HAL and Iomega REV disks

I am trying to use IOMEGA REV disks with SUSE 10. I am having an initial problem with the system insisting on mounting them read-only. Using the SUSE 10 release notes as a starting point, I have added a policy to have it not be mounted read-only. I used this technique to great effect with a USB memory stick. Missing applications.

Hi, After downloading the latest version of SuSE (I've been using it since 6.4), I was for the 1:st time missing some of the programs that I usually use. 1) Postgresql server 2) Zope 3) ncftp 4) Scribus I belive that we should add those packages again. For example in the DTP area, we don't have a single program today. If I feel that I am missing programs that should be a part of a distribution of a size like SuSE, I am pretty sure I am not the only one. What do the rest of you think of this matter? Failure to boot Asus P5GD2 Board with suse-10.0 CDs/DVDs

Asus P5GD2-Premium Board Pentium 640 CPU PS/2 Keyboard Cherry RS 6000 M ATi X600 Graphics Powercolor SATA Maxtor 250 GB disk I maintain some systems with the above configuration. They boot flawlessly with Knoppix, suse-9.2 and Windows XP-CDs. They work flawlessly with Knoppix, suse-9.2 and Windows XP. But it is NOT possible to boot them with (suse-9.3 or) Suse-10 installation or live CDs or DVDs, neither x64 nor x32 versions. I upgraded mb bios and DVD-Drive-Firmware, nothing helps. I changed BIOS PnP/OS, ACPI-2 and APIC Options, nothing helps. I see this: I insert the optical medium, boot, the Bonjour-Screen appears. Then when the grub boot menu appears, the keyboard is absolutely dead. So it is not possible to select an boot option. Therefore, after the time out, grub boots into the "boot from harddisk"-Menu-item (and get I/O-Error or dies). I checked the MD5-Sum of the optical disks and could use them to install other computer with other mainboards. mit freundlichen Grüßen Bernd Melchers --

If you have an video ipod, the product is very new and third-party Linux applications have not caught up with it yet. However, there are a lot of music transfer programs that also mount the iPod as a external drive. Then it would be a simple matter of which subdirectory you would have to put the video in. Good luck. It is a acquistion card and it won't sell if it takes a lot time to get the information out in a timely fashion. Investigate thoroughly your real time constraints. Ask the card vendor what you are planning to do and if they are trully professional, they will tell you which customers used their product to best effect. If you have to do any real-time acquistion, there are several distros that use a real time determistic kernel grafted into the Linux kernel. Don't be surprised if that is their support solution for their card. Cheap cards need this in order to collect data as they try to keep up as well as the on-board controller cards. Without any further info, it would be tough to speculate on what you want to do. Good luck on your project. Adam

Could someone with a LOT of programming experience please have a look at the link below (and associated pages) and give me some comments please. http://www.tincat.de/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=index&catid=&top… We are trying to "get" a games creator to release the version 2 of their game with a linux 2.6 release. They say the can't as it's not "suitable" and will require extensive "programming changes", they are currently only releasing for w$ (naturally). Even though Tincat is linux compatable! SLES9 -- sp2 Looking in the run level editor I noticed that: 1)SLPD was running and configured to run in level 3/5. Why? 2)SuSEfirewall2_final, SuSEfirewall_init = both running, but not configured for any runlevel??? What would start them, how and why? 3)SuSEfirewall2_setup no running. 4)UML (usermode linux) was running, but again, not listed as to be started in any runlevel??? 5)systat was not running .... is there a reason to not run this? I tried to pick as few packages as possible while installing, under the theory that if I don't need it and don't intend to use it .... I don't want it. And for sure, I don't want it running. I am pretty sure that I did NOT pick slpd, and UML, for example. Why would the system do so? Also ... to whom should we write to encourage novell to create "server type" choices for installation. It would be most handy to have, for example, the option to choose a: 1)lamp install (and then be given choices to activate de-activate within that choice) 2)Samba server 3)ldap server etc ..... I second that notion. I have seen it happen, with Mozilla, where something that I deem critical for me to use the program is deemed a minor drawback by the developers. Gnome is doing it somehow! When I switched from Fedora, I was using Gnome, so I have always used Gnome with SuSE. I tried out KDE and the problem didn't occur. I switched back to Gnome and the problem's back. So, I changed the subject of the email :) How does Gnome handle auto-mounting devices? I can't find anything meaningful in "Gnome Control Center" or in "Gnome Configuration Editor". I originally knew the drive was mounting twice, but I didn't know anything about HAL because I've always used autofs/automount in the past. I tried to troubleshoot the problem myself at first. The first place I looked was in /var/log/messages. So, when I saw two mounting messages there from HAL, I believed that was the culprit. Please read below... Sound problem

SUSE to XP

Desktop is XPSP2 notebook is SUSE 10.0. They are both on D-Link Wireless but using wired. When I'm in XP mode on notebook Network, File sharing and printing sharing work fine. I can't get SUSE to see XP and I can't get XP to see SUSE. There are an over whelming amount of Network options in SUSE and I have Googled it and read the man and can't find the answer. Evloution Delete

When ever I check my e-mail evolution purges my trash folder, that's fine. But there about 100 messages there that I can't delete. adaptec aic7902 (module aic79xx) don't load on sles9

Hi, We currently have a server with the above mention SCSI card. We are trying to install SLES9, but are failing to load the modules for the SCSI adapter. We tried loading the Adaptec RAID (aacraid) module - which loaded successfully, but when we continue to YaST, it claims there are no hard disks. When trying to load the AIC79xx module (AIC7902), which is allegedly the the module for this card, it comes up saying it failed to load the module. The AIC79xx module must work... What's wrong? Regards...

A gigabyte is a billion (milliard in Europe) bytes, and that is 1 GB. When the international scientific community makes an announcement to the contrary, I'll buy into this, but I can assure you, "G" will always mean 10^9. [SLE]Upgrade to 10.0 grub setup failed

I am trying to upgrade 9.3 to 10.0. After numerous packages failed to load, I finally got to the point where grub was to upgrade. At this point I get an error that it cannot find the hard drive / partition it is looking for. Is there some way that I can get to a command line and find out what is going on. Find out what hard drive it is actually seeing and where it should put grub? I'm afraid of trying to continue, because I am concerned I will lose access to the personal files which I have installed. I can't remember right now if they are ext3 or reiserfs.

KDE 3.4.0 b - Kmail forwarding

Hi, I am using Kmail from KDE 3.4.0 b. When I forward an email Inline, Kmail somtimes puts the original CC list as a CC list to the forwarded message. Is there a way to turn this off? When I forward an email I do not want anyone in the CC list just like "Forward as Attachment" does. YOU keeps offering updates I can't use

Hi, YOU periodically asks me to update my 9.3 system, but among the offerings are dozens of foreign language updates to Open Office that I can't use and haven't installed. There are also updates to Nvidia drivers (I have anATI card), and some other such stuff. I've been completely unsuccessful in making these offerings go away, so each time I get an update, I have to look through dozens of these garbage (for me) lists to find the two or three items I need. Is there really no way to make them disappear short of installing the software, then allowing the updates? John Perry
