SuSE 8.0 and Windows 2000 Network File Sharing - How To

I frequently work from home, with a desktop machine I built running SuSE 8.0. I also have a laptop from work and I'd like to share files between the laptop and the SuSE box. I also have a need to VPN in to our Windows 2000 network at work, which I can already do from my desktop machine--when I boot it with W2K instead of Linux. So, what I need to do is: 1. VPN from SuSE into a W2K network from home and browse resources on that network. 2. Share files between my desktop at home (while it is booted into Linux), and a laptop at home running W2K. Factoids: 1. Home network comprises the desktop and the laptop machines plugging into a D-Link 704P switch. 2. The D-Link 704P provides DHCP to the desktop and the laptop, with private IP addresses of 10.0.0.xxx. 3. The D-Link WAN interface connects to a Westell DSL modem provided by Verizon. 4. Verizon's DSL service also uses DHCP, and public IP addresses assigned to the D-Link switch change frequently. 5. I'm a newbie to Linux, but have a fair amount of W2K and OS/2 networking knowledge. 6. I'm CIO (not CTO) of my company, which means there are probably large gaps in my basic networking knowledge! TIA for any help. P.S. I did RTFM "How-To" on VPN and Masquerading, but frankly it reads like a very thorough cricket rule book (no offence to the authors intended, the docs are indeed rigorous), when what I need is to learn how to play the game. YOU and Mozilla 1.0?

Why isn't Mozilla 1.0 available via YOU? The 1.1Alpha is already released...it can't take that long to verify 1.0 vs. .9.8 that shipped with SuSE 8.0. I sure would like to upgrade to 1.0.

Invalid sync freq. after running X

Hello, I have just recently done a fresh install of SuSE Professional 7.3. I had a running system that crashed hard (harddrive failure), and I had to replace it. With my old system, the screen would blank after a period of inactivity. The monitor would show a short error message "Invalid sync." and then shutdown into standby mode. This was ok, and I figure this is how it is supposed to work. With the new system, I get the same behavior as with the old, providing I haven't had any X sessions. If I have had an X session, the console blanks, and the monitor issues its "Invalid sync." message. Then it shows the message "Invalid scan freq." while showing wavy horizontal lines interspersed with an occasional wide greenish band going up the screen. The monitor does not go into standby mode. When I move the mouse (gpm is running) or type a character, the console returns to normal, and the monitor briefly displays the frequencies 38kHz/60kHz. Could this behavior have something to do with the "vga=" line in /etc/lilo.conf? The old system had "vga = normal". This freshly installed system has "vga = 788" in it, I assume by default. Could it have something to do with APIC? The entry for the default kernel, which I have been booted into when this happens, shows the line: 'append = "enableapic vga=0x0314 hdb=ide-scsi"'. The monitor is a 19" Cornerstone Color 45/101sf with horizontal scan rates from 31 to 101kHz and vertical scan rates from 50 to 160kHz. The sync on this monitor is Separate, H, V or composite H/v TTL level, or Sync on Green at 0.3 V p. (I am guessing this last explains the green bands.) Regards, Sean -- Theo. problems with mailq and sendmail

Hi, I have sendmail / mutt config on my laptop, Suse 8.0. ADSL/dialup system. When my laptop is connected everything is working smoothly, but when I unhook it from the network and write some letters, and "send them" I would expect them to be shown in queue using command "mailq", (just like it was on Suse 7.2.). Unfortunately this is not the case. when I "send" (system is off line) the sendmail takes very long time to put it to the queue, and the command mailq takes even longer to show the queue to be empty?! I set up my sendmail using Yast2. 1.Where are those written by me letters are placed? 2.Why mailq does not show them? 3.How can I fixed the problem so when I write my emails off line I'll see them in mailq? 4.How can I implement multiple personalities (I still have a problem with that) using mutt Thanks for any help, Wojtek

Since I have and older distro, I have to get the encrypted updates from suse.de instead of suse.com (gee, so glad to see the US has so many freedoms :/ Anyway, there are 2 sets of packages for the same thing (e.g. oppenssh.rpm and openssh-3.3p1-6.i386.rpm) are these the same files? They have the same size/date so I assume so, but I didn't want to accidentally install the wrong one if not. So, can I install either one? Thanks, Jeric

SuSE 8.0 FTP version & Fetchmail Problem

I installed the FTP version of 8.0 on my laptop yesterday and I'm using the fetchmail version (updated by YOU) that is for 8.0. I have the sendmail MTA set to dedicated connection and I use the args "fetchamil -v -a -F " to pull POP3 from my mail provider. Only catch is, fetchmail doesn't fetch for me ? HD problems

Hi list, I updated my ssh with the patch available from SuSE's website. After the update, my box got very sick. A few applications were not working, Netscape, Xterm, etc. Xserver was behaving wierd and in two occasions it died and took me wo a black and white login screen. As if it is not enough, my box shutdown automatically in the middle of an ftp session. After that it would not boot anymore. I tried to boot from CD #1 (SuSE 7.1) and got this messages: Bad map in ll_rw_block EXt2-fs: unable to read superblock MINIX-fs: unable to read superblock reiserfs_read_super: unable to read superblock on dev 09:00 Any suggestions??? SaX2 and SuSE 8.0

hello: I installed SuSE 8.0 from the ftp site. Everything looks fine, except X. SaX2 dies when it starts up and I can't seem to overcome. All the necessary files are installed. This video card(S3 AGP) worked fine with SuSE 7.1 and Xfree 4.0. It doesn't record any error in the log. Does anyone has a suggestion, please. If it doesn't work, can I still use tt fonts under Xfree 3.x and how? thanks __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
