How up-to-date are the packages available for 9.0?

I'm looking to transition over to SUSE 9.0 and was wondering how 'up-to-date' of a system I can have. From what I've read, apt-get seems to be one of the primary methods of updating & adding software to the system. Do the repositories contain newer versions of software soon after they're released (Mozilla 1.6b, Evolution 1.5, Gnome 2.4.1, PHP 5.X, etc.)? Pretty simple to update the system en masse? Thanks, and I'm looking forward to trying it out!

User .xintrc ignored ?

Hello world, Could it be that the .xinitrc file in my home directory is ignored ? Reason I ask is that I have added in the .xintrc file in my home directory the following (near the end of the file) : # # Add your own lines here... # xmodmap -e 'keycode 96 = EuroSign' However, after my user-session is started, key 96 still renders the F12 function and not the eurosign. When I go to shell and give the same command then it works OK. So, my preliminary conclusion is that the .xinitrc file in my home directory is ignored at startup of the session. Is that possible ? Hi All, I have installed the Win Core fonts but I have many other fonts that I would like to use. Can they be installed in SuSE 9.0 and how? Thanks Russ

text based rpm tool question

Hi all, I'm looking for the text based admin tools that are available. I have Celeron 366Mhz system with 256MB of RAM but it's still not very responsive. I'm comfortable with the CLI, but I don't know all the tools. Package Installation: When I used Debian I was very comfortable and preferred using the text based apt tool. What is the tool for installing rpm's? Does it automagically check and install dependencies? I think that it's just "rpm" but I don't know what to type. I think I remember someone told me to use "rpm -Uvh <package>" all the time when I was using RedHat, but I don't know if that's correct. Thanks, Will

GTK 1.x and 2.x apps under KDE

Hi. I installed a Plastik theme in SuSE 9.0, applied it in KDE Control Center, created and edited .gtkrc and .gtkrc-2.0 files in my home directory. But still gtk apps use Geramik style. Where can be the problem? Alex
