Linux Video Recording Hardware?

Hi,
First of all, Happy New Year to all of you!
I think this is the first time that I post a question instead of answering
one in this list :)
I would like to be able to archive some of my old video tapes by
converting them to MPEG and burning them on CD-ROM. I assume I need some
kind of MPEG Encoder card for this, preferably with a TV Tuner as well as
a normal video input port.
What kind of hardware (Manufacturer/Model) would you recommend for this?
What are your experiences? Any useful URLs? I've seen the VDR pages, but
this looks like you need a Satellite Dish, if you want to record normal
broadcast TV. I only have cable, but it would be neat if there is a way to
record cable TV as well. But the main focus is on recording from a video
source.
Thanks in advance for your help,
LenZ

I've used both Linux Media Labs LML33 (pricy but nice) and Pinnacle DC10+ (out of production but available on, say, ebay) card for capture to either avi or qt files with lavrec. Encoding to mpeg is the tricky part, and I've never been able to get that quite right, at least with Linux. Lots of help, examples, in the man pages, and at www.dvdrhelp.com (even somewhat Linux friendly). Also check the list archives for subject "Video Capture", and the mjpeg-user list from sourceforge. Thus a single Video Capture Card like Rich use (Mine is a Pinnacle PCTV-Rave with chipset Bt878). To encode and compress Video signals I use MPlayer (don't use the SuSE package, it is crippled). Mplayer tarballs (quick installation on SuSE-8.2) with the codecs are available at http://www.mplayerhq.hu . Codecs to be installed in /usr/local/lib/codecs. When all is installed, just try (I check first if TV signal is read with KwinTV): ## Capture signal TV mencoder -tv driver=v4l:width=640:height=480 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=1500:vhq -oac mp3lame -lameopts br=128 tv:// -o test.avi -endpos 00:01:30 mencoder is part of mplayer installation (encoding part). Check all parameters with 'man mplayer'. Then read with 'mplayer test.avi'. You even don't need to be in X11 with SuSE-8.2. Little trick: don't forget to set iGain ON with Kmix and the little red button on the 'Line' vector must be on during capture. As far as I know, Linux Media Labs (http://www.linuxmedialabs.com/) is the only manufacturer which supports video processing on Linux. I would also like to convert my old video tapes to MPEG (probably SVCD). Unfortunately, cards supporting compression are a bit expensive and the one without compression requires faster computer than I have at home now. I tried to do it with the cheap Hauppauge WinTV card but my 550 MHz PIII was too slow to capture both sound and video in good quality. -- A.M.
