Bad blocks on a ReiserFS volume. How to retrieve files?

I have a large hard-disk (120 GB) on which some blocks went bad. Now, it cannot be mounted. Attached is what debugreiserfs says. What can I do; I'm newbie to reiserfs architecture. I thought that ReiserFS keeps copies of the superblock or something, like ext2/3 does. reiserfsck says "error occured looks like hardware problem. bread cannot read block 13271040". That's the actual number it displays. PS I have asked the same question on the reiserfs-list, but it's extremely low traffic. Maybe someone here knows more. [SLE] RealPlayer G2 on SuSe 6.2

Yesterday, I finally got sound going on my Linux setup. I downloaded RealPlayer G2 and it worked beautifully. Today, RealPlayer run but no sound coming out. All other sound functions still work. I can still play my CD, have system sound BUT no sound when I run RealPlayer. /var/log/message said kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? but KDE sound still work. I have re-installed RealPlayer 3 times now, still no sound when I run the RealPlayer. Any help is appreciated. Adding fonts?

Hi all, Reading some mails on the GIMP mail list, I ran across the procedure to install some more fonts for not only Gimp, but the system and StarOffice to use also. Well, I installed the fonts, went to the shell and issued the command xset fp+ <font directory> and then the rehash command and all fonts are there! Ok, that went well, but each time I restart the system, I have to do it all over again? print from K-Mail run together

I don't remember seeing this problem on the list. KMail print on screen is clear and most letters are separated. When I print out a mail, some letters, particularly the "t", the "si" and the "sk" combinations are scrunched together with adjoining letters. I am printing to an HP 2200D laserjet. The typeface on screen (and on paper) is a sans-serif font. Even on screen, it is slightly scrunched in spots. "ri" and "ti" and "tt" and "th" are too close together. Suggestions? TNX--doug

While attempting to stop a video playing on Macro Media Flash Player 7, I managed to lock out everything. I could not move the mouse cursor, the arrow keys and the rest of the kb didn't work, ctl-alt-del did nothing. None of the function keys did anything. (The video was something downloaded from the 'net via Firefox.) I wound up pulling the big switch, as us hams like to say. Is there anything else I could have done? I'm trying to put Linux to practical use, and this is the first time I've seen 10.0 crash, so it's good, but not fool-proof. (If something can be broken, this fool will break it!)

SCSI RAID recovery

I have a fileserver running SuSE 8.0 with 2 IDE Drives and a SCSI RAID (RAID5). The system boots up to one of the IDE drives, and the SCSI RAID drive runs as a mounted filesystem (/dev/md0). (all filesystems are REISERFS). Problem: The SCSI RAID drive has crashed (won't boot up), and I need to recover it (repair it, through some utility). Further: The software does not seem to want to mount the disks, even though the SCSI BIOS (Adaptec) recognizes the disks, and they are listed as OPTIMAL. I tried to repair the disk(s) (with reiserfsck), but it produced an error message: reiserfs_open: bread failed reading block 2 reiserfs_open: bread failed reading block 16 reiserfs_open: neither new nor old reiserfs form found on /dev/md0 The literature suggested that this error message is hardware related (either a disk is physically damaged, or maybe the RAID isn't recognized), but again, the disks are recognized (and therefore, so is the SCSI Card). I tried to boot up with SuSE CD 1 in Recovery mode, but not sure what to do there (i.e., after the root prompt - just run reiserfsck?). Literature suggests there are plenty of tools to handle disk recovery, and especially RAID support, I can't find reference to them anywhere. The installation of the RAID was trivial (using the YAST2 partitioning GUI window on startup), and yet recovery seems to be a mystery. This can't be right. Does anyone know where there are "decent" and "usable" recovery tools? OR ... does anyone know what "specifically" to do in this case? Can I re-partition without formatting, and recover the existing data? Any help is appreciated - I'm sure I'm missing something "obvious", but can't find "obviously" what to do in the literature, docs, etc. Thank you. Or we can use ntpdate - a program which is to disappear some time in the future, but that I use, and SuSE uses as well in its own script. For this, we can simply call "/etc/init.d/xntpd ntptimeset" - and assume that when "ntpdate" finally disappears SuSE will adjust the script appropriately ;-) Of course, /etc/ntp.conf has to be configured; at least, it must have a list of servers: server IP_address server name_address This is sufficient for "xntpd ntptimeset" to work; just leave the rest of the config at the default values. If you want to use the daemon, then I'm not the person to ask :-) Ok, so when is the appropriate time to make this time adjust? Well, ideally, during system boot-up, after network connection is established. This is done properly by the service xntpd, if enabled. The SuSE script "/etc/init.d/xntpd start" does first a clock set using ntpdate, if the variable XNTPD_INITIAL_NTPDATE is set to "AUTO". Then, it starts the daemon to keep time synchronized. And, if our network connection is not permanent? Then, the script "/etc/ppp/poll.tcpip", which is called from "/etc/ppp/ip-up", will adjust the clock first thing: assuming we have some servers configured, it will be done every time we connect to internet with the modem. I do it differently, only once every five times, and I also update the hwclock. The danger of this method is that the clock might suddenly go forward or backward a bit (seconds or hours, it depends): not very nice on a *nix system, but we can not avoid it. More details to be aware of: what happens to the hardware or CMOS clock? Well, the script "/etc/init.d/boot.clock" (read it, it is documented) does this sequence of things (using the command "hwclock") before starting system services: - Create if it doesn't exist, the file "/etc/adjtime" - Adjust hardware clock (CMOS) for known drift during the time the computer has been off; this depends on the previous file to work. - Copy CMOS clock (hardware) to system time (CPU and OS maintained). After this, the system goes fully up, and maybe, the clock is adjusted from the internet or by hand (danger!). But (and this is very different than windows) the CPU maintained clock has to be copied back to the CMOS, because the kernel doesn't do it. SuSE does it in the script "/etc/init.d/halt" that copies system time to hardware time just before power off. Me, I prefer to do it just after I adjust to network time, inside "ip-up.local", like this: /usr/sbin/rcxntpd ntptimeset /sbin/hwclock --systohc More things to be aware of: a common mistake is manually adjusting the system clock from kde control center (for example), and not updating the hwclock at the same time: the drift adjust algorithm of hwclock thinks that the CMOS clock is fast or slow by the same amount you adjusted the clock, and the next boot it will adjust the time by several hours... The solution is to delete "/etc/adjtime" and call "/sbin/hwclock --systohc" just then (documented on the SuSE sdb). Well, this has been enough chatter on my part; let's hope I didn't make many mistakes :-) -- Saludos Carlos Robinson

Hello, I am converting one of our Domino servers fro NT4 to SuSE 8.2. Is there any way to add a secondary IP to the network card? I used to have such a setup for the current NT box and eve tried this config with Mandrake but thi sdoes not seem to be possible with YAST2. Any idea anybody? Thanks Josef Prusa

9.1 unuseably slow

We received a copy of 9.1 today at work and I have installed this on three machines with dissapointing results. The first machine was an IBM Thinkpad R40 with a Centino 1600 CPU. This machine worked fine and the performance was great. The second and third machines were unusable, KDE takes serveral minutes to start, attempting to start YAST for instance will take about a minute for the SU box to appear and then another minute for YAST to load. I get similar results for all applications I have tried, in all instances the system performs like a P100 with very little RAM. The machines that run slowly are both Athlon XP based machines, one being an Athlon XP 2400 with 1GB of DDR RAM on an ECS Elite motherboard. The second machine is an XP2000 with 512MB of PC3200 RAM on a PCChips motherboard. I have applied all the updates with no effect. Any ideas would be appreciated, I've had to switch back to 9.0 as the whole 9.1 experience is unuseable has anybody got any ideas? Good day, Yes there are legal reasons why SuSE cannot have DVD playback of those pesky movies, but what be done? Would it be too expensive for Novell/SuSE to license a codec? Seems like there is a new copyright law in Germany that has made PackMan be more cautious. No one has made a player for Linux that is 100% legal, is it due to expense? Matt

Works smooth as silk if I stop Setiathome, but remains unusuable if seti or anything cpu intensive is running. This in itself isn't so bad, except that I didn't have this problem under 8.1 and 8.0, where I had seti runing with nice=1 all the time and OOo was working smoothly. Hi. I use a socalled Clarkconnect server based oh RH9.0. I very often have used the ssh command the a local machine running SuSE 8.2. If I enter ssh 192.168.1.xxx, I receive this: "ssh: connect to 192.168.1.xxx port 22: No route to host." What does this indicate, and what possible services are maybe not running ?. 5-button USB wheel mouse configuration for double click, SuSE 8.2

Hello Two hours of Google and Linux websites and I can't find the answer. My wife has RSI and would like to use one of the buttons on her mouse for doubleclick. Here is how her XF86Config looks: Section "InputDevice" Driver "mouse" Identifier "Mouse[1]" Option "Buttons" "7" Option "Device" "/dev/mouse" Option "Name" "Autodetection" Option "Protocol" "imps/2" Option "Vendor" "Sysp" Option "ZAxisMapping" "6 7" EndSection After running xmodmap -e "pointer = 3 2 1 6 7 4 5" ! note left-hand mouse Everything works OK except that the side buttons behave as buttons 1 and 2 (as reported by xev). Just like a three-button wheel mouse. Can the side buttons be differentiated? Is it possible to assign a doubleclick to one of them? Is it possible to assign a drag lock to the other one? Hi all, I got fixed IP for my ADSL since last week. But now I am getting lots of martian messages sort of: martian source xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx from 127.0.0.1, on dev ppp0, where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is my public IP, the IP address in the interface ppp0. I got an ADSL/Ethernet modem in ppp0 with the public fixed IP xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx connected to my host by means of eth0 0.0.0.1/255.255.255.0 Also I have another ethernet interface eth1 192.168.0.254/255.255.255.0 to connect to my internal home network. Hi everybody.... I am using KDE 3.0.x not yet 3.1 and SuSE Linux 8.1 . I have written a web enabling database application with PHP4. The users use the application with internet browser mozilla. My boss said that his sellers may only use the internet browser for the database application. So how can I lock everything in KDE 3.0.x ? I want after the user login, the mozilla will be automatically launched. I also want if they close the mozilla than the user will be automatically kicked out (log out). Is it possible with KDE 3.0.x? HELP!!! Please save me from my stupidity! My modem no longer works in linux at all! If your suggestions help me, then I won't have go into the long gory details. Because I'm working from that dark place called windoze, right now, because I'm sick, and also working on a couple hours of sleep, I've had to write this e-mail 3 times already. It keeps getting shorter each time. I was running some tests on the init strings. I do not have a functioning kppp at present, and therefore can't use its' terminal program. I also don't have any other terminal program to directly send commands to the modem from the keyboard. Sooo... To run these tests I have been editing a -new- copy of wvdial.conf and running wvdial from the shell. Long story really short... Here's what I think is going on. I am now getting errors from the output of wvdial (using the tried and true -saved- copy of wvdial.conf). I am told that there are errors with the name servers and www.suse.de can't be found!?! So now I can't use wvdial or kinternet to connect. I swear I didn't program the wrong init string in the modem, because I am able to get it to work in windoze. I went exploring in yast, but I aborted all areas that I was clueless about. Well, apparently not all!!! PLEASE Save Me!!! Bernd

Black screen after NVidia update - 2nd posting

(remains black) !!!! - I solved this by running SaX2 (in Safe Mode) : set Monitor model = LCD 1024 x 768 @ 60 Hz set Color & Resolution = 1024 x 768 - 24 bit After this I had my display back, but no 3D !!!! Looking in XF86Config shows that Driver is set back to “nv” (apparently by SAX2). So .... it seems that setting the driver to "nvidia" ruins my system ? Or , in other words, I think the new NVidia driver is not working correct here. BTW, I'm using a laptop with a 1024x768 LCD screen. What could be the problem ? Hi all, I need to find out why my pppd daemon is dying when the modem is doing its handshaking ritual. I would like to look in the logs but I do not know where to look other than /var/log. Any ideas why the pppd is dying? Raid 0 speed question

Hi all, For those who have lots of experience with this: I need more hard drive space and a faster disc too. Assuming software based raid is reliable enough for a home user, and money is very tight, I have two options: 1. Buy a new fast disc 2. Use kernel software raid to mirror the current Western Digital Caviar 5400rpm 2mb cache 10gb drive with a 10gb partition on a new (but now very cheap) 5400rpm 40gb drive. The remaining 30gb on the new disc would be /home Which setup would be faster? Thanks Hans

Realplay and Flash plugin problem

Running SuSE 8.2 on an Athlon 1.3GHz Thunderbird, I reproducibly find that the browser plug-ins for Realplayer and Flash don't work in Mozilla. This happens with all versions of Mozilla, including the version included on the SuSE CDs (1.2.1 I believe), the current version 1.4 and the 1.5 beta from the mozilla.org page, and the 1.4 RPM from usr-local-bin.org. Realplayer: I've copied the rpnp.so and raclass.zip files as requested. Although the stand-alone Realplayer works fine when started from the shell by typing "realplay", the plug-in doesn't seem to work. The pop-up window with the Realplayer interface appears, then the program just stops responding, causing Mozilla to "hang". With the RPM version from usr-local-bin, I still seem to be able to close Mozilla by closing the konsole from which I've started the program; with the other versions, there seems to be no way to close the Mozilla window at all. Flash: Again, the plug-ins are installed as per Mozilla's instructions. When visiting a site with Flash content (e.g. macromedia.com) Mozilla just crashes and exits with a segfault. This happens both with the Flash plug-in on the SuSE CDs and with the version downloaded from macromedia.com. Does anyone know what this behaviour means, and how to remedy it? Horrific spam/virus - fetchmail?

I've been getting more and more each day of this latest virus, each with a bonus attachement of about 140k. So far, 48 today - this is a mess on a 56k dial-up... I have fetchmail getting my mail from five different pop accounts. Is there a way to tell fetchmail to delete anything with exe attachments from the server without downloading them? Or another commandline tool that would do that? Something I can have in a script that would run before fetchmail? Deleting them from the servers manually (there is a webinterface, or using something like kshowmail), is not really an option - too much mail coming in per day, and this would (so far, thankfully) actually take more time online while the meter's running... Help with combo drive and K3b

Cry for help here. Just upgraded to K3b 0.9 and I am unable to see my LG 4480B CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive. I ran the K3b config as root and it did detect my drive as a writer. Also added my self to the users list but when logged in as myself k3b does not recognize the drive (as a RW). How to restore shipping kernel and modules

OK I screwed up in an attempt to "optimize" a self-compiled kernel using Suse 8.2 pro. All works fine except hotplug fails to start. At this point I just don't have the time to learn how to diagnose and fix this. Sadly, before the recompilation I lacked the brains to backup the shipping 2.2.40-4GB modules. I have the original kernel. How do I restore the shipping modules into /lib/modules? TIA, Bernd

SuSE 8.2: proper firewall configuration?

I'm using SuSE 8.2, which I've just reinstalled after repartitioning my hard drive, and while I'm busily re-downloading updates and re-installing programs, I've realized that I don't really know if the firewall checkbox I chose when I was setting up my dialup connection is doing anything. Does 8.2 automatically set the firewall up right, or do I have to tweak it? If the latter, can anyone hold my hand through the process? Also, anybody know a good page for testing the firewall? I've used Symantec's security tester on the Windows side of things, but they don't support Linux. Are there any other steps I should take to make sure my box doesn't get hacked? I realize that just by using Linux I've taken the biggest step, but it'd be embarrassing to fall victim to something I could have stopped with a click or a few command lines...

XConfig in different distributions

cdrecord ignores speed=#...

Good day, cdrecord version 2.0, under SuSE Linux 8.2 Pro. I want to burn a CD-RW with 1X. No matter what speed I set, cdrecord ignores it and burns with approximately 4X (which is the media's burning ability according to its ATIP). Before the burn starts, cdrecord always says that it will burn at 2X, but the actual burning is always done with 4X I have tried to set the speed to 0, 1 and 2 to no avail. The environment variable CDR_SPEED is empty, and there is no settings file for cdrecord on the system. So there should not be any settings overruling my command ilne. It makes no difference if I burn as root or as a normal user. Under SuSE 8.1 cdrecord always honored my speed requests, with this very drive and with the same media. I have not found any usable solutions on the great internet. Has anyone got any ideas as to what might be wrong? Best regards :o) Johnny :o)

Appearance of Qt apps messed up by gnome-settings-daemon

Hi, the fonts in gtk2 apps (menus, dialogs, etc.) appear small and hardly readable, unless I have gnome-settings-daemon running. But... menus and dialogs etc. in Qt apps appear extremely large then. If I go to K Control Center > Appearance > Fonts and adjust the menu of, say, Opera to normal, then the menu fonts of Konsole are way too small. Setting this to normal make other menu fonts appear very large. Button text and dialogs in Opera are way too big and can't be changed. These are just a few examples. In short, gnome-setting-daemon messes up the appearance of Qt apps. I ended up _not_ using gnome-settings-daemon any more, and avoiding gtk2 apps wherever possible. The big unsolved mystery is: why do the gnome2 settings affect Qt??? Can it be switched off? S.H.

[SLE] problems with SBC DSL Internet

I'm a linux newbie, and I've just signed up for SBC DSL Internet Access, and I'm having a world of trouble getting it to work with Linux. After speaking with the tech support idiots (they told me Linux doesn't support DSL), I've spent quite a bit of time trolling the internet for answers. I'm running Suse 8.2, I have a Speedstream DSL modem that SBC gave me, connected via Ethernet. I installed Roaring Penguin's RP-PPPOE but it still won't recognize the modem and the connection won't work. Does anyone use SBC or a similar service that can help me out getting it up and running? It already works on my windows computer, so I don't need to sign up with them, just get linux to recognize the connection. Also, as far as the Ethernet settings, should DHCP be turned on for this, or should I use a static IP address? Thanks, Casey Petersen

apt-get through http proxy, anybody?

Hi list users! I followed the discussion on apt, and decided to give it a try using it. OK, I installed everything including synaptic, but I definitely have problem with proxy settings. I can not make apt-get nor synaptic work through an http proxy. I managed to make it with other programs (like wget, fou4s etc) but it doesn't work with apt and synaptic. When I try "update", it simply fail to connect to servers from sources.list file. I tried to search through apt users list, but no results while searching for "proxy" there. Or, I may be blind for something obvious here. Even though this might be a little OT for this list, I decided to ask SLE users for any advice for this problem. I was bumping around this enigmail thing and created a key. But I don't think I'm able to use it right now. Do I have to upload this to some public server or something? What I really wanted to be able to do is create signed email first and then look into doing encrypted email. But for encription is a public server really necessary? I thought I could just ship the recipient the public key.

No i changed the Network Services a little through root account and i cannot send email either. Do you know what is going on? Last Sunday I tried with knowers to install Debian Woody with a 2.4 kernel: impossible to install the network and PCMCIA interfaces because Woody Debian did not have xircom_tulip_cb kernel module. No problem to initiate internet connection with Knoppix (how I found the needed kernel module). This morning I wanted to install SuSE-8.2 on the same Laptop (already did it on a box with 2000Gb Athlon-AMD): problems, problems, problems much alike the one I had with Woody Debian. At first reboot: It get stucked when trying to start the kernel pcmcia (solved when removing the cardbus) Impossible to mount an usb mass-storage device: everything get stucked when I type "mount /media/sda1", no messages, it get stucked Windows-like -> hard shutdown. Sometimes at boot I have "resource manager failed". eth-pcmcia is OK activating usb-devices: OK I only managed to boot the installed system by launching it from nr 1 install CDRom. URGENTLY NEED HELP - Postfix and spam

I've just noticed in the last two days something has gone horribly wrong with Postfix on SuSE 8.1. My machine has got a massive queue of emails that it is attempting to send to AOL customers that I never sent myself. AOL is refusing connections, so these emails are sitting in the queue. I've just quickly done a few mail relay tests and all passed. Now I'm not sure if it is due to the Spammer being on the same ISP as myself or due to some other problem with Postfix. I had configured it to "Soft Bounce" emails as I've been testing a few things. How can I remove all these emails from the queue, as it is sending hundreds of requests to AOLs mail servers, and this is probably not a good idea. Thanks Adam

Eterm or xterm with wrong keymap!

Hi all, I realize my keymap is wrong when in Eterm or xterm. So I did some research and found /etc/init.d/kbd. This script uses files keyboard and console from under /etc/sysconfig to set the following variables: KEYTABLE="be-latin1.map.gz" CONSOLE_FONT="lat9w-16.psfu" It then loads things using "loadkeys" and "setfont" but this only sets thins for /dev/tty* i.o.w. the consoles behind Ctrl+Alt+F1, F2, ... There the keys map correctly. When in X windows, a terminal is associated with a pseudo terminal (/dev/pts/[0-9]*) and there the maping sucks. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks, Guy.

Holding Linux back in pieces

However there are glaring holes in some things, that aren't necessarily Linux' or any of the distros fault per se. One thing is scanner support. Ironically Mac OSX is have this issue as well. I have to fairly nice scanners. One is an HP 4470c and the other is a Umax 4000U. Neither of these are support by Linux, or moreover, are not support "for" Linux by particular venders OEMs. I the case of both of these devices the manufacturer won't cooperate with the devs at the sane project and release any info so they can build a driver/s. I have been googling the hell out of this subject and this is why I've come to the conclusion that the devs have to Backwards engineer these devices and are still fight with them. in the case of the HP, it moreover a RealTek issue since the make the chip/components that are used in the HP device. To the devs credit they have tried repeatedly to contact Realtek about this and have gotten the cold shoulder (aka no reply ). Now I think that, since Linus is coming in to its own, that perhaps the Rep for the Linuc companies should be able to convince thosein charge could be persuaded by Linux/Linux distros to be a littlefriendly. But Ii'm not holding my breath. I strongly thing the scanner (as well as other common SOHO/SMB devices) software issues need to be addressed. Perhaps have SuSE exec meet with the company and persuad these OEMs to help out a little. Especially since these products (Umax and HP 4470) are no longer sold by HP. So, what's the big deal for these guys? The devices are no longer sold in the stores - and therefore what difference does it make if the open up the drivers that would just be sitting in the office on a disc. Hi. I have made an upgrade today using Synaptic on my 8.2 system. After I forgot to run the 3 -4 lines, that I cannot remember what is now :-( But after a reboot, I'm receiving the following: kernel (hd0,5) /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda6 vga=0x317 hdd=ide-scsi hddlun=0 splash=silent splash=silent hdc=ide-scsi Error 15: File not found I can do failsafe start up. Upgrade to KDE3.1.4 messed up some fonts

After the upgrade to KDE 3.1.4 on my SuSE 8.2 box some fonts seem to have disappeared. KNode and some text parts on web pages in Konqueror now look jagged and ugly again, just like a typical Linux system 2 years ago. In KWord the list of fonts is still there but some are dead, i.e. if you change a font in a text then nothing happens. Helvetica is gone, Verdana is still there. Does anyone have any clue which config file or setting could be responsible for this? (I really hate this aspect of Linux, with each upgrade entire config files are thrown out and replaced, ugh).

VPN ??

I expect a new DELL DeskTop computer to get here at the lab any moment. It will come with Windows installed by defaul. I was adviced to have a dual- boot system. SInce my home computer is now networked... it should be possible to have a mount point either here at the lab or at home so as I can access the same files from here as well as from home.... hopefully The s/w administrator told me I'll have to install VPN client on my home computer and VPN server on my office computer ...???? I guess VPN is downloadable from some web site and .. how shall I install it ? Does it needs special rights ??? How does it work ? Would a CVS system be the best choice instead ??? Ideally I'd like to launch NEDIT from home to edit a file residing on the lab computer disk and lauch GVD to debug a program being run at the lab while at home and viceversa ... Is VPN giving me all these options ???? May I start installing VPN on my home computer tonight or shall I wait for having VPN server here at the lab ? Thank you to anyone who helps. Maura

Ximian XD2 bad; Konqueror now messed up

I tried to look at the Ximian XD2 desktop by installing on system. After logging to gnome and then deciding to log back to KDE, I found that Ximian Gnome had altered my KDE desktop. According to this list's archives this is because Ximian takes certain of the KDE desktop items and saves them in "old desktop". The Ximian "doorman" asks if you want your old desktop saved, but since I was logging in to gnome I expected Ximian to save my old gnome desktop not alter my KDE desktop. Not very funny because the icon cannot be opened normally in KDE since Konqueror does not work. Konqueror seriously does not work. Using Konsole to enter "konqueror" or "kfmclient openProfile filemanagement" also does not work (no error message, just seems to hang). Fortunately going to the SuSE menu/system/...superuser filemanager still works, so that the Ximian "old desktop" can be opened and the original icons for KDE returned to the desktop. Except that Konqueror and its variants still do not work. None of: Home directory Konqueror web browser windows directory share directory floppy cdr dvd The only way to see files in KDE is to use Konsole to call nautilus. BAD Ximian. The list archives suggest that adjusting the gnome settings to turn off the nautilus option of "show desktop" would solve the problem. This was the setting and it was reset and still no konqueror and way too much nautilus. If I log in to xfce or windowmaker, then konqueror or "kfmclient openProfile filemanager" work perfectly with all my original settings saved. However if I create a new user and then try to login to KDE, konqueror and its variants are still non-functional. I can function quite happily in xfce4, but I want to put Ximian gnome in its place and away from my KDE. Can anyone suggest how to recover konqueror for KDE? Acrobat could not open 'firewall2-a4-0-9.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been corrupted (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded). URGENTLY NEED HELP - Postfix relay

I've just noticed in the last two days something has gone horribly wrong with Postfix on SuSE 8.1. My machine has got a massive queue of emails that it is attempting tosend to AOL customers that I never sent myself. AOL is refusing connections, so these emails are sitting in the queue. I've just quickly done a few mail relay tests and all passed.Now I'm not sure if it is due to the Spammer being on the same ISP as myself or due to some other problem with Postfix. I had configured it to "Soft Bounce" emails as I've been testing a fewthings.How can I remove all these emails from the queue, as it is sending hundreds of requests to AOLs mail servers, and this is probably not agood idea. Keeping Yast2 current with manual installs

I just performed a manual install of Mozilla Firebird .061 onto my 8.2 Pro box, first uninstalling the 1.02 package that was present on the system. Since Firebird was installed not from an RPM but simply extracted into a dir manually, I'm wondering if is it possible to have Yast2 recognize it in its installed list for future upgrades and consistency? Although "ifconfig -a" shows me correct information as I am expcting from my network card, "route -n" disappoints me with gateway IP being shown as 0.0.0.0 while the network IP is alright. -from an older mail Check your IP address "ifconfig eth0". This list is really great. Yesterday I wanted to setup Samba on a SuSE 8.0 installation. The problem was that I had to connect an external SCSI CD drive in order to install from the SuSE 8.0 CDs. I needed to rescan the SCSI bus without restarting the PC and I remembered seeing that subject some time ago in this list. I checked my folder of saved messages and found "[SLE] Rescanning SCSi bus withoutr rebooting" from 12-04-2000. At the time I didn't have any need for that but thought it looked useful so I saved it. enabling/disabling core dumps

Hi, I want to enable core dumping on a process so I can do post mortem debugging. This is a server process fired up by inittab which changes its owner from root down to the the correct owner. Since it doesn't run via the shell - in fact the shell never runs at all on this account, how do I turn core dumping on? (Come that how do I turn it off when I've finished as well!) OK, given that so many people seem to be having problems with using the new Gaim because of the linking against libnss3.so, I'm doing updated packages that are statically linked. The packages will be slightly larger, but you won't have to worry about whether you have Mozilla or not, or if ld.so.conf is set up right. SuSe 8.2 and NVidia Geforce FX5600

Hi folks, Let me introduce myself, my name is Bruce and I'm new here and came looking for help. For days I seek a solution to a problem with my new vid card, a MSI Geforce FX5600. I changed my vid card and my mobo (to a VIA KT400 based one) and reinstalled SuSE 8.2 (my preferred Linux box). Everything in instalation went fine, I setup the system and get going. The 'nv' default driver was selected was yes, all went sooo fine. Until I decided to enable 3D acceleration. I need it. I work with openGL so without 3D accel, the OS has no meaning to me. Downloaded last Nvidia drivers 44.96 and went to runlevel 3, ran the installer and okay, every thing went fine again! Edited the XF86config file and switched from 'nv' to 'nvidia'. I thought: "SuSE is great! All the installations procedures went so easy, how it could be that still have people who says that Linux sucks, that Linux is hard, blabalbal". I was convinced myself that everything in life is easy when you are using a great Operating System. I was wrong. My hell just started. I wrote 'startx' at the console, relaxed at my confortable chair, put my hands at my head and waited. Waited a looong time. Ooops I forgot to press ENTER =) Just kidding...the screen was black with a little garbage at the bottom. I thought "W ell, it must be configuring himself lets wait more" and I'm just waiting till today (it has been 5 days) =) I tried to update the kernel with YOU (to 2.4.20-100) and nope. Tried to put NVAGP option set to zero in device section of XF86config. Nope. Tried to downgrade driver to 44.63 version. Nope. Played with all the options of Sax2. Nope. Tried to enabled 3D with Sax2 and manually. Nope. Tried to go to some exorcism sessions and nope too =) What could be wrong? Does SuSE doesn't support FX family at all? Does SuSE linux lacks support to new VIA KT400 chipset? Or it is Nvidia's fault? Or it is me that is a jerky and don't know to to do a simple 'new vid card setup' ? =) The odd thing with Sax2 was that he detected my vid card as a 'unknow 0x0312' graphics card. Searching the web I found that 0x0312 id the hardware id for FX5600 cards...but why does he has the Geforce FX5800 in his list and mine that is a step later he does not? Why? the best thing I got was to see Nvidias logo when I forced Sax2 to configure the system as it has a FX5800. The system crashed one moment later. Resuming: System boots fine, I see SuSE logo and progress bar. X seems to start loading, but screen goes black and system hangs. If I boot at runlevel 3, everything is fine. If I use nv default driver, yes it rocks! No 3D accel tough. Maybe I can upgrade to latest kernel? Is there a rpm with 2.4.22 kernel for SuSE 8.2? If so where do I find it (already searched at google, I promise) =) It is worth upgrading to 2.6 version? If so how do I do it? (never upgraded a kernel other way than from rpms) Any other suggestions? Thansk for your time...hope the mail was sufficient funny for you to read it all! =)

(SLE) 8 and rsync issues

Apologies if this has been discussed before but I have only just subscribed. Problem : Run half hourly ryncs (Version 2.5.5) from one SLES8 host to another. Unfortunately about one out of every ten ryncs fail immediately with the following :- > rsync error: partial transfer (code 23) at main.c(578) > rsync of directory lonshsfappb1.uk.db.com:/data failed There are no sym links in the /data file system and network connectivity between the two nodes has not been problematic. If > so, it may not be in the db. I've checked nVidia doc that comes with the latest driver set. 0x0312 definitely identifies a Geforce FX 5600. A Geforce FX 5800 is identified by 0x0302. So this is somewhat strange. And I can imagine this goes wrong. The nVidia driver detects the card by looking at this PCI id, and the driver *thinks* it deals with a 5600 iso a 5800. Could you provide the log file (/var/log/XFree86.0.log) so that we can have a look? Regards Harry

The solution. Download 1210 PPD file from this web page: http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=HP-PSC_1210 Copy the PPD file to /usr/share/cups/model/HP. Install printer as typically would using Yast. PSC 1210 is now a driver choice offered under HP. I'm with verizon "business" dsl. I've been having a problem lately with my firewall getting hammered by someone, or some people, on verizon. It almost appears that I'm getting a denial of service attack, but I think it's just somone sniffing...a lot. It isn't a great script as it isn't what I do, but I had a bash, or a perl, at it in this case, and it worked, learned something new. No doubt someone will improve it, probably to a one liner, but it worked for me. It will print out a list of IP addresses with the number of probes from that address. I did a reverse dns and a port scan against the worst one, found that some where running web sites which had a contact address on it. Wrote to them, but have had nothing back, except more probes. problems with external firewire drives

Hi- It's been a while since I've posted here as things have been working fine. except, now I've running into hardware problems. I'm a software guy, this stuff is just supposed to work! :-D OK, I have 2 external 120gb firewire drives and a Lexar firewire CF card reader attached to my firewire card on my SuSE 8.0 box. 2.4.18-64GB-SMP One of the drives says it's mounted, but only shows being 500megs and nothing is there. fdisk -l shows the full 120gigs. I've tried to umount the disk, but mount complains that the 'device is busy'. fuser shows that the kernel is accessing it. The other drive returns with the following error when I try to mount it: "mount: Not a directory". Now I've dug around for this error and nothing I found really suited me. The lexar CF card reader is fine! I'm including the output from df, fdisk, and catting /proc/partitions. I've also included the output from hwinfo --pci for the firewire card. Suse 8.2 kernel compile problems

With Suse 7.2 I compiled kernels many time with no problem With Suse 8.2 every attempt has been a disaster, luckily I have a 2nd install on a removeable hard disk for tinkering, dabbling and learning... I've followed the Admin guide instructions to the letter, but no luck. One question: in 7.2 the "make bzlilo" seems to do more than rename the kernel to .old and copy the map file, is that an area I should look at? I am using GRUB. The latest attempt resulted in: Kernel panic:VFS:unable to mount root fs on 03:43 I compiled the reiserfs support into the kernel, not as a module. (but I have tried modules as well) so what am I doing wrong? Thanks, Charles

Mozilla has lousy font rendering.

Hi, I'm running SuSE 8.2 w/ KDE. I like using the Mozilla browser, downloaded v 1.4, but Mozilla is doing a lousy job of rendering any fonts. The fonts show up very jagged and thin. Konqueror and the other KDE applications do fine. Is this a Mozilla problem? Can it be fixed? Thanks, Patrick

I have suse 8.2... I configure samba server, and i can access to windows's pc , but they can't see my samba server in network neighborhood.... why?? I configure samba in Mandrake, redhat, debian and slackware and works OK! , but in suse no.... =( note: I use swat for configure samba server note2: sorry, my english is very bad, i'm chilean.. =)

multiple hd's on 1 nfs share

Ok... how do I get multiple harddrives to show up as a single nfs share. I can do it using symlinks with samba but nfs doesn't follow them since it tries to resolve them locally. So... How could I go about doing it. Add hp 1210 to printers list

I want to install an HP PSC 1210 printer, but it doesn't appear on the list of HP printers in Yast. The 1200 series is a supported driver. I tried installing the hp-officejet package from the CD, but still no driver shows up. How do I get Yast to add the 1210 to the list so I can pick it during install? How do I install the HP PSC 1210? SuSE 8.2 - Can't get internet access

Dear All I am new to Linux and am having a problem configuring SuSE 8.2 Pro to access the internet. 8.2 is set up on a 40GB HD with WinXP set up on second 120GB HD. Access to the web is networked via a second machine with Linux Smoothwall 1.0 firewall and ADSL modem. Access is fine under WinXP. 8.2 has clearly identified Eth0 and this I have configured for DHCP in YAST2. However, when booting into Linux it fails to establish the network connection. This is obviously stopping me from getting on with Linux as I would like and look forward to any help that you can provide. Regards Humvee

Hello, I'd like to design simple audio and video playback routines. I've a digital signal acquired through an A/D that I'd like to play as sound. Also I'd like to draw the signal on a window that can be streamed through a video card with TV output. If there is anybody here, working on audio or video programming, I'd like to know if you have suggestions on how to get started.
