(but yes, in > the past I could) Hm. So you haven't actually tried logging in normally with root, it's just with 'su'? When this happens, try logging in as root from the login prompt. If that works, I guess 'su' has lost its suid bit. If you do ls -l /bin/su do you get -rwsr-xr-x 1 root root 23296 2005-03-19 21:28 /bin/su (the relevant bit is the s in rws at the beginning) Do you perhaps set your security level up? The thing is, if /bin/su loses its suid bit, it will always tell you the password is wrong, because it simply can't check if it's right or not. A normal login from the login prompt should still work though, so you can log in and reset the suid bit with chmod u+s /bin/su if this really is the problem. And if it is, the question is why it happens. My money is on the security level. If it's set too high (paranoid), the suid bits will be stripped off everything If this isn't the problem, and you can't even log in from the login screen, then I'm at a loss. The first thing then would be to reset the root password the way others have described, and then investigate what has happened to the original root password.

Weird Video Problems

Hi Again, Just when I thought I had all my video problems fixed, another shows up. Some background. I have a compaq presario R3000 amd 64 laptop. I have successfully configured the nvidia drivers from SuSE and you for 1280x800. The weirdness occurs after screensaver (blank setting) wakes up. If the backlight of the screen is turned off by the screensaver then the video returns garbled. If I log out then back in again the video is proper. This behaviour has me completely stumped. Please, has anyone any ideas? Thanks in advance, Phil

Problem with swap space on Suse 9.1 installation

Hello, I’m trying to install Suse 9.1 on a very old machine (a Pentium 133Mhz w/ 48Mb of RAM and two Maxtor hard drives, one with 1.2Gb and another with 1.5Gb) Since my CD-ROM doesn’t seem to read recordable CDs, I’ve been trying a network installation (I’ve downloaded the installation directory into another PC on my LAN that’s acting as FTP server). I’ve created the three boot floppy disks and I’m booting my machine from floppy. I can configure my network card using the appropriate modules disk. When I first tried to install, it told me there was not enough memory and had to create some swap space. I then used the rescue disk to try to do something about it. I used fdisk and set up these partitions: /dev/hda1 – Linux /dev/hda2 – Linux Swap /dev/hdc1 – Linux Then I did a mkswap –c /dev/hda2 and the swapon /dev/hda2 The swap has 280Mbytes. I rebooted the machine and started the installation process. Once again it said I had to create swap space, and I went to a console terminal and did the swapon /dev/hda2 command – no errors. This seamed to have worked, because it started to download the installation image. It was all going well until it needed to use the swap space. I can see activity on the hard drive, but the download stops and the installation hangs. No error messages that I can see. Can anyone help me on this one? When I installed SuSE 9.3 hyperthreading was disable in the BIOS. If I enable it should I then install the SMP kernel?

Ni sound in realplayer

Tired watching the http://www.novell.com/linux/windowstolinux/publicservice clip Realplayer starts (Realplayers homepage states: version 7) but no sound.... If i start it from a shell it shows the sound volume set to zero. sheet music converter

This from a friend of mine who is going to insall SUSE on his 'puter. ALL the "bases" are covered but one.......sheet music. I've looked but haven't found anything......does anyone know of such an app.? SuSE 9.0 Mozilla 1.4 GMail POP download

Sorry I've been out of the SLE loop for a while. On a recent need for more POP email space above the 10-20Mb from my ISP, I decided to auto-forward all mail coming to the ISP account to my GMail account. I enabled POP on the GMail account and then figured I could download the mail in my GMail store to my local client machine via my dialup ISP. I have unfortunately not been able to receive a single mail from the GMail store. On Mozilla Mail I have created a secondary account and entered the POP server settings as per the GMail suggestions for setting up other email clients. I did not enter the GMail SMTP server details as I already have my ISP's SMTP server added and figured it shouldn't need it. On the GMail account though I am unsure about the 'Server settings' check boxes. I have them all checked except for 'Check mail at startup' and 'Empty trash on exit'. I also have 'Leave messages on server' unchecked. What happens when I dialup and connect to my ISP and request GMail POP download is that it contacts the server, requests my password, and then tells me how many messages are waiting but then does not download any of them. If I wait a few minutes and then request my GMail again, an error message is returned saying that the folder is being processed and that I should try later. I also tried setting up a GMail filter to auto-forward the email but the filters don't work on mail already received. :( How or where can I go to get the 600 emails that are waiting there to download? Yes, I did mean to yell in the Subject line. The problem, other than the failed drive, turned out to be a red faced forehead slapper. I forgot to change the jumper on the primary master after I removed the failed primary slave. Spread sheet

Hey Group; In my passed good life I used a datebase called filepro. Filepro was a very good simple to program UNIX based DB with creation and runtime modules. It had a function that allowed a person to test "while entering field". I would like to use this function on a MS/OO spread sheet. Example - If cell "G2" (formatted-DATE 05/29/05) set to =TODAY() then every time I call up the sheet it changes to todays date. Not desireable! I would like to make a test on cell G4 for "while entering field" G4 ; if G4 equal "" - make G2 equal to G4 ; if G4 is greater than "" do nothing (or stay with G4s value). Example - "=if(G4>"";G4;G2)" NOTE:I may have the result backwards Anyone know of a way to do "while entering field" with a spread sheet. I have tried "=if(G4>"";G4;G2)" and it fails. I'm a Novell shareholder and I knew that, before investing in Novell, that I might not make me rich right away. It just comforts me to know that the world is going towards Linux and eventually, it will pay off somehow, in increased productivity in developing and developed countries and maybe, eventually in currency.
