Keyboard bindings

I bought a cheapo keyboard the other day that has a few 'multimedia' keys such as volume up, volume down, mute and some other rubbish. In Windows, the media keys are actually pretty useful when in a game, or you're too lazy to play with the audio controls. Because of the speaker setup, I can't simply turn the knob on the speaker and make it quieter/louder. Now, in Linux, I'm wondering can you setup to something like that. I tried going to Kcontrol and setting up control to one of those special keys. He didn't register that anything was pressed. Someone told me that Arts is the cause of a lot of sound problems in Suse. What is it? Can it be disabled and yet have the OS produce sound?

Greetings, I have a huge problem, my new customer has nearly 500 sites that are all run via dial-up, The problem is that all the sites are running different versions of linux, I would like to standardise the whole network on suse 9.1 or 9.2. The problem is that we still have a sco server, The current setup is running via uucp, uucico and cu I migrated the scripts from the redhat boc to suse box and configured and install everything as it was on the other flavours, but when running cu it won't dial-up, could anyone point me to some sensible docs for uucp uucico an cu in suse 9.1? Root password corrupt?

Problem box- Standard install...not too much funky but all suse stuff. 9.0 - all patches Dell Precision 420 2XPIII's 867(?) 512 ram Onboard SCSI (On APC battery backup) This is the third time I can't log in as admin on this box. I figured the first time I forgot the password, the second time I made it simple (it's a internal file server for a few people) but this third time I wrote it down! During the installs, it asks me if I want to encrypt the passwords, I hit yes. Is that a mistake? I don't remember exactly what type of encryption it asks to use. I'm getting tired of doing reinstalls. I'm running 9.0 on this box. Has anyone else had this issue? Luckily the shares are on another drive...I don¹t even share the boot drive. Even sitting right in front of the box, my password doesn't work. (and yes, I checked caps lock) ;\ It isn't anyone messing with it. I'm basically the only one messing with it. The box runs fine...stock Dell...but it has to be corruption... *Would changing keyboards and mice all the time affect it? I don¹t keep them connect until I need to...most of the time it's up and running...and I may not use the same ones. Anything before I reinstall the OS??? Problems with lvm2 / devive mapper

named dns

Hi all, I set up named to be my caching dns, and changed my resolv.conf to 127.0.0.1 only but now if i "dig www.google.com" first time it takes 500ms second time 1ms, and if i wait 15min and try again it's 500ms again. Can anyone tell me what's the problem and why it doesnt cache the ip's for longer? Also shouldnt there be files in var/log since in named.conf there are two setting for logging. dump-file "/var/log/named_dump.db"; statistics-file "/var/log/named.stats"; Thanx

Firewall and port 5353 (mdnsd)

Since I have installed 9.3, my /var/log/firewall is loaded with hundreds of the following: May 29 03:25:40 avalon kernel: SFW2-INext-DROP-DEFLT IN=eth0 OUT= MAC= SRC=192.168.0.31 DST=224.0.0.251 LEN=107 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=255 ID=8 DF PROTO=UDP SPT=5353 DPT=5353 LEN=87 Looking up port 5353 I see that this is used by the Multicast DNS daemon (mdnsd). # ps -ef | grep mdnsd nobody 6833 1 0 May24 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/mdnsd -f /etc/rendezvous.conf -b Is there anything I should do about this? Seems like the system shouldn't be configured in a way that the firewall log is swamped with these messages but I am not sure if opening up port 5353 in the firewall is a good thing. Thanks.

After suffering for months with an ATI 9200 with Suse 9.2, based on recommendations, I went and got a GeForce 5200. There's no comparison! The GeForce cost $20 less, and is 100 times better! The driver ( once I understood how to install it ) performs flawlessly.
