Just another Problem with NVIDIA GeForce MX 4000

Hi! I've got a NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 4000 card because it's supposed to be "Linux compatible". I have SuSe 9.1 and as suggested I first installed the "Download NVIDIA(r) Graphics Driver" patch with YOU and startet sax2. But sax2 only found a "vesa compatible" card: # sax2 -p Chip: 0 is -> VESA Framebuffer Graphics 01:00:0 0x10de 0x0185 AGP fbdev So I tried the 6629-Driver from from the nvidia-homepage, but to no avail. Then I replaced the 'Driver "vesa"' line in /etc/X11/XF86Config with 'Driver "nvidia"' but then kdm and even sax2 came up any more (the system hangs with a black screen, even Ctrl+Alt+Bksp don't work. But when I try Ctrl+Alt+Del a messed up NVIDIA splash screen appears after some time and then the system reboots). I needed to use 'sax2 -l' to be able to start sax2 again. I read the other posts in this list concerning the MX 4000 problems and tried the 6111-driver as Barrie Hill suggested. I even recompiled the Kernel without the RivaFB-module but to no avail. Now I'm running it as a "Vesa-compatible card", wich makes no sense. Maybe someone has still an idea? Help would be highly appreciated. Postfix masquerading

I cannot seem to get Postfix to masquerade my mail by replacing @server.i.am.on to @my.real.domain by entering in the required field in the Yast MTA. If I set up aliases for each user on the machine (user->user(a)my.real.domain) then it works fine, but not globally. The Yast sidebar and Postfix instructions suggest I am doing the right thing, but obviously not. fglrxconfig on an ATI Radeon 7000?

Has anyone tried using fglrxconfig on an ATI Radeon 7000? I've been poking around trying to find ways to make the multihead part of the card work (using SuSE9.2), and everything I have found so far seem to point to fglrxconfig and needing a newer video card :-( A newer card isn't really much of an option since this is my work computer. So.. anyone have any suggestions? Is it a lost cause to try to get dualhead working on this older ATI card in SuSE9.2?

bootsplash problem

Hi ! I'm using Suse 9.2 Pro, on a AMD64 3000+ with 1,5 GB RAM and a Radeon X800 graphics card. My problem: The bootsplash is pink, and its graphics are not sharp. I guess it's my graphics card: When booting my old Suse 9.0 rescue system, that splash too has a colour engraving. Other graphics under KDE are perfect. Has anybody the same problem or knows a solution to this ? Any help is appreciated. Hendrik

Recommended server hardware for a LAMP server

I'm about to install my own colo server in a data center. I need to supply the hardware myself, and am free to pick any components that suit me as long as it fits in a rack (I assume a 1U form factor). Up until this time I have been running a very lowend tower server for use as a development server with only a few public sites. This will be for use mostly as a LAMP web server running content management systems; most sites will have low volume although a few are fairly high. Other than the LAMP sites, I do run a few moderate volume mailman mailing lists. I have a low budget and want to get the most bang for my buck. The network engineering folks I work with recommend HP DL320's, and they are an HP reseller and are "Windows People". They frequently buy off of the HP refurb list. The DL320 is a single processor 3ghz P4 expandable to 2gigs of RAM. My own inclination is to believe that memory is of supreme importance, and that AMD Opterons may be a better value. HP has an Opteron package (DL145) that's inexpensive with base RAM, but another gig of RAM is $1K. I've seen better deals, but the service and support HP offers is attractive. FWIW, I will have easy physical access to the server in the data center. Ideally (in my naive mind), I think I want a single Opteron that's dual capable, that exandable to many gigs of RAM. In that way, I can add RAM/Processors as needs grow and prices fall. I'd like to hear what the consensus is on the various elements of server selection; importance of various components, brand name vs. generic, Intel vs. AMD, ATA vs. SCSI, value of extended warranties, etc. TIA Rob

Anyone Migrate Heavy-Usage NFS Server from Sun to SLES 9?

Just curious if anyone has moved a solaris based NFS server(s) to SLES 9. (NFS servers with heavy enterprise load with say 5 TB+ of data) We tried moving these systems to Linux a few years back using the 2.4 kernel but due to the scheduler issues in pre 2.6 kernels it failed miserably. I was hoping the 2.6 kernel was up to the task so we can finally purge Sun and Veritas from our enterprise. Thx for any info

how to use udev

I recently upgraded my suse linux 9.1 to suse 9.2, then I can't see the palm pilot in the /dev/ttyUSB1. Searching via google I try to modify the udev rules, and to use this row: #PALM PILOT SYSFS{product}="Palm Handheld", NAME="pilot_any" But I continue to don't see the palm, can anyone help me? -- Calogero Bonasia

Ok.....I know it's been a long week and I'm a tad "raw" anyway, but trying to get CURRENT shipping model of a sound card that works out of the box with 9.2.....TRUELY "plug and play" really has me tourqed off!!! WHAT current model PCI (NOT expensive) sound cards fit this description or are there any?! And, by the way........SB Audigy LS ISN'T Alsa suppored......thought it was. Fred -- The only bug free software from MickySoft is still shrink-wrapped in their warehouse..."
