No Sound on ASUS A7V8X-X board + SuSE 9.0

Greetings Several hours looking for info have borne no fruit. Has anyone on this list seen this problem? /var/log/messages yields: kernel: ALSA via82xx.c:704: invalid via82xx_cur_ptr, using last valid pointer kernel: ALSA via82xx.c:520: codec_valid: codec 0 is not valid [0x87e5370] Should I buy a cheapo sound card instead? TIA for any help.

Amavis just won't play along

Hi all, I started by ticking the box to do virus scanning when I set up postfix through Yast2 (SuSE 8.2 Pro). Amavis won't work (figured this out in a previous post), mail doesn't get delivered - disabling vscan in postfix's main.cf enables mail to get delivered. After much googling and reading docs and howtows, I eventualy gave up and tried replacing amavis-posftix with amavisd-postfix. Now I get the following in my log: Dec 1 12:30:33 ncshans amavis[25091]: mail forwarding failed, retry: Failure to connect to local SMTP port: Connection refused at /usr/sbin/amavisd line 1134, <GEN0> line 12. From what I understand, amavisd wants to send the mail pack to postfix on port 10025. I went as far as disabling my firewall, but it still won't connect there. How do I allow this to happen? Is there anything special I need to do to get amavis working? I expected it to work once I finished the Yast2 setup. Thanks Hans

Perc Raid (i.e Dell's Raid) and naming convention

Does anyone know the naming convention for Perc Raid Sets (ie. /dev/???) --- Background I have a windows box with an Perc Raid Controller. The Raid controller has 3 'Containers' built from the attached drives. 2 are fine, one is degraded. (Possibly fatally so). Container 3 has valuable data on it, and is not marked as degraded. The first 2 containers are on SCSI bus 0, the 3rd is on scsi bus 1. I want to duplicate the container 3 filesystem onto a single large ATA drive before I do any serious maintenance to the box. I booted the SuSE 8.2 CD into rescue mode and tried dd if=/dev/sda1 dd if=/dev/sdb1 They seem to be working, but getting only the containers I don't care about. (i.e The disk activity lights are not blinking for the disks I care about.) Unfortunately dd if=/dev/sdc1 is not working, and I'm not sure what else to try. Thanks Greg -- Greg Freemyer

I just checked out your site www.usr-local-bin.org and I get the impression that you are a Gnome user of SuSE. I have always been a Gnome user and have favored distros like RedHat, Debian, Slack, and even FreeBSD. But I moved to SuSE when 8.2 first came out and I am addicted. However, I feel that SuSE definitely favors KDE. My question to you is do you exlusively use Gnome with SuSE? How do you find this to be (good and bad)? Because I constantly have the feeling that I am missing something in SuSE by not using KDE. And I feel that if I want to use Gnome I should just switch to RedHat. But my problem is I prefer Gnome-based apps like Evolution, Gaim, Gimp, etc. over their KDE counterparts. It's just that the display configuration is such a pain in the ass to have to run Gnome (GTK) apps in KDE.

HP LaserJet 5M Not Actually Printing ...yet

I took the advice from the list on setting up my HP LJ5M with SuSE 9.0 and it prints a test page just fine from YaST2. But when I try to print from Evolution, it warms up the printer so I know it's getting input but when it's time to print the LED goes right back to "Ready" mode without printing anything ? Any thoughts ? At least the test page looked good :-) Wish I could print something else. I use Textmaker 2002 for Linux and it does the same thing. Dee

ReConnecting NTFS drives to retrieve data

I did "mount -t ntfs /dev/hdh1 /mnt" (as root and without the quotes) and I am now able to see the contents of my NTFS drive but only as root and only in the terminal window. How do I enable this drive to be accessible for all users all the time and be accessible via Konqueror or Nautilus or other file managers? When I installed SuSE 9.0, I use new disks. Now that I have 9.0 up and running, I need to reconnect the 5 Hard Drives I had in my Windows 2000 machine in order to retrieve the files from them. I plan on simply needing them for read access. Some of the files will be moved from the storage drives to my /Documents folder. All of the drives are formatted NTFS. Thanks in advance. -=Thinker

samba printer suse 9.0

Hi, PROBLEM : I'm not able to use the printer connected to a windows 2000 machine. INSTALLATION: I have 3 PCs. - One is a windows 2000 PC with the printer connected to it - One is a redhat machine - One is a Suse 9.0 machine. The redhat machine is able to print to the samba printer, not the Suse one. smbclient -L //secretariat shows identical data on both Linux machines Domain=[TUX-NET] OS=[Windows 5.0] Server=[Windows 2000 LAN Manager] Sharename Type Comment --------- ---- ------- IPC$ IPC Remote IPC D$ Disk Default share print$ Disk Printer Drivers HPLaserJ Printer HP LaserJet 4 ADMIN$ Disk Remote Admin C$ Disk Default share Server Comment --------- ------- SECRETARIAT Workgroup Master --------- ------- TUX-NET SECRETARIAT on the Suse machine this command line prints "ouf" to the printer correctly. >echo -en "\rouf\r\f" | smbclient "//secretariat/HPLaserJ" "tugudu" -c 'print -' -N -U "denis" In other words everything works but I'm not able to create a printer connection with Yast2. When I lookup hosts it gives the IP of the windows machine and never accept the queue name (HPLaserJ) Ideas ? thanks Denis

How to disable IPV6 ?
