun 9 10:24:34> System Call Error Jun 9 10:24:34> Couldn't get channel number: Transport endpoint is not connected Jun 9 10:24:34> Doing disconnect ------------------------------------------------------------------------ At this moment I am able to ping router from PC, ping PC from router, but nothing goes through routers WAN slot... PC has IP (192.168.1.2) provided from DHCP server on router, router IP (192.168.1.1) is gateway address for PC... DSL status is OK Ethernet status OK Connection status - not connected... I contacted my ISP and they told me that they support PPPoE, VPI and VCI values were default one (8 and 35)... Can someone help me with this one... What does PC client send to ISP and router device doesnt. Device is D-Link DSL-502T Thank you, Greetings.

I don't think there's anything wrong with suse, just try to play around with your router. IMHO, the router mode is always better, because all you have to do is type in the gateway address, and that works on every OS. The router should definitely say connected, and then everything should work. I had the same problem with my router (it's a siemens router). If set up properly, it should connect through your ISP and then your net connection should work from linux.

Sounds like a routing problem.

It looks here like you are still trying to run PPP from the linux box... Nope, don't do that. Once you turn pppoe over to the router, the linux box really doesn't need to run anything special other than to realize that the ip address of the router (192.168.1.1 I think in your case) is the gateway.

Sounds good

Where are these messages from? Need a better description of the actions you took when you put the router in place. What did you change on the linux box?

I did configure NIC with YaST to get IP from DHCP server on router (PC IP = 192.168.1.2) and to use router as gateway (router IP = 192.168.1.1)

These messages are from router/modem device. There is web based configuration application available on device...

I tried to configure it as described in manual: Linux & Win iteration 1 :) -------------------------------------------- -set up PC as DHCP client (auto IP) -connect to router through browser -choose *PPPoE mode*, enter username and password, save all, restart... -tried to connect - no way iteration 2: -------------------------------------------- -choose *bridge mode*, save all, restart -set up PC as DHCP client (auto IP) -on Linux used Yast to configure DSL, enter uname and password - Connect OK -tried rp-pppoe works also... -on windows created new connection - Connect OK

Well, if the router can't login to the ISP, then that is the main problem. :-) Couple things come to mind. You possibly need a 'cross-over' cable between the router and the DSL modem. That should be spelled out in the router documenation somewhere. You might also try reseting the ADSL modem before trying the router connection. Reason: I have a wireless rcvr here to my ISP and if I do the same thing you are doing (switching between router and rp-ppoe) I have to power-off the recvr to get it to connect.... a fresh start. Otherwise it apparently thinks is it still connected to the last device used and won't to a new login.

No cable between router and modem - this *one* is ADSL modem+router :)

I will try with device off-on. Thank you
