Segmentation Faults - Solved

I posted recently about segmentation faults at startup that had occurred in Firefox, Mozilla & Opera, making them impossible to run. These started after having tried installation of an update to the Vlc plugin. All browsers were working perfectly fine before this. FWIW, as an archive reference for others who perhaps face a similar problem, I just thought I would post my solution, explaining the logic process I followed. I don't know how but it would appear that the xineplugin.so became corrupt (or in some conflict) when I installed the vlc plugin rpm. I suspect corrupt (perhaps overridden?) because removing the vlcplugin rpm did not fix the problem. I found the solution by a simple process of logical elimination. I always place original plugin files in /usr/lib/browser-plugins. I then replicate that directory through symlinks in /opt/MozillaFirefox/lib/plugins. I made a backup copy of my bookmarks file and moved it to safety. I then uninstalled Firefox in its entirety, being careful to remove $HOME-based directories etc. I then used apt-get to re-install Firefox. It ran just fine, so, problem was definitely in old (plugin) config. The re-installation gave me a 'default' set of plugins. I compared the two directories above and, one by one, added symlinks for the plugins still in /u/l/b and not in the new /o/M/l/p - running firefox from a terminal window (to see errors) after each one. It fell over when I added the symlink for the xineplugin.so. Removed the link again, worked fine. Solution found!! Mind you, it could have been one starting with 'a' not 'x'?! Mplayer and Kaffeine plugins work so I have just left the rogue out. Hope the logic outline helps someone? This does raise a question in my mind about the use of /usr/lib/browser-plugins though. Firefox obviously does not look there, in my case anyway, so what does. I thought it was a new 'central repository' that all SuSE browsers under SuSE would use. Is that only if you install from SuSE dvd perhaps? Paul.

Update with LVM and Raid

Hi! Here is howto update SuSE 9.1 to 9.2 if you're using LVM for your system partitions except root (e.g. usr, var, tmp, ...) and, optionally, on top of RAID. For the curious: Why not use LVM for the root filesystem too? Well, using LVM for root should be possible too, but IMHO it's just too much hassle for now. It requires an initial ramdisk _every_ time and is badly supported by rescue media (if it all). Fortunately, as LVM support improves, this won't be an issue in the future, I hope. When trying to do a regular "Manual Update", you'll get a requester telling you that Yast2 can't update because the partitions can't be mounted (or something like that, I can't recall the exact wording). Here is what to do: * First of all, before starting the update (either boot into the rescue system or do this just before you reboot), edit your current /etc/fstab (perhaps make a backup copy just in case...) and comment _all_ filesystems which are not required for the update. Please note that the above is really IMPORTANT! During the update process, Yast2 will ask you for the root partition of the system to update. It reads the /etc/fstab from there and tries to mount all filesystems listed. It seems to me, that Yast2 fails if it cannot mount _all_ mounts listet there. Therefore, I'd recommend to comment out any filesystem which is not required for the update. * Boot with Installation-CD (either CD1 or ISO-image in boot directory of FTP distribution) * Select "Manuall Installation" * Load your required kernel modules for the update if necessary, e.g. network modules if you update over the network * Whenever ready, select "Start Installation or System" * Select "Start Installation or Update" * Select your source medium * After booting into Ramdisk, follow the Update until you're supposed to "Select the partition or system to update" * Now hit <Ctrl-Alt-F2> to switch to another virtual console * Here is your last chance to edit your fstab if you haven't already done so. Mount your root filesystem, edit your fstab there and unmount. * Run the following commands (all in your path): raidautorun vgscan vgchange -a y Now your logical volumes should be active. If you don't use RAID, you don't need to run raidautorun. It doesn't hurt if you do either, though (does nothing then). * Hit <Alt-F7> to switch back to Yast2 * Click on ok Now, your old system should be listed under "Selected for Update!" and you can proceed to untie the package dependencies. Lastly, don't forget to uncomment your filesystems in your /etc/fstab again after you're done with the update. I hope this helps! Dear my friends.... I use SuSE 9.2. I just bought an external HD Trekstor 160 GB. This HD use USB 2.0. I don't know, how I can mount the HD. I tried to mount this way : mkdir /media/extusbhd mount /dev/st01 /media/extusbhd . but it did not work Please teach me how to use it in SuSE 9.2. When trying to attach to your server it is confused as to which address to use. [SLE] Suse ships buggy build of Python in 9.2 (UNICODE)

It seems Suse has shipped a buggy build of Python in 9.2. That appears to lead to certain problems with UNICODE. See http://tinyurl.com/4k3au and in comp.lang.python Serge Orlov's reply in thread "Re: UTF-8 in German, Scandinavian letters". Sorry if the subject has been discussed on earlier occasions without my noticing, but if you're wrestling with UNICODE in Suse 9.2 this might be useful information. Hopefully Suse will ship a new & improved version of Python soon. /DWM
