SuSE 9.2 Update package contents...

I was going to order the SuSE 9.2 package (DVDs+CDs) and was referred to several online sites that sold them at a discounted rate from the full retail price via "Digital River". They appear to be the same package when there is a picture, but sometimes it says std upgrade (CD). I called one merchant to verify that it was the full upgrade product and they said it was not the full product, if I wanted the update, I only got 1 CD with the updated products on it. !?!? This was suppposedly after contacting their Novell distributor. Now I know there are sites that offer unofficial CD/DVD duplicates for cheap and know those aren't the official update products, but this distributor got their upgrade product from Novell and claimed it was a CD only. Have things gotten more complicated and Novell is offering subsets of the official upgrade package, or was this online reseller (one recommended on the SuSE/Novell site) misinformed? Where is the best place to order the full upgrade package these days? Do I still have to "bother" or can I wait until 9.3 (which is probably due any time now) -- or will it only upgrade the 1 package before it? At least Microsoft does that aspect right, with new OS upgrades, coming out years apart will still upgrade older OS versions rather than only the one just before it. Pie-in-the-sky -- it'd be great if the main distro's would agree on package names so packages could be inter-installed between distro's....but that would be just too much like 'right' for consumers...;-) -linda

I enable remote VNC in Yast and changed the firewall to allow VNC. I then rebooted the server just to be safe because it said I had to "rcxdm restart" from a console. I then tried to access the server using Firefox, which has Java enabled, by typing http://servername:5801 At that point i'm asked for a VNC password. Squirrelmail on SSL

Hi all, How do I get squirrelmail to work using SSL. I have it running imap, thru stunnel and all that, but would like to connect from outside browsers using ssl, for security reasons. I'm running: suse 8.2 Squirrelmail 1.4.4 Apache 1.3 (I couldn't get squirrelmail to work with Apache2) (Havent' tried this on my 9.1 box) Running internet thru a small box firewall/nat/router. Understand your point, but each time you start vnc you will have to start X (take longer to come up). Also, if you are more than 1 person accessing the server with VNC then what. Even been headless you might want to have in init 5 anyway, otherwise you might have to change some script that will start X when VNC is call (not sure it is worth all the effort). You should use shh and tunnel X windows application on your screen if you do not want to have a full X desktop. Just change the X fowarding to yes in /etc/ssh/sshd_config. ntp client

I set up the ntp client in yast to use an ntp server, but it only seems to synchronize on boot. When is it supposed to synchronize? How do I adjust the schedule? I've tried running ntpdate, but that says the socket's in use or something and I think it's because setting up the ntp client installed and started the ntp server. Thanks! Adaptec RAID

I have an Adaptec 2100S RAID controller coming to me, when I surfed the Adaptec site, I couldn't find the Storaga Manager utilities for SuSE Linux at all, and the driver for SuSE up to v7.0... Anyone with ideas on how to run this controller with SuSE 9.2?

Finding non-YOU updates?

Hi: I dread ever trying to find anything on the Suse/Novell website. It seems so complicated. I simply want to be able to download packages of current software such as Mozilla 1.7.5 and OpenOffice 1.1.4 These are typically not updated in YOU, as YOU seems only to do bugfixes, and usually only serious ones. Just keeping up with the current versions of software such as these packages is generally not possible with Suse unless you get the next version, or install vanilla software from their originators which may break integration with the desktop by bypassing Suse's customizations. Upon some digging, I discovered through this list that there are Mozilla and Firefox RPMs compiled for Suse 9.1. However, these are not made very obvious by any links such as: "Click here for Suse developer contributed updates to important software packages not updated by YOU..." After which one could parse out to different versions, etc., with a warning that you may break your system by updating beyond the originally installed versions (ie, non-YOU updates). If for some odd reason you decide to imagine that you are seeking support rather than an updated package (that isn't available from YOU), you might type in "mozilla" here: http://portal.suse.com/PM/page/search.pm In which case you might find this page: http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2002/09/mozilla.html But noticing it "applies to 8.0" you might just as quickly disregard it. If you persist to the ftp link provided, you will get the packages. But they come in with horrible bandwidth. A typical mirror doesn't have these packages, because they aren't officially part of Suse Linux. There doesn't seem to be an update for OpenOffice. Hopefully it will work the same if I update from the OO.org vanilla packages. Basically the only way to update things is to wander aimlessly among the ftp site, hoping to find things. You would think you found the holy grail for instance here: ftp://suse.mirrors.tds.net/pub/suse/i386/supplementary/README.txt But while this has some stuff, it doesn't have this: ftp://suse.mirrors.tds.net/pub/projects/ The Novell site is a maze.
