[SLE] RealPlayer G2 on SuSe 6.2

Yesterday, I finally got sound going on my Linux setup. I downloaded RealPlayer G2 and it worked beautifully. Today, RealPlayer run but no sound coming out. All other sound functions still work. I can still play my CD, have system sound BUT no sound when I run RealPlayer. /var/log/message said kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? but KDE sound still work. I have re-installed RealPlayer 3 times now, still no sound when I run the RealPlayer. Any help is appreciated. Mount Windows NT(NTFS) drive as drive Z: for all users

Adding fonts?

Hi all, Reading some mails on the GIMP mail list, I ran across the procedure to install some more fonts for not only Gimp, but the system and StarOffice to use also. Well, I installed the fonts, went to the shell and issued the command xset fp+ <font directory> and then the rehash command and all fonts are there! Ok, that went well, but each time I restart the system, I have to do it all over again? DVD playback...

Good day, Yes there are legal reasons why SuSE cannot have DVD playback of those pesky movies, but what be done? Would it be too expensive for Novell/SuSE to license a codec? Seems like there is a new copyright law in Germany that has made PackMan be more cautious. No one has made a player for Linux that is 100% legal, is it due to expense? Matt

I'm reposting this, because I think that it's been pushed down far enough that people aren't seeing it. Basically, I've got my internal wireless card setup as my eth-pcmcia-0 device. Someone said something about how it should be bridged to eth1 and then I can use it. It doesn't seem to be doing that. Can anyone help? Abit ic7-g and suse 8.2 support

Hello fellow Susers. I want to install Suse 8.2 on an Abit IC7-G with an intel 875 chipset.Is the hardware supported by this version of the Suse distro? All the HDD's to be installed along with it are SATA so I presume tehre may be a problem installing them? Previous experience with sata disks in linux had them working very slowly and I could no possibly install the OS on them. Any experiences that a fellow user may have had with this kind of motherboard/chipset would be welcome. Thanks

Is there a open source search engine?

All, I've got a Samba fileserver working pretty well, but it would be nice if I could have a web interface that allowed end-users to search for documents on the fileserver. Sort of like a google interface to the fileserver. The trouble is that a lot of the docs are in word, acrobat, etc. Does anyone know an open source search engine that has converters? I've looked at a couple of commercial search engines that would do the job, but I found the prices shockingly high. Dell 2650/Perc3 Raid Controller easy switch??

I am currently using a Dell 2650 Poweredge server without a raid controller. It's using the standard adaptec onboard SCSI as it stands. I'm wondering if anyone has installed the Perc3 raid controller and had the Linux install just pop right up (assuming the megaraid module was loading)? I wouldn't need to reformat if all I was doing was switching controllers and hardware mirroring, right? Thanks, Rich shado(a)mc.net

A [different] Telnet problem

I have 2 pcs, A and B and a router R. raffic is routed from A to the internet via B acting as a router to R and R routing to an ISDN line. Router R has some capability of operating as a name server on behalf of the internat. If I telnet R from A or B, it immediately opens the ISDN connection, which I don't want, because it costs. Why is this and how can I stop it? More info. B has eth0 and eth1 interfaces, and runs SuSE 8.0. It also does OS/2, in which case everything works perfectly. I think ping causes the same problem on Linux, but again not on OS/2. I am wondering whether Linux sees the connection out and goes sniffing for routing info or Name Server info or some such. If this is the case, I would appreciate knowing what, and how to turn it off. Any help on this appreciated, so I can complete the migration of B to Linux TIA Vince Littler

Can't find audio cd

Having this problem on two different machines, both runnig 8.0. A different 7.1 installation has no problem. Xmms and Grip both do not find any files in /cdrom with an audio CD in the tray. Permissions on /cdrom, and the devices pointed to are identical between the machine where the audio CD is found, and machines where they are not. Unfortunately, I can't use the 7.1 machine for the sound editing work I need to do. Suggestions? TIA. Greetings! I'm thinking about getting an APC Back-UPS CS 350VA USB to automatically shutdown my small file/DSL/firewall server (AOpen micro-ATX motherboard, Cyrix M2-333Mhz, 128MB, 10GB IDE hard drive, SCSI cdrom drive, and no monitor). Does anyone have any experience with this particular UPS? Does the stock SuSE 7.3 kernel support a USB UPS or do I have to hack and patch the kernel to make it work? Recommend a similar model with serial support for under $100 USD? Thanks! Christopher Reimer

Samba Server And Suse 8.0 Setup.

Hello I have basically a suse samba server setup. Eth0 is for the internet connection (cable). Eth1 is my internal network. I use eth1 for my samba server. When i have the shares/ drive letters mapped, whatever, Ill goto access them and that computer will just lockup or timeout for about 1 minute, then it will resume operation normally. I have approx. 5 comptuers on the suse server, and they all do this from windows xp to windows 98se. I am using set up addresses of 192.168.0.x, where is greater than 2. My question is have or is there something Ive setup wrong to cause this pause to occur. ? Its becomming very annoying..and frustrating. Im using kernel 2.4.18-64GB-SMP with a dual processor setup. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. Every package installed is orginal versions from the suse install cdroms. (no updates done). Anything come to mind. btw, ive replaced the switch, with a new netgear one, and all the networks at startech ST100 Realtek 8139 chipsets on 100Tx. Anyone... !

how to mount a vfat filesystem with mod 777 ?

Imagine the following situation: - computer 1 has linux running and there is a vfat partition mounted - computer 1 is running samba on that vfat partition (i.e. the vfat partition is a share of samba) - computer 2 wants to have write acces on the samba share The problem is, that computer 2 has no write acces, because the vfat partition is mounted 755. The samba.conf file is the following: [public] comment = Schreibbares Verzeichnis path=/home/sure/netzwerk/public public=yes readonly=no browseable=yes create mask=777 How can I make the partition mounted as mod 777 ? Near-Line Storage

Hello, everyone. I have recently acquired a new (old) server that came with a Compaq DLT Mini Library. The library has room for 15 tapes, and has a pair of 35/70 DLT drives inside it, along with a bar code reader (which I will probably never use). Having spoken to a Compaq support person, it seems that the drive is a Manatee or Manatee 2, if that helps. A search for this on the Compaq site yields no results, although there is a reference to it on the Arcserve site listing it as a supported device for their products. I am trying to decide which avenue to follow for this device. I would like to either use it as a back-up device or as a near-line storage device. If it could do both simultaneously, that would be awesome, but I think that's unlikely. My question is, does anyone know of any freely available utilities that would help with setting the device up as near-line storage ? I have found a few commercial offerings out on Google, and Freshmeat drew a blank, too. I can't spend a great deal of money on this as it is a home machine. I'd like to use it get our large collection of MPEG and MP3 files off the hard drives and free up some space. Thanks, Stuart.

Does anyone know where you can find a copy of Corel's Wordperfect Office 2000 for Linux? I've been using WP since the dos days. If I can get WP on my Linux box, I can discard my Microsoft 98 partition. If that's a no go, will WP Windows version work on Crossover Office? StarOffice just doesn't have the features I'm looking for.
