i just upgraded a toshiba laptop that i have run 6.4, 7.1, & 7.2 on,
to 8.1..................(just to see what all the fuss was),
wow! what a change.........install was a chore as this machine won't
boot from cd, i went through a whole pile of floppys before i found a
few good ones to create boot and modules disks.........anyway my
problem is during install, via NFS the pcmcia card worked fine - but
after rebooting, the cards don't seem to be working or the card
services are not starting during boot............the whole sysconfig
thing is new to me and so is this "hotplug" stuff, can anyone explain
how pcmcia card services are supposed to start now? i don't see
anything in yast hardware about pcmcia, i did find and set up the
network card, which BTW, i don't think i should have had to do
proud linux user since kernel 1.1.54
It happens now and then that our SuSE-8.1 server (P4-2.4G, 1G, 160G, G550)
hangs heavily with Caps Lock and Scroll Lock flashing. Does anyone on the
list know what could be the reason for such a behavior? I'm a bit suspicious
about the temperature in the box.
Thanks for your suggestions,
Having this problem on two different machines, both runnig
8.0. A different 7.1 installation has no problem.
Xmms and Grip both do not find any files in /cdrom
with an audio CD in the tray.
Permissions on /cdrom, and the devices pointed to are
identical between the machine where the audio CD is found,
and machines where they are not.
Unfortunately, I can't use the 7.1 machine for the sound
editing work I need to do.

I'm thinking about getting an APC Back-UPS CS 350VA USB to automatically
shutdown my small file/DSL/firewall server (AOpen micro-ATX motherboard,
Cyrix M2-333Mhz, 128MB, 10GB IDE hard drive, SCSI cdrom drive, and no monitor).
Does anyone have any experience with this particular UPS?
Does the stock SuSE 7.3 kernel support a USB UPS or do I have to hack and
patch the kernel to make it work?
Recommend a similar model with serial support for under $100 USD?
I am contemplating swapping my old trusted Sony laptop for a Compaq Tablet
One of the main reason apart from the Tablet concept itself is the use of
the Transmeta chip (remember 'Palladium' ...).
Question: I am dual-booting Windows XP Pro and SuSE 8.1 on my Sony. What
about on the Transmeta-based Compaq Tablet PC. It's OK for Windows Tablet PC
for sure, but Linux??
(I tend to remember that Transmeta and a certain Linus T. were/are kind of
related :-) ...)
What are the SuSE users using as a default email client after the default installation? Is the netscape one still included in the default installation? How is kmail working? are you guys satisfied with it? is there any other alternative included in the default installation?

I set up my SuSE 8.1 system with CUPS printing. I have a local printer
and a network printer (with the network printer as the default.) I then
follow the procedures through YaST to change to the LPRng package. When
I try to print a file to my local printer (called 'black' here), I get
the following message:
sending job 'root@megpc1+694' to black@localhost
connecting to 'localhost', attempt 1
connected to 'localhost'
requesting printer black@localhost
job 'root@localhost+694' transfer to black@localhost failed
error 'ERROR TRANSFERRING DATA'
sending str '^Bblack' to black@localhost
The /log/messages file shows information such as the following.
Jan 29 15:06:06 megpc1 kernel: lp0: using parport0 (polling).
Jan 29 15:06:07 megpc1 lpd: connection refused from unknown
I was actually able to make this changeover successfully on my home
computer (similar computer, but different printer). So there must be
some configuration setting that is different, but I can't find it.
Please help. Thank you.

RPMS for MS fonts are provided via this site:
The developer looks for reports that acknowledge that the rpms work on SuSE.
Perhaps James can compare his packages with the ones provided by the site
