I'm having a strange problem with my NIC

I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem with their nic. My old nic wasn't up to speed and I wanted a newer and faster nic. So I went down to CompUSA and bought a new nic. It was a nice new nic, slightly larger and heavier than my old nic. I got it home and hooked it up and it took hold right away. No problems with getting it up and running. (note: I can't have fun with this anymore because I need to actually describe the problem). The card is an SMC 9452TX 10-100-1000MB card that came with Linux drivers. I first launched kde and it worked and configured fine, so I didn't install the drivers. I then logged out of kde and into gnome. The card didn't work. No internet connection, no pinging to my cable router, nothing, but my router light was on letting me know I had a connection. I then used some expletives and logged out and back into kde. Nothing. It still didn't work. So I rebooted. I logged into kde and it was fine. Logged into gnome, nothing. Rebooted into gnome...it worked! Logged into kde...nothing. Back into gnome, nothing. Rebooted into kde...it worked; logged and back into kde....nothing. I'm stuck now. I tried mii-tool and even when it worked, it wouldn't pick it up. I ran ifconfig and route -n and everything was fine when it worked. Didn't try it with it not working. Anyone have any thoughts on this?? The first burn session after that went all-right, with immediate mount possibility. So far so good, problem seemed to be gone. But the second and the third session had the same "old" problem again. So the noapic didn't really help. What puzzles me is why it occasionally goes well and frequently goes wrong ! This also was the case before I applied the 'noapic'. I would expect that it either works or it doesn't. By-the-way, under Bill Gates' software (Windows XP) all works fine, so the drive seems to be OK. Finally, I tried a cdrecord run with extended verbose (option -V), but the avalanche of information does not make much sense to me. Any more suggestions ? I'm curious! Ben, I think you mentioned it first, but I would like to hear what others have found after installing the latest KDE 3.1.3 stuff from SuSE's ftp! Did others get theirs from another source and how did it do and what changes/improvements do you see? In SuSE 8.0 professional kdiskfree was included. I was unable to find it in 8.2 Pro. Does any one know where it can be found, either on the DVDs or on SuSE ftp site? TIA, Darrell Cormier

Samba shares invisible to either windows or Linux network

As the subject says my Samba shares are invisible to either windows or Linux network, I can connect to the SuSE machines by typing smb://<ipaddress> in a konqueror window. I've set SAMBA up with WebMin exactly the same way as on my mandrake machines but SuSE machines are not seen in either LinNeighborhood nor Komba2. Any ideas?? Hi all.... I've got my system set up where I can record from my radio. Now I have a small problem that I've not found an answer to yet. When a program comes on the radio it's no problem to be ready to record it. But when I'm just listening to the radio and hear a song (for example) that I want to record it's too late to get it krecord and kmix running. It's either over or I've missed the first 2-3 minutes. What I was thinking about is can I set up a buffer that is say 5 to 15 minutes big and let it run in the background all the time. As it fills up it deletes the oldst, ie first in, first out. Then when I hear something on the radio that I want to keep I can just save the buffer. Anyway is there anyway of doing this? TIA!
