hdh is a free 10GB (NTFS) looking for something to do

Hello all, I have now copied all of my data off of the NTFS drive I attached post SuSE 9.0 installation. Now I have a drive that I can do whatever I want with. I already have two drives in the machine. One drive is (hda1 '/home') and the other is split (hdb1 'swap' and hdb2 '/'). I was thinking of formatting this 'newly available' drive and trying to use it to make the machine run a little faster or be more productive, or just have the drive serve as a common point for accessing media files or dropping junk into it as to not clutter up my /home directory. I am not sure exactly what I should do or how I go about doing it so if anyone has any suggestions or ideas, I am all ears. Thanks to everyone that gave advice on mounting the drive when I needed it. Though, I was never able to mount it as a user, I did learn a little more about the system, and I was able to recover all the files from it. -=Thinker

Moving an App to another Virtual Desktop in KDE

Hello, I'm running SuSE 9.0 (professional), using KDE as my desktop. I have 6 virtual desktops set up in KDE, and am having trouble moving applications from one virtual desktop to another. When I right-click on the top-left corner of an open application window (where the little app icon is located), scroll down to the "To Desktop" option, and then click on a different desktop...... nothing happens! The application does not move to the selected desktop. When I go to the KDE taskbar, click on the application's icon, and then choose "To Desktop", the application does move to the selected desktop. It seems as if the first method of moving an app (described above) has somehow been disabled. When I used SuSE 8.1, both methods of moving an app to a different virtual desktop worked fine. What's even more strange, is that when I log into KDE as a different user, I can right-click on the top-left corner of an application window, and the "To Desktop" option does not even appear in the context menu! Is there a KDE option to enable / disable this feature? I've checked in the KDE Control Center, but didn't see anything. Thanks very much! Dom

SUSE linux desktop video signal out of range.

Hi, I'm trying out SUSE linux desktop and when I install it the NEC LCD 1850E monitor say video signal out of range, now I have this before with setting up X but this ok's even at the console level any ideas about what I can do about this. thanks, Dave. -- Dr. David Holden. apt4rpm "E: Unable to determine a suitable system type"

On a fresh install of SuSE Pro 9.0 I have installed apt4rpm from suser-rbos Can anyone suggest a fix please? Can't no longer redirect ALL boot info away from tty0 in SuSE 9.0

In SuSE 8.x I redirected boot screen text away from tty1 by using the grub boot option console=/dev/ttys0,115200 This no longer works as expected in 9.0. In /var/log/boot.msg I can see that the serial device is named /dev/ttys00, but redirecting data to this device hchanges nothing. I have also tested it using tty3 as output device, and I can see that the output is NOT redirected to tty3 until after the following lines: Freeing unused memory kernel memory: 333k freed Adding swap: ....... The rest of the output is then on tty3. The first line on tty3 is: INIT: Version 2.82 booting It look as if INIT is accepting the grub command "console=/dev/..." but whatever runs things prior to that, do not. This is different from SuSE 8.x. Any suggestions Thanks in advance.

OT downloading of different files at the same time

Just waiting for the security patches to download. Xfree86 takes quit some time. And with my relatively unstable dialup I do not like to take chances. Is it possible to download two files from different sources at the same time or do I run the chance that e.g. my patch download is interrupted during such a practice? I found out that sending and receiving email does not interrupt the flow that much. Somebody with the necessary insight?

There is a > chapter about > this on the SuSE books. Relocating /opt is a good option to free up space on hdb. However this will not give you any performance boost (per se). Relocating /swap however will not free up much room on hdb, but it will give you a performance boost in paging. If you are looking more along the lines of a performance boost, you may want to look into setting up a RAID array. If you have the ability to setup a RAID 0 striped disk array, then you could look into doing that; a RAID 0 array will give you parallel transfer. This could increase your read and write transfer rates. Of course, this all depends on whether or not your motherboard supports RAID. If your mobo does not support RAID you could purchase a RAID controller card to do so.

Abiword

(Decided to start a new thread since this no longer applies to Gnumeric.) In the previous thread, you (James) said that "It's (abiword) in APT as abiword". All I can find is abiword-clipart, abiword-plugins-impexp, and abiword-plugins-tools. I could not find just abiword. I'm wondering if I'm missing a source. Is abiword in the ulb repository or do I need to get it somewhere else? Don Henson
