adjust disk cache

I just discovered a graphical display of memory under KDE. I noticed that about 49MB of my total 128MB of ram is being consumed by disk cache. This computer does not seem slow, but it does seem to have problems when I am running several programs at once, like Suse help and a konsole. Can this cache be adjusted? What is the effect/ Is there a test program so I can see the effect. I have 6 to 10% of my physical ram free, this is why I am addressing the issue. -- --- John Sowden American Sentry Systems. Can I install 9.3 from hard disk?

hey all Susers, I've downloaded the 9.3 iso image from suse ftp. should I really need to burn it on a DVD and start installation? is it possible to install from my hard disk? any ideas? thx in advance

Kat and libpoppler

Hi, I've been interested in Kat (<http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=22135>) ever since I learned of it, so I was pleased to see version 0.5.2 show up in the KDE supplementary update area of the mirror I use (<ftp://mirror.mcs.anl.gov/pub/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.3/yas…>). Unfortunately, that RPM cannot be installed because of two unsatisfied dependencies: libpoppler-qt.so.0 and libpoppler.so.0. (Poppler is a PDF rendering library, presumably used by Kat to examine the textual contents of PDF files it finds.) Does anyone know: a) Why they'd publish an RPM with unsatisfied dependencies and b) Where I can find these poppler library RPMs? Thanks. Randall Schulz

SuSE9.3 Pro

Hey Group; I noticed a new problem with Yast at the selection part of an install. That is that it wants a /media/floppy (default setting) to export or save the user.sel file on. Problem is there is not a /media directory so if fails. I went to an alternate tty# and did mkdir which fixed the problem, Yast then would either write to a FAT or ext2 floppy to the default fd0. It also had problems on the HD reboot trying to run fsck on my usb hard drive sda1. Fixed this by editing fstab and removing the mention of sda1. Under 9.2 it was listed under subfs and not as a common IDE type HD like 9.3. Finally, why is Mozilla missing the "Mail&Newgroup" function? I will say that so far is a pretty small list. Cron job to rescue system from freezes

Hello, I'm asking this question in the hopes that someone can help. Running SuSE 9.2 along with a Nvidia 5200 video card using nvidia module 1.0-6629 (the current module makes not difference to my problem). After a few days of uptime the system will freeze where the mouse and keyboard no longer work. The last time this happened I was running kdetv and netscape. Sound from the TV continued to work. I ran memtest over night (about 12 hours) and no errors were found so I do not think it is a memory problem. The next thing to check is the video card. Is there a way of checking out a video card to see if it is locking up the system? Does anyone know if there is a command which could be executed by a cron job to determine if the system (mouse/keyboard) is locked and then reset the system to level 3 (init 3) or somehow unlock the keyboard. GDK errors

After doing an online update on my 9.2 system, on one user only, I can not launch any browser or email program. Low Sound Volume

I just added a C-Media C8738-MC6 audio card. For a long time the sound volume was very, very low and I had to run my speaker volume way up to hear it. Then I started playing with audio settings. I opened up K-Mix...for each slider there are green lights at the top and red lights at the bottom. I have no idea what they mean but when I clicked on the red light at the bottom of the PCM slider, suddenly the volume turned up to a normal, clear level. However, if I use the slider on RealPlayer, the volume goes back down...until I click the red light again. It doesn't seem to matter if I click it on or off, it just makes the sound normal. Questions: 1) What are these green and red lights? 2) Is there some way or some other setting I can change to make the normal sound volume 'stick' ?
