Inspiron sounds problems mostly solved, Except Xine with DVDs...help!

Hi all, I mostly solved my earlier sound problems (Dell Inspiron 2650). Somehow the modem driver installation had corrupted the ALSA drivers. Once i removed and reinstalled those (from Yast2) then sound came back. However, I am unable to get any sound from DVDs in Xine. I compiled and installed the newest version from xinehq.de. Everything else plays just fine, with sound, but playing a DVD I just get picture without sound. I did install libdvdcss. What should I do? SuSE 9.0 On K7S5A Pro Gforce$ T440-Se I waited some time to re Try THE Nvidia Driver On The (4496-pkg2) I get No Kernel Header. then it wants to check the Nvidia site so go online to Nvidia and nothing found. Like Whats a kernel Header. its the 2.4-21 144 Atholon patch From Suse Read aloto of posts Some problems noted with the New Driver I decided to wait and try again later I try the (5328) no video any ideas -- page <gage(a)sysmatrix.net>

Internet Video

I've been trying to play a video clip on c-span .org. I've only been able to play it on XP with RealOne Player. I have RealPlayer as a plugin for netscape (I think, audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin) but when I click on the video link I only get the message 'document done' but the video doesn't play. Anyone know how to watch video on c-span? Thanks, Jerome

Charset problems

Hi, I'm using Kde with Suse 9.0 pro in English, my keyboard's layout is english also. My problem is with turkish caracters... I can't see them correctly, but this is not always true. For exemple in KMail, those caracters appear correctly in mails, but not in the mail list section, so I have two identical caracters in the same application, but one is correct, the other not. This is similar for Knode or Address Book also. I've looked for some global default encoding parameter in yast but i couldn't find out. Any idea? thanks

I have hacked together a 16-bit OSS (compatability) driver for it if you are interested. I have plans to write a native alsa and arts driver for it. The voices that festival produces are _slightly_ more natural sounding, but festival takes several seconds to start up on my K6-2/500 whereas rsynth starts instantaneously even on a K5/100. I used to use saytime to "chime" the time, but it writes headerless mu-law files to /dev/audio, and that causes SuSE-9.0 to hang solid looping, saying the time over and over, and the computer becomes totally unresponsive (an alsa OSS compatibility bug I have been too lazy to report). I now use a perl script to call rsynth to chime the quarter hour (also available if you are interested, but it is such a simple script I doubt there will be any takers.)

No sound card

SuSeconfig Question

Does anyone know what configuration file controls the start order for the services in the /etc/rc.d/rcx.d folders? Specifically, which file resets the order to the SuSe defaults if the order has been modified? I know how to disable SuSeconfig, but at this point I am not interested in that. I simply want SuSeconfig to stop changing the startup order of the PCMCIA service. With Mandrake and Redhat once I changed the startup order so that PCMCIA started before network I *never* had to worry about Redhat's up2date or the Mandrake update utility changing it back. SuSeconfig on the other hand insists on setting PCMCIA to S08pcmcia which comes after S05network. I set pcmcia to be S04pcmcia so it starts before network. This insures that I always get a network connection no matter what network I am connecting to. I realize that hotplugger is supposed to start pcmcia but it is simply unreliable when it comes to pcmcia cards. I should note however, it works fine with USB devices. Before I changed the boot order so that PCMCIA would start first I would not get a network connection when first booted up. This because when the network is set to start first and the only connection to the network is a wireless pcmcia card, that hasn't started yet, you can't get an DHCP assigned ipaddress. So if someone can tell me which file I can modify so the startup order of PCMCIA won't be reset when yast or YOU is run I would be grateful. You were right I got this crappy screen with ctr-alt-f1. I tried the 4496 but no success and trying to install 4363 got an installation error that I think should not be bothered to get into. I think (don't know what you think) that trying to go to even older drivers won't be a solution. I'll try to live with this until a new driver comes. Regards, Felipe.

OT - SA defeating thesauri

Hi, It seems that the latest spate of spam is loaded with seemingly arbitrary words to defeat the Baysian processes of SpamAssassin, such as "thayer earsplitting fatal scatterbrain landfill circumstance configuration dowling system smokescreen incompletion oscillatory burgeon boorish mallow repudiate elysee bermuda cohort upbring unix bitnet depressive enigma" I guess that they're doing this to increase the message size with un-spamlike words to decrease the ratio of spam-like words to non-spam-like words? Does this sound right? Anyone heard of this and/or have a sense of how to defeat this strategy with current available configurable settings on SA? Spastic? Anything? TIA

Sound problems on Inspiron 2650

Hi all, I have some puzzling sound problems on my Dell Inspiron 2650. It was working fine using ALSA - then I installed the driver for the modem and now the sound is not working. (The modem seems to work fine on the rare occasions I use it.) There is a conflict somewhere, I suspect, but I am not knowledgeable enough to even find it, much less fix it. There does not appear to be an IRQ conflict, but that's all I know how to check for. I'm not sure exactly what I did with the modem install but I suspect that to be the cause of my problem. I don't know where to proceed from here, though. Thanks for any help!!
