blackbox configure problem

Hi all I've gotten blackbox running and I like it, however I want to install bbsmount so I downloaded the tar.gz file unpacked it and ran ./configure, all went well untill the end where the following configure error messages appeared "configure: error: XOpenDisplay not found in -lX11" does anyone know what this means and how I can fix it?? Thomas

compiling GRIP 3.0.1

I'd like to run the latest grip, because the one that comes with Suse 8.0 doesn't seem to work properly (everytime I rip a CD and insert the next cd, it doesn't update the duration of the tracks, but uses the ones from the first cd) I hope the later version doesn't have this error (or is it only my configuration and no one else has this problem?) Where do I get makeinfo from? 2. Why doesn't it find a gnome-config? I have the gnome desktop installed (even though I'm running KDE) and I believe the gnome libs, too. Actually hand tailoring the permission files went real well, but access.conf isn't affected by chmod or anything... login delay... my favorite suse item... got that it was auto...no help from me... I've got the ut2003 running on a 1Ghz Athlon with 512Megs & Geforce2 MX400. It's not the fastest Nvidia out there, but it is decent enough for my gaming needs. In those files they have nullok all over the place, and null is not ok here but I hesitate to remove... any valid reason why to keep it in there? no usesr without passwords here, but do these files affect any system stuff like mail do you know, or just physical users with /home directories. yea yea I have been reading pam docs for 2 days... but I like to know if someone knows for sure because locking myself out isn't in the schedule... Yast2 passwords md5

I have repeatedly gone into the Yast2 configuration and reset the passwords for up to 20 characters and for MD5. It repeatedly still will not let me enter more than 8 characters in a new password, which is probably a good sign that MD5 is not working either. If I check the config files manually with an editor they don't appear to be changed either. And it's all done through Yast properly, according to its own directions, it even goes through the motions of running suseconfig... Any ideas?

It's not a problem and I already ran pwconv just for the heck of it... there's only one real user, it's a suse test machine. Until I am sure exactly what it's up to in every corner I am not bothering to put anything major in it... Well how do I convert to MD5 and stay there? Even the documentation for Suse 8, I think it's from a previous version, stuff just doesn't always add up. Finding Linux User Number

Hi all, I just realized that I have one of those really early user numbers and I thought it would be fun to see how low it is. What I cannot figure out is where the heck is it! Search google either turns out too many or too few replies, and nothing related to finding the user#. Kmail Address Book Import - Help (Newbie)

In trying to migrate work email from Outlook 2000/Exchange server (MAPI mode) to KMail, the challenge has been to export/import my 1,200+ Contacts. I tried a tool listed at kmail.kde.org called Outlook2Unix. This tool is a 32-bit Windows app that exports many different kinds of Outlook folders; email, contacts, etc. (I just needed Contacts). The tool generated a file called Contacts.kab that the documentation says is in native KMail format, and that I should copy the file to a specific location for KMail to see it. However, KMail doesn't see it, and I can't figure out how to get KMail to import this. Indeed, I can't even figure out where, in what file, etc., KMail actually stores its address book, even after searching the archives on the Kmail mailing list (which doesn't have a lot of activity, BTW) and my own hard disk. boot trouble

Hi all, Are there any owners of NVidia Riva TNT2 32 AGP card? How does it work? I am about to buy one - should I buy this? Are there any known issues of SL-8.0 with this? [X4.2 with this?]. Corrupted LVM, need help

All, I have a LVM based data disk with 3 LVs. My OS disks are _not_ LVM based. We had a lightning storm over the weekend, and an old kernel got booted when the machine was powered back on. Text login problem SuSE v8

I have just started having a text login problem, when I login via the kde v3 login box I can login ok but if I try and login via the text login screen I get password not recognised. Also commands such as ps and top no longer work I get the following error message: /usr/bin/top No such file or directory, and yet if I cd into the directory the programs are there. If I bring up a shell in the KDE 3 desktop and type init 1 I then can login via the text login. Also when I login via the KDE3 desktop I receive the following error messages: Kernel: ulci.c: found UHCI device with no IRQ assigned, modprobe:modprobe: Cant locate module char-major-10-134 Kernel: mtrr: no more MTRRs available modprobe:modprob: Cant locate module char-major-10-134 I am extremely worried because up to now there has been no problem. I have also allowed students to telnet in to do there work maybe I was foolish. sux! thank you Jaska! chgrp that one to wheel! any ideas on how to get access.conf working properly to limit users for remote login on a pretty much default Suse8 setup? so far no luck, uncommented proper line from access.conf... added pam.access.so to /etc/pam.d/login but still not responding... well anyway been reading the pam docs... so far access.conf changes not accepted... have followed all recommendations... doing something wrong, it's my last glitch... all else is pretty much in order. maybe I can get Bastille for this version I actually have not checked that, I have heard of a thing called suse harden, anyone know of it? Being that's a new machine and currently not running any services even locally I assume shutting down sshd which installed by default is safe till it's updated? how can I get a mod that does that nice 10 second delay between failed logins onto my redhat I wonder? Tried just adding it to login.defs on RH and no cigar... anyone know exactly which mod that is? hmm...

I am very frustrated. An associate installed SuSE on a server to which I am remotely ssh'd. I cannot find adequate documentation for yast/yast2 anywhere. In fact, there is *NO* man yast2 !?!? I don't know why this box -- supposedly patched and fully updated by my associate -- is running sshd and openssl through which every script kiddie can skip; but, I also cannot figure out how to upgrade this beast ;< /sbin/yast2 online_update Starting download of patch descriptions from ftp.gwdg.de. Connected error_path Disconnected Can't get patches from server. Please try to get patches from another SuSE ftp server. Some people did recommend that but no I am maintaining original system configuration wherever possible, 'cept for security addons... su root cant start x-applications; connection refused

Hello Susers, I have a little problem. If I start a terminal and then do su to change to root user, and then try to start an application, lets say xmms, then I get the following message ---------------------------- "Xlib: connection to ":0.0 refused by server Xlib: Protocol not supported by server **CRITICAL**: Unable to open display" ----------------------------------- I realize my Xserver must have some kind of restriction on but what,where and how???...anyone know what I need to do? I might add that this doesnt occur if I run KDE only when I run another windowmanager or desktop environment. Thanks Thomas

It'll do ssh but only locally at some point, print drivers, logging for the network, maybe a local webserver to test stuff.. But No remote access, only local user lan access. But the lan contains a switch to the outer world... so need to consider security. Hello Where can we download suse 8.1 all ftp only have 8.0. I know the real (cd + man) will be available on October 7 but what about the FTP Install?? I have to put SuSE on one of our server and dont realy want to redo it when 8.1 come out. Thanks Christian
