Help: Suse 9.1 box won't boot!

Hi: I have a Suse 9.1 box that has suddenly broke. It gets stuck with a message that I need to check the filesystem, but as you will see, there is apparently nothing wrong with the filesystem: The booting stops here and the following is a log of what I've done to fix it, without success: ... Loading console font lat9w-16.psfu -m trivial CK ... done fsck failed. Please repair manually and reboot. The root filesystem is currently mounted read-only. To remount it read-write do: bash# mount -n -o remount,rw / Attention: Only CONTROL-D will reboot the system in this maintenance mode. Shutdown or reboot will not work. Give root password for login: # mount /dev/sda2 on / type reiserfs (rw,acl,user_xattr) /dev/sda2 on / type reiserfs (rw,acl,user_xattr) # fsck /dev/sda2 fsck 1.34 (25-Jul-2003) reiserfsck 3.6.13 (2003 www.namesys.com) ... Partition /dev/sda2 is mounted with write permissions, cannot check it fsck.reiserfs /dev/sda2 failed (status 0x10). Run manually! # mount -n -o remount,ro / # fsck /dev/sda2 fsck 1.34 (25-Jul-2003) reiserfsck 3.6.13 (2003 www.namesys.com) ... Partition /dev/sda2 is mounted with write permissions, cannot check it fsck.reiserfs /dev/sda2 failed (status 0x10). Run manually! # mount /dev/sda2 on / type reiserfs (rw,acl,user_xattr) /dev/sda2 on / type reiserfs (rw,acl,user_xattr) Ok, so we see that the system tells me it is RO and I should check, but it is really RW and I can't check. Nor can I remount it RO. And there is the strange fact that mount shows it mounted twice. So I run the rescue system from CD: Rescue login: root Rescue:~# fsck /dev/sda2 ... reiserfsck --check started ... Replaying journal.. Reiserfs journal '/dev/sda2' in blocks [18..8211]: 0 transactions replayed Checking internal tree..finished Comparing bitmaps..finished Checking semantics tree: finished No corruptions found There are on the filesystem: Leaves 78819 Internal nodes 522 Directories 22794 Other files 303921 Data block pointers 9007004 (1123 of them are zero) Safe link 0 ... Reiserfsck finished Rescue:~# So that's it. There appears to be nothing wrong. Furthermore, I can mount it from the rescue and all the directories appear to be their, and the files in a few of the dirs I browsed. How to get Suse to stop getting stuck? Balsa is, or was, the default gnome mail program. It is slightly broken in SuSE, so I compiled it myself. I like it because it is very compatible with Pine (an email read or flagged in one shows as such in the other). But I usually prefer Pine because it is way faster and I prefer it's sort by thread and arrival order (ie, last updated thread first). Ah, now that I look... Same thing. That was the intention, anyway. But an email sent with Pine can be resent with balsa. The unfortunate thing (for me) is that Pine doesn't have a resend function, nor Mozilla, I think. Log files not compressing

Hi all! I have just noticed a problem with my logs files. Usually they are automatically compressed (gziped) regularly (usually every second day) depending on how large they are. However I have just noticed that they have stopped being compressed, so my logs are HUGE. The last time they were compressed was on the November 23. My /var/log/mail is now 58 mbs my /var/log/httpd/access_log is a whopping 1168 mbs my /var/log/httpd/error_log is a huge 768 mbs. The problem is that I don't know much about this process at all. I assume that it is a cronjob that automatically compresses the logs. How do I restart the compressing process? Thanks in advance, and regards from Denmark! Dan Eskildsen

UTC and localtime

Hey Group; Has SuSE been screwing around with the UTC and localtime again. Around SuSE 6 or 7 they had a problem which caused the clock to be set wrong every time you booted up again. If you set it with netdate or something and then shut it down. When you booted back up it was 6 hours off. It is 10:06PM (22:06) here right now. But the KDE clock is showing 19:36. I have since the last setting the time turned this machine off and back on several time. I have forgotten what I did to fix it! Looks like the problem is far worse. I tried a Western Digital WD800 ATA/100 drive and it gives the same problem. Maybe the kernel that SuSE 9.2 ships with has an issue with the mobo. Does anybody know of a Gigabyte GA-8TRS350MT system that runs SuSE 9.2? I see there is a newer BIOS version out. Post the two (should be only two) results that show up. the following are mine. if ther are different from yours, try deleting your values and readding. network.protocol-handler.app.mms user set string /usr/local/bin/gmplayer network.protocol-handler.external.mms user set boolean true also see if Kaffeine will play the required mms stream directly without opening from a browser. i know gmplayer plays it directly using the URL. If these tips dont help, we can try another route. Thanks Ganesh

Remastering Linux

Building X.Org from source

I have a laptop with an S3 Twister-K graphics chip and Im want to enable its OpenGL support under SuSE 9.2. I have found a page (http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/Building) which has instructions for doing just that, but it involves compiling a new version of X.Org, MESA and DRM. I don't think that I can do any of this via RPM, so I was wondering what issues I might have with YAST once I'm finished. Paul
