Ok, I followed this indications exactly and everything worked perfect (try some 3d acceleration games) except when logging out. The X server exits in a wrong way: The normal SuSE blue screen with a status bar (which gives you the option of pressing F2 to see what is going on), is replaced by this broken screen (green and blue squares as out of resolution) on which I can do nothing. Eventually the shutdown or rebooting process continue and everything is then normal. This is not particularly important except that I assume something must be wrong with the installation of the driver. Has anybody experienced this? What do you guys recomend? Felipe.

Continuous Boot Loop

Hi All, Me again. When I boot the computer, I choose SuSE and the screen goes blank (normal) then it returns to the GRUB screen. Anyone know why it does this? It did this when I was installing SuSE. I gave up and went to bed that time. When I woke up the next morning I booted the comp and it booted up normally. I booted to the install disk and chose to boot to installed system and it worked fine. Rebooted and it did the same thing (looped back to GRUB). So I booted to the install disk again and chose to reinstall GRUB (neat feature that). Rebooted, and same thing (looped back to GRUB). Why would it do this? I didn't do anything this time, honest. Well actually I just finished burning the SuSE live eval CD and booting to it (took forever). Any ideas. Thanks Russ

Thank You Everyone those who responded to my inuiry and for your point of view. I agree that in most cases we never get to see throughput beyond 44Kbps. I failed to mention that my PC is configured to dual boot between Win98 and Suse. For some reason I can get 44Kbps from the winmodem running on Win98. This is why it had me wondering of there was room for improvement. I realize that this issue involves two kinds of modems. But I don't see any reason why the winmodem should outperform the PCMCIA Megarhertz/USR modem by 1000bps. Happy New Year, Peter _______________________________________________ No banners. No pop-ups. Linux Video Recording Hardware?

I think this is the first time that I post a question instead of answering one in this list :) I would like to be able to archive some of my old video tapes by converting them to MPEG and burning them on CD-ROM. I assume I need some kind of MPEG Encoder card for this, preferably with a TV Tuner as well as a normal video input port. What kind of hardware (Manufacturer/Model) would you recommend for this? What are your experiences? Any useful URLs? I've seen the VDR pages, but this looks like you need a Satellite Dish, if you want to record normal broadcast TV. I only have cable, but it would be neat if there is a way to record cable TV as well. But the main focus is on recording from a video source. Starting Kde from Runlevel 3

Hi, I've just installed 9.0 Pro and everything seems pretty ok. But I discovered that when I start Kde from runlevel 3 with startx, there are lot of error messages, but if I start-up my system normally, it means without 3 in the paramater box from GRUB, none of these messages appears... So, what's going on? Second question, a silly one, how can i switch to Gnome? Thanks

SuSE 9 Pro Symlink Missing?

I am trying to get Sync to work with my Kyocera 6035 cellphone/PDA via a USB-Serial adapter from sewelldev.com All of the USB ports seem to be set up OK as I tried mknod /dev/usb/ttyUSBx x 188 x on 1 through 10 and was informed that they were already present. Sync is looking for dev/pilot so I tried symlink /dev/usb/ttyUSB4 /dev/pilot and discovered that symlink doesn't exist. How please, do I make this happen? Hi All, I went to Nvidia's site to get the newest video drivers. However, I'm not sure which one I need. This computer is an Intel 3ghz. So which one should I use: Linux A32 Linux A64 Linux AMD64 Thanks Russ

Matrox G550 3D acceleration activated on Suse Linux 9.0

Just a quick note on my successful installation of 3D acceleration on my MATROX G550 dual head graphics card. Allows me to play the arcade game Armagetron on SUSE Linux 9.0. see also ftp://ftp.matrox.com/pub/mga/archive/linux/2003/lnx30notes.txt 1. get mgadrivers-3.0.tgz from www.matrox.com 2. tar xvzf mgadrivers-3.0.tgz 3. cd mgadrivers 4. su 5. sh install.sh 6. change in /etc/sysconfig/kernel MODULES_LOADED_ON_BOOT=" cdrom ide-cd ide-scsi" to MODULES_LOADED_ON_BOOT=" cdrom ide-cd ide-scsi mga agpgart" 7. cp /etc/X11/XF86Config /etc/X11/XF86Config_bac 8. change in /etc/X11/XF86Config Section "Module" Load "dbe" Load "type1" Load "freetype" Load "glx" Load "speedo" Load "v4l" Load "extmod" EndSection to Section "Module" Load "dbe" Load "type1" Load "freetype" Load "glx" Load "dri" Load "speedo" Load "v4l" Load "extmod" EndSection and save in /etc/X11/XF86Config_with_3D You can leave Multihead activated.
