Koqueror and cifs

Whenever I access a mounted cifs share in Konqueror, Konqueror crashes. This worked fine in 9.1, and Windows 200 smbfs shares are fine. Any ideas? mouse/trackball cleaning (OT)

Much of the standard "knowledge" says to clean mice and trackballs with alcohol and cotton swabs--Q-Tips. I have found this to be useless. When you open the device, you will find lint on the little rubber rollers that contact the ball. What you need to do is to scrape the lint off, using the edge of a knife blade. Also, look for lint on the roller-bearings at the ends of the axles that the little rubber rollers are on, and get rid of it. Finally, make sure that the little hair-spring wires that push the rollers against the ball are really doing so, or if not, bend them so they do. If there is animal hair adhering to the ball, remove it. This is a job for sure eyes and careful hands, and a good light. I use a high-intensity desk lamp, a sharp pair of tweezers, a small pen-knife, (an X-Acto will work fine) and a binocular magnifier, obtainable from Edmund Scientific, or (cheaper) from several tool companies. You may not need the last, if you are young and sharp-eyed. As you surmise, I have just done the aforementioned task, with good results. --doug

How do I kill module ds9490r?

I use 1-wire devices -- little chips and buttons made by Dallas Semiconductors that can monitor temperature, humidity, voltages, and switch things on and off. In fact there is quite a community around them, with everything from home HVAC and weatherstations, to door access control. The devices connect through either a serial or USB adapter, and that's where my problem lies. I head a software effort that has adapted the chips to linux, as a filesystem, among other ways. See http://owfs.sf.net It worked perfectly until SuSE 9.2 -- and the reason is SUSE now includes a kernel module ds9490r that attaches to the 1-wire USB adapter. And does nothing. It is an idea with no implementation. Unfortunately, I have to manually rmmod the module before my software, which uses libusb can attach to the device. I understand the wish to make SuSE as totipotent as possible out of the box. Loading a module with no utility that breaks existing software doesn't help, however. So, as simpler question, how do I disable autoloading of the ds9490r? Paul

How to update subversion on a Suse 9.0 Pro

Hello, I'm working on a Suse 9.0 Pro with Subversion. The installed version is an old one and I would like to update it. > svn --version svn, version 0.27.0 (dev build) compiled Jun 9 2004, 14:52:54 In Yast, my software source media are: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/9.0 ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.0/yast-sour… If I have a look in 'Install and Remove Software' from Yast, things installed are: - subversion 0.27.0-209 (available version 0.27.0-95) - subversion-doc 0.27.0-54 (available version 0.27.0-95) - subversion-server 0.27.0-209 (available version 0.27.0-95) As the latest version (1.1.2) is not available from Yast, I tried to install the RPMs available here: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/poeml/subversion/9.0-i386/ So using Konqueror, I tried to install the package subversion-1.1.2-2.i586.rpm but I get dependencies errors: > subversion requires libneon.so.24 and having a look in Yast, I have version 0.23.9-116 installed and Yast does not propose me to upgrade. So I've been looking on the web for it and I found that: http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/4/idpl/1514988/com/libneon-0.24.7-alt1… Using Konqueror and Yast, I tried to install libneon-0.24.7-alt1.i586.rpm but again I got into trouble: > libneon requires libcrypto.so.4 > libneon requires libggsapi_krb5.so.2 > libneon requires libk5crypto.so.3 > libneon requires libkrb5.so.3 > libneon requires libssl.so.4 and I'm pretty sure that if I try to upgrade these libraries, I will fall on other dependencies problems and so on... Network card + CPU load

Hi everybody, I have noticed that on my workstation (P-III 1ghz, 512mb, Intel chipset, 100mbit 3com network), I can copy stuff over the network at about 8-9mb/s at the best of times. When I do this, my CPU usage is quite high. I notice the same thing on my home PC (2ghz Athlon, 384mb, Via chipset, SMC network card - tulip driver). On both these machines the CPU load seems to be directly proportional to the transfer rate on the network interface. I can only assume that his is because both these cards do a lot of the hard work in software, in the driver. Can anyone confirm/deny/explain this? Either ways, our office would be migrating to a gigabit network soon, and I'm tasked with finding good network cards. Can anyone recommend a gigabit network chipset that fully implemented in hardware - i.e. the network card itself does all the heavy lifting. Firewall headaches with NFS

HI there all. Snowy weather over here in Denmark. What's the weather like where you are? I have been trying to setup a NFS server and a NFS client this afternoon. Two linux machines. I can get it to work via YAST on both machines but only if I DEACTIVATE the firewall on the server. (there is no firewall running on the client, though I'd to set that up as well at some point.) I have been surfing the net trying to find out what ports to open and have discovered that the NFS ports are dynamic. I tried opening ports 111, 2049 as well as 2100:2499 and 600:1399 but still without success. The client can only connect to the server if the firewall is off. Any ideas? Sorry, this is probably just a stupid newbie question! Hope you can help. Regards, Dan

Help: Suse 9.1 box won't boot!

Hi: I have a Suse 9.1 box that has suddenly broke. It gets stuck with a message that I need to check the filesystem, but as you will see, there is apparently nothing wrong with the filesystem: The booting stops here and the following is a log of what I've done to fix it, without success: ... Loading console font lat9w-16.psfu -m trivial CK ... done fsck failed. Please repair manually and reboot. The root filesystem is currently mounted read-only. To remount it read-write do: bash# mount -n -o remount,rw / Attention: Only CONTROL-D will reboot the system in this maintenance mode. Shutdown or reboot will not work. Give root password for login: # mount /dev/sda2 on / type reiserfs (rw,acl,user_xattr) /dev/sda2 on / type reiserfs (rw,acl,user_xattr) # fsck /dev/sda2 fsck 1.34 (25-Jul-2003) reiserfsck 3.6.13 (2003 www.namesys.com) ... Partition /dev/sda2 is mounted with write permissions, cannot check it fsck.reiserfs /dev/sda2 failed (status 0x10). Run manually! # mount -n -o remount,ro / # fsck /dev/sda2 fsck 1.34 (25-Jul-2003) reiserfsck 3.6.13 (2003 www.namesys.com) ... Partition /dev/sda2 is mounted with write permissions, cannot check it fsck.reiserfs /dev/sda2 failed (status 0x10). Nor can I remount it RO. And there is the strange fact that mount shows it mounted twice. So I run the rescue system from CD: Rescue login: root Rescue:~# fsck /dev/sda2 ... reiserfsck --check started ... Replaying journal.. Reiserfs journal '/dev/sda2' in blocks [18..8211]: 0 transactions replayed Checking internal tree..finished Comparing bitmaps..finished Checking semantics tree: finished No corruptions found There are on the filesystem: Leaves 78819 Internal nodes 522 Directories 22794 Other files 303921 Data block pointers 9007004 (1123 of them are zero) Safe link 0 ... Reiserfsck finished Rescue:~# So that's it. There appears to be nothing wrong. Furthermore, I can mount it from the rescue and all the directories appear to be their, and the files in a few of the dirs I browsed. How to get Suse to stop getting stuck? Balsa is, or was, the default gnome mail program. It is slightly broken in SuSE, so I compiled it myself. I like it because it is very compatible with Pine (an email read or flagged in one shows as such in the other). But I usually prefer Pine because it is way faster and I prefer it's sort by thread and arrival order (ie, last updated thread first). Ah, now that I look... Pine, Balsa... woods! ;-) But KMail, Mozilla, Evolution, Mutt... any more "woods"? > Anyway, KMail has "Send Again" in the "Message" menu, but it can only > be used for mail that you originated in the first place, it cannot be > applied to mail you received.. Same thing. That was the intention, anyway. But an email sent with Pine can be resent with balsa. The unfortunate thing (for me) is that Pine doesn't have a resend function, nor Mozilla, I think.
