I come to Suse because of Novell's transition. I believe it is the right decision but I have a long learning curve ahead of me. I used Unix in college and that has been 10 yr ago. So, My question... We are running make that installing...Novell OES Sles. The default partitioning is rieser. May be confused but I thought Novell was supporting NSS under Suse? (NSS is what we used on Netware 6.5) Is rieser the default because it is the best all around for Linux. thanks in advance... I have to start somewhere, bob

firefox java plugin only works as root

Hi in: /opt/MozillaFirefox/lib/plugins I have a link to the libjavaplugin_oji.so from: /usr/lib/jvm/jre/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32 It works fine as root but as a user, firefox gives the message that I have to download the java plugin. 9.3 Any ideas? Cheers, Steve.

Midnight Commander doesn't keep 'cd'-s...

Hi, I would badly need the feature also as user to get 'mc' to follow moving between directories. At present with the 100% same settings exclusively root can have all the following: 1. run mc, 2. navigating through directories, 3. after exit mc, still staying in the folder, where we went in at last... The user of course can run mc, navigate through folders, but gets back (after exiting mc) _always_ to the same folder, where mc was started up. So seemingly all of the navigation-job gets forgotten. Any ideas please? As I told everything happens also with completely same mc settings, so probably there is something else taken into consideration I don't know about... (My system is a fully patched SUSE 9.1.) Thanks, Pelibali

How to set sound device used by Firefox?

I'm using SuSE9.3, and have 2 sound cards setup... /dev/dsp is the default card (Soundblaster 7.1) and /dev/dsp1 is the secondary card (onboard AC'97). Both sound cards are setup properlky and work fine. The secondary card is dedicated to my Skype headset. The primary card is set to be used by all other applications. This setup is working fine... except for one application... Firefox. When I am on any webpage that has sound, it is always played through /dev/dsp1 - the headset, not the main speakers. So... that's the problem.... anyone know how to fix this so that Firefox uses the primary sound card (/dev/dsp) instead of the secondary sound card (/dev/dsp1)? C.

reverse "id" command

Hi list, this is an odd problem, yet simple.. I could not find a command line tool that would return me the user name belonging to a UID (number) independent from the underlieing auth mechanism. It should be kind of a reverse "id" command.. the way an "ls" uses it. It seems so trivial to me, but I didn't find an answer googling for it. Any ideas? Markus

Palm not recognised by Kpilot

Hi! At this moment I am using Kpilot to syncronise my Palm Tungsten T3 with my laptop. At the end of this month I will clean up the laptop (reformat), so I am moving all email and calandar stuff to my desktop PC. I have one problem with Kpilot on the deskop PC: it doesn't find the palm on USB. I tried to find my Palm with the utility to monitor the USB devices and thats OK: the Palm handheld is connected with 'UHCI Host Controler (1)'... but Kpilot don't find it... Anyone can help? Hi all, I'm currently testing out Suse 9.2 for possible use as a workstation OS of choice. The problem: e1000 driver is not negotiating to gigabit. Inspection: I first noticed slow performance on NFS, FTP, SCP and TFTP, before looking through the dmesg output (I've honestly never had a gigE card not negotiate to gig speeds, so it was the last thing I thought of ..) related dmesg output. e1000: Ignoring new-style parameters in presence of obsolete ones e1000: eth0: e1000_probe: Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network Connection e1000: eth0: e1000_watchdog: NIC Link is Up 100 Mbps Full Duplex Upon further reading I noticed that it is not possible to force gig conns on the OS side, and reading through the docs for our switch reveals that it cannot be forced there either. Things I've tried thus far: 1. Workstation has onboard e100 card, disabled it and reinstalled 2. Installing new e1000 rpm (installed fine, still not running gig speeds though). Seemed to make no difference the original version is still loaded as noted in the /var/log/messages output. Besides this I've noticed the Suse 9.2 doesn't use the usual /etc/modules.conf for module aliases and options .. where are these stored? I know I can get them through YAST but the 'ignoring new-style params...', makes me think there's something wrong with a config file somewhere. Also if I let the Suse 9.2 install detect the network card, is it loaded as a module or is it in the kernel? I assumed it was loaded as a module and let the install detect and start it. Perhaps its in the kernel though, my next line of though will be to recompile the kernel or reinstall the OS and skip the network card detection step. I've included the dmesg output as an attachment in case someone cares to peruse it.
