Am I putting stuff in the right file?

In order to fix my USB mouse problem and get OSS running, I'm adding the appropriate lines (modprobe hid, modprove mousedev, & soundon) to /etc/init.d/boot.local. fstab options for mounting Win parts.

I just re-installed 8.0 and finally got my sound working properly. However, on this install, none of my Windows partitions were added to fstab automagically as they have been in past installs of 8.0. This is fine as I'm not really happy with the way SuSE names the drives. I need to add entries to fstab and would like your input for the options that I should use for Windows partitions. insmod

On previous thread I said the firwire harddrive problem was solved. It was until I rebooted. How can I get the insmod ochi1394 and insmod ieee1394 to hold permanently? I am rather new to Linux and still learning. Art

Making RPMs for SuSE

Hey, There are several programs that I'd like to make SuSE RPMs for (not part of the SuSE distro). I'm sorta new at making RPMs, so I'm wondering a few things... Right now, I'm making an RPM by taking a tarball and doing: rpm -tb tarballname.tar.gz This makes a "noarch" RPM that works fine on my system. (Note: Using 7.3 Pro on an i686 system) But will that RPM work on another person's SuSE system? I'm referring only to general programs, not anything that's "vital" to the linux system like the kernel or gcc... Should I be specifying a target installation place so that it matches where SuSE installs programs? Should I be specifying i686 when building the tarball? Or will the "noarch" work on an i386 (for example). Can I specify i386 when building the RPM to make an i386 RPM, or will that not work since I'm using an i686 system? Will there be any issues with an 8.0 user trying to use these RPMs? Again, it's just for some general programs, not vital stuff (ICQ programs, games, things like that). Yes, I'm obviously not to familiar with these things. But I've got a 100Mb space on my web host, and I've determined I'll only need about 20Mb of it at the most. Which leaves plenty of space to distribute some RPMs for SuSE users. Suse 7.3 network connection drops out

Dear all, I've installed SuSE 7.3 on my Athlon system. I experience the following problem: occasionally the (ethernet) network connection drops out (and stays out for at least a day, I never tried to wait longer). With this I mean that even ping to the router (using the IP number) does not work anymore. Network connection reappears after rebooting, but also when I simply execute the following commands (as root): ifconfig eth0 down ifconfig eth0 172.16.20.2 broadcast 172.16.255.255 netmask 255.255.0.0 rcroute start I have a RealTek 8139 network card. Suse 7.3 installed the 8139too driver, but I've replaced it with D. Becker's latest rtl8139 driver. Unfortunately, that didn't change the behaviour of my system at all. I can now use mii-diag, but that claims everything is fine with the card (even when after dropping the connection). Just in case you think it's cabling (but I can't see how the ifconfig thing would do anything about that). The system is connected with a cable to a minihub, which also has another (Sun) system. From there it goes to the main hub. While my Linux system's connection is down, the Sun still works happily on. One system manager claims it has something to do with the network server configuration (router, NIS, DNS, all that), but I have a hard time believing that because of the ifconfig 'remedy'. Any clues? Some info on the system: -Adaptec 29160N Ultra160 SCSI card - SONY SDT-7000 DAT tape * The tape is the only device on the SCSI bus. * Storing data to disk (with a 'tar cv --file=/dev/st0 ...') goes fast. Not a problem. * Restoring IS not good. As you sad, the drive is doing those 'little rewinds' and it is VERY slow. * I've seen the default module 'st' setting its default buffer size to 32 kb. Isn't that a bit small? copy DAT tapes to CD or DVD

Hi, I have a large archive of DAT tapes that I would like to copy onto CD's or DVD's. I have a DAT tape and a DVD writer attached to my machine. I haven't written CD's or DVD's before. I will appreciate any help or directions. TIA Shoshana

Virtual desktop

hi, i would like to have 2 desktop resolutions without having a virtual desktop for the second resolution. 1. 1280x1024 2. 1024x768 is this possible ? And how do i need to set this up using SAX2 with kind regards Jan van Roessel
