KDE is a C++ desktop, GNOME and Windows are C based. As such, KDE bas a lot of virtual-table linking that has to go on before a program starts. You can use the pre-linking option which will pre-link what it can before hand. This produces wonderful results, though it is still slower than C-based (because the linking is still much less.) KDE is a nirvana of design. It has a high class-reuse, and because of that, there is a lot of linking. Unfortunately the linker that links these things at program start was not designed to handle all the linking. KDE developers have therefore chosen an approach that sucks for slower machines, but it produces a easy-to-program feature. For instance, the text-box automatic spell checking was easily added because all text boxes come from the same class. Other programs have an easy time extending the classes that are provided to suit their needs. Programming in KDE is a joy. Running it is not. But with processor speeds doubling every 18 months, the KDE project will suck for users, but will ultimately be the more maintainable design. Look at the features of each Release from GNOME and KDE. KDE achieves more. And you numers do seem low. Maybe Suse diabled pre-linking in their build? I'd suggest compiling KDE yourself using Konstruct over the weekend. It will take you probably 2 days to compile all of it. Once started though, you can let it go. When you are done, follow the instructions and you can check out the Konstruct compile of KDE without effecting your system, only your user account, and only while you have the enironment variables set. Raid-1 Question (more info)

Well it turns out that md0 is in state:dirty,no-errors for about 19 days!! Any good ideas anyone?? Is there something that I can do to change the "dirty" state?? Any howtos or infos on stripping down Suse for embedded like application ?

Hi, I'd kindly ask for any pointers or more info on stripping down Suse Linux. I need it for stable Asterisk PBX system- but wouldn't like to switch from Suse to som other distro. Any experiences, web sites on this matter ? Regards, Robert.

External monitor

I'm confused. While I know that is no surprise to many of you, there is probably good reason this time. I want to get an external monitor for my HP laptop for two reasons: preserving the existing LCD monitor on the lappy, and providing a larger high-resolution area for doing photo editing. I haven't looked at specs for new hardware in years, and am surprised at how litttle information is presented, or I should say, how little useful information is buried in the volumes of marketting info on the OEMs' web sites. For example, my HP has an Nvidia GeForce FX Go5700 graphics card. It's been ages since I've looked at graphics cards specs to choose a compatible monitor and there always used to be some sort of a listing of frequencies and resolutions the card supported. I can't find that for this card. I do see some references to frequencies, but nothing that shows me what monitors it will work with, and the only resolution is the ubiquitous "native resolution" numbers that seem to indicate what the cards and monitors are comfortable running at. I've looked at tons of sites for spec's, downloaded lots of PDF files, visited technical review sites, and none of the information gives me any useful information for chosing a monitor. Has the method of specifying compatibility changed in the past few years, or does on just make a guess, build a configuration and hope for the best? Does anyone know if this card will support 1600 x 1200 monitors, or even more horizontal resolution in wide-screen monitors? Or better yet, point me to a man page where I can read and understand this black magic. Thanks, Jim

Raid-1 Question

I just noticed a very weird thing in my Raid-1 configuration. I copied a file from a directory onto my /dev/md0 device. I then mounted one of the 2 drives of md0 onto a directory and cd to it. The file was not there! I also mounted the other of the 2 drive of md0 onto another directory and cd to that one and still the file was not there. I then cd to /dev/md0 and saw the file being there again!!!! Suddendly all the network services died

I suddently noticed that all network services didn't work No client can connect to them (mysql, ssh, ftp) xinetd is running at the boot time, the same with the mysql and ssh. Do you know what is wrong?

KDE Menu editing

I've tried with limited success to restrict the applications that my daughters 'see' when they login with there accounts. The Menu Editing feature seems flaky. I've noticed this with just about every distro I've used and Gnome used to have similar issues. If I remove a menuitem, it won't take effect for some time. Often, it will not remove the item at all, but simply move it to "Applications" and then I have to "re-delete" the item. It just seems like venturing into the edit tool is to do so with low expectations. Has anyone else seen this? -- <<JAV>>

Remove/Disable GUI?
