Problem starting Quanta after updating to KDE 3.1 using [F2]

Hello A strange thing happened. I use two boxes dayly and both are running fine. So I updated both of them to to run KDE 3.1 (Suse packages from ftp.kde.org). Now, both works fine, but the other of them, for some strage reason, won't let start Quanta using [Alt-F2] and typing "quanta". Instead, I was prompted to type root password in a dialog to install it "yast2 -i quanta". Well, I have Quanta installed in both boxes. The Quanta starts fine in the troublening box, when I start it from Konsole or from an icon on desktop I created. But I really want to start Quanta (and most of apps) using [Alt-F2] and typing two or three letters. Starting any (mayby) other app (KDE app or not) using [Alt-F2] seems to wotk fine. SuSE recommends that you upgrade to 8.0 first. If you don't have a copy of it, then that makes matter more complicated. A clean install is always best, but that can be a pain. It all comes down to how much you customized your install of 7.3. If you only use it for desktop stuff, you might get away with just keeping your /home and /root and replacing everything else, but if your on a network and your box is setup as a file/print or web server then you definatly can't get away with dumping your configuration files. If you could provide more details I'd be more than happy to offer additional suggestions. Things that would be helpful to know: How much Linux experience do you have? How much time do you want to spend on this upgrade? How many people are effected by this machine and how important is it? ... I have a machine at home that has been upgraded from 7.2 -> 7.3 -> 8.0 -> 8.1, and it appears to be working fine. On my personal machine, I decided to do a fresh install at version 8.0, since there was a big change in the /etc layout (e.g. the 'plumbing' changes mentioned earlier). Oh, make sure that you do a FULL SYSTEM BACKUP, before you start the upgrade. This has saved by butt on a number of occasions... believe it or not, most installers just can't cope once you run out of disk space...lol, I'd call myself an experienced computer user, but I've fallen into this several times... Firewall log files

I managed to get broadband working with the BT Voyager modem, and activated the firewall through the menu system. Can someone please tell me where the log files are kept? Thank you, John

The kernel source should be in /usr/src/linux, and the configuration file should be in /usr/src/linux/.config (it may not exist until you run 'make config') You may want to you SuSE's config file to get started, just run: # zcat /proc/config.gz > /usr/src/linux/.config' As far as applying source patches to the kernel and/or upgrading to 2.5 or 2.6 (once it's out)...this could be a pretty big task. While, you certainly can run any kernel that you like, that doesn't mean that you should. You will most likely have to upgrade a number of user-space tools to get a non-2.4.x kernel working. Remember that 2.5.x is a development branch. It might be fun to play with, but is defiantly not recommend for daily use. I'm not sure what you ultimately trying to accomplish here, but unless you are a developer, really like tinkering, or just like fixing stuff that you break, you may want to stay away from development kernels and wait for SuSE (or some other distro company) to provide you with a solid 2.6 kernel. If you are simply trying to upgrade to one of SuSE's kernels, then you don't want the source at all. Hi Fergus, OK ... the KDE update was cool (thanks for that) and yes it looks really smart. A few things bomb out ... nothing major though. Not having so much success with the Kernel. I d/loaded the source RPM which was 2.4.19-115 (currently 2.4.19-74) and ran the program (RPM) which extracted the source (I also d/loaded a patch but I'm not sure what to do with what). I can't find a configure file so I'm a bit confused as to what to do now? It's quite possible I downloaded the wrong kernel (the one I got was source and even the smaller patch one was source). Another question ... I was reading in Linux User that Kernel 2.6 is about to come out and I was wondering, once I figure how to update a kernel, if I am able to use non-SuSE kernels as I presume there must be a 2.5.xx kernel available? Hidden file for FTP install.

Hello world! I have recently copied the whole FTP tree for a NFS install of 8.1. But the hidden file is missing. And i cant find it on the servers i copied from. Whats the name/location/contents of it? Galeon always crashes (8.1)

The help in many gnome programs do not work. Every time I try, I get a Galeon crash (segmentation fault). Is this known? -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

KMail (mis?)behaviour in KDE3.1

Just a question... I've updated my 8.1 install to KDE3.1 and everything is almost working. The new KMail is generally working fine, but I have noticed that with some senders on the SuSE list, I do not get any headers displayed... especially from KMcLauchlan. I see the message, but all header information refuses to display in KMail1.5(?) Anyone else have this oddity? C.

I tried the suggestion to uncheck 'file' in configuring the Previews. That did not work. If I log in as root and start it, it will come up for a short second or two and shutdown with a signal 11 (SIGSEGV). However, I can click on a user folder and File Mgr will come up as non-SU and stay up. two machines, newbie question..

I have two linux boxes at home, both have ext3 filesystem.. I have some fine tunes stored on my lapto as MP3 and sometimes when I'd like to listen to those tunes while working on other computer... how to use those files.. I can access that machine using SSH but I don't feel like copying those files temporarily to my machine... Silmply question is, how to play mp3 that are not on my machine but on a machine across the room, so that the music plays on my machines XMMS. H_ip

SuSE 8.1, PostgreSQL, ODBC & OOo

Have been trying for 5 days now to get PostgreSSQL working with ODBC and OOo. Found some documents on unixodbc.org site and tried several of their configs, had one work one time, then quit. If anyone has SuSE 8.1 connected to PostgreSQL databaase via ODBC, could you please send me you odbc.ini and odbcinst.ini files so I can compare to mine? Thanks Art
