SuSE StarOffice 6.0 dist packaging format

How to start Adabas D?

Hi all, Because I was too lazy, I just found the Star Office 6.0 rpms on my new suse office pro disk and installed them, quite painlessly, with rpm -Fvh on my SuSE 7.3 machine. The install includes Adabas D, (only the packaging seems to call it star base, and there doesn't seem to be anywhere in SO's main menus to call it from) in its own separate directory under /opt. Call me a dumb monkey, but I can't figure out how to install it. The install notes imply rather than state that you should run the script 'setup', but for me this segfaults whether run as root or user. I tried poking into the binary directory and found x_install, which ran with apparent success, and I set the various environment variables called for by the install notes. But now I can't figure out for the life of me what binary to call. Am I particularly blind, or is not really supposed to run on 7.3? The rest of so6 appears to run fine. I am about to upgrade this machine to 8.0, but I have a lot of current work to get through before that's a good idea. Someone strike me heavily with the clue stick, please. Best Fergus

QT3 - rebuild gives DCOP issues

Hey all, SuSE 7.3 Pro, KDE 3.0.2 As mentioned on the list earlier, the QT3 RPM for 7.3 (and earlier) for KDE 3.0.2 is set up so Xft is not used (thus preventing anti-aliasing on the desktop and other places). I tried rebuilding the RPM and changing the build.sh script so it included Xft support. But the rebuilt RPM gives the problem where X starts and stops several times then goes into console mode. Very much like the problem many had with KDE 3.0.0. Maybe I rebuilt wrong? This was my first ever attempt to use a source RPM to rebuild a package. Here's the steps I took: 1- Installed the qt3 src RPM from kde.org's SuSE 7.3 release. 2- In SU mode, changed the build.sh script: [ "$VERSION" -lt 800 ] && XFT="-no-xft -no-xrender " || XFT="-xft -xrender -I/usr/include/freetype2/ " changed to [ "$VERSION" -lt 702 ] && XFT="-no-xft -no-xrender " || XFT="-xft -xrender -I/usr/include/freetype2/ " I could see that this worked during the compile. 3- In qt3.spec, changed a statement so: echo "useXft=true" >> ${RPM_BUILD_ROOT}/etc/X11/qtrc rather than useXft=false. 4- Rebuilt using "rpm -bb qt3.spec" . Three i386 RPMs were made with this (qt3, qt3-devel, qt3-devel-doc) I then uninstalled the qt3 RPM that came with 3.0.2, and intalled the newly rebuilt one. But then X wouldn't start. Going back to the "official" RPM fixed that. Since the 8.0 version isn't affected by this Xft issue, I tried the RPM for it as well, but no X start for it either. The problem that caused Adrian to build this without Xft support was in the 4.1 version of X. I'm using 4.2, and had no problem with earlier QT builds (prior to the end of May) that had Xft support. Maybe I missed something? Do I need to rebuild any other RPMs? Why am I as a XFree86 4.2 user being put through this just to get anti-aliasing to work? Why are we given no options? (Frustration questions...) Ah, well. For now, my Star Trek desktop font looks like a big unreadable mess... Getting Gaim & other Apps on the Menu & Desktop

Ok. Have gaim working from Bash. How do I get it to show up under the SuSE 8.0 K-Internet-Communication selections like Everybuddy, please? For that matter, how about as an icon on the desktop, please? Thanks again ... doc -- "And God said, let there be light ... "

Printing in Kmail

Printing an email from Kmail 1.4.1 to a Laserjet 3, it cuts off half of the last line at the bottom of the page. This is using either the LPR/LPRng print system or the Generic Unix LPD prinsystem on US Letter size paper in Suse 8.0. Does anyone know how to fix this? seems like there should be a marjin set somewhere. Art

Problems with initrd: it uses the wrong /lib/modules/<kernel>

Boot Problem

I've encountered a strange problem using Linux95 to boot my machine into SuSE v8.0 from Win98SE. Linux95 starts normally and closes Win98. The linux boot starts normally (I use loadlin) but hangs immediately after setting network interfaces lo and eth0. I have to cycle the power, hit F8, select boot to DOS and then restart the linux boot process manually. It's a tad annoying and I was wondering if anyone might have some insight as to what's going on here or, even more important, how to fix it. Thanks in advance.

Adding Windows partition to all SuSE box

I am giving a Dell Inspiron 3500 laptop to a friend. It currently has SuSE Personal 8.0 on it. She is willing to try it as long as there is a W98 partition on it. So I tried to install W98 from scratch on it and got the message that the drive was damaged and could not be formatted. The same thing happened when I tried to install W2000. Then I couldn't boot the SuSE 8.0 system. I reinstalled SuSe 8.0 easily enough, so I know the drive is okay, but what do I have to do to allow windows to install on it? Anyone know what I must do to remedy this situation? Thank you Neal
