'Anyone using the Epson Stylus Photo R800 and/or Epson Stylus Photo 2200 with SUSE 9.0? Or, another current model HIGH QUALITY (not real expensive) photo printer that better than 2880x1440 and has seperate color ctg. Thanks! nervous dual-boot query

My friend wants to try Linux so I said he could use my SUSE 8.2pro disks to try an install alongside his current XP pro. I gather from here and elsewhere that this is OK with SUSE. Perhaps he will like it and we can share the cost of SUSE9 (both a bit strapped for cash). I'm slightly nervous about "helping" him, as I'm not exactly an expert. Also my own install is SUSE only so I'm not sure about the dual-boot thing. His filesystem is NTFS, no partitions. I figure he should use partition magic to make a Linux partition before we start with SUSE. Is this correct? And grub is the way to go re dual-booting presumably? I ask because he was going on about some windows boot-loader. Oh no I remember, it was boot-magic. Jake

Ripping CDs: alternatives to kaudiocreator

Does the SuSE distribution include any better alternatives for ripping tracks from CDs than kaudiocreator (which comes in the kmultimedia package for KDE)? The kaudiocreator program has several drawbacks: 1. It seems to be hardwired to read from /dev/cdrom; I can't find any way of telling it to read from anywhere else. 2. It has no documentation that I can find. 3. It doesn't allow for ripping just the initial part of a track. Paul Abrahams

SuSE 8.2 Soft RAID issue (a result of online kernel upgrade?)

Hi I have a SuSE 8.2 server with two 40GB drives in a RAID1 config and everything has been working ok until now. It is set up with persistent superblocks and the partition type to 0xFD as instructed in the how-to. On it reside two partitions; boot and root. I did not think of saving the partition table data... Some time ago I heard alarming sounds from the server and swapped one of the drives (secondary) with a new one. After this the sounds disappeared and the rebuild went well (as verification showed). Now it seems that the primary drive is broken and the system won't boot no matter what. I am using the SuSE YaST online update function regularly, but now I wonder if the recent kernel update didn't in fact screw up my lilo.conf. At least, the update procedure asked me to issue /sbin/lilo after the update, which I did, but thought no more of it. Could it be that I hereby lost my persistent superblock setting or something even worse? Anybody aware of similar issues? I must now make my non-broken secondary drive bootable and this includes finding the partitions again... Partition Magic 7 reports an error saying something about non-existing or faulty partition data. Being a newbie in this field I must ask for advice on what to do. That's a great resource. One last question...if I'm doing an FTP install of SUSE will I be installing the latest version of packages (such as Gnome 2.4 vs. 2.2) from the FTP directory. If not, is it better then to do a minimal install and then apt-get these vs. installing older versions over FTP and then upgrading them? Thanks again.

www.suse.com & www.suse.de are unreachable from IP connection. www.suse.com points to Turing.suse.de so the connection to suse.de is up. Anyone else able to hit via the web ? Thanks

There was another thread about a dual boot system where the user moved his original C drive and experienced chainloader errors when loading Windows off of it, but as I recall you never mentioned why your Windows partition needed to be reinstalled (except that the problem occurred after multiple installs of linux to drive hda, and that booting Windows from grub gave you chainloader errors). Have you ever decided what exactly caused your windows installation to break? (Not that any reason I can imagine at the moment would change the procedure you outlined above.)

Configuring a syslog server

Hi all, I've set up syslog on my gateway to forward all messages to a server and rotate its own logs out on a daily basis. So far so good, the server is logging for the gateway with no problem. That said, I'd like to filter off the forwarded messages to a separate file, say /var/log/ gateway.messages but I can see no options in syslog.conf (and the docs) to accomplish this. Is it possible?
