SuSE 8 Update and Gnome Problems

Just updated to SuSE 8.0 and seem to be having problems with gnome and sawfish. Problem #1: I used to be able to hold down <alt> and click the middle mouse button(wheel) on the title bar of a window and it would bring up a menu to make a window sticky, change the frame type and frame style, etc... I no longer am able to get to this menu. Problem #2: In the gnome control center I get the error "The applet encountered an error" when choosing anything under "Sawfish Window Manager". Please help a newbie at this. Thanks Peter Akre

Methods of secure SQL Database data exchange over Internet?

Hello SuSE folkz, I need to setup Web based MySQL database service over Internet. Remote clients should be able to connect to database port 3306 and perform secure data exchange (queries, reads and writes). Are there any methods to perform such data exchanges in a most secure manner? I was thinking about keeping port 3306 open for remote connections 'cause Mysql has a very good (per host, per user, per database, per table, per row based) security mechanisms. But in this case the use of firewall on a separate box is purposeless. It it the same as having database server and firewall on the same box. May be you can point me to other more secure solutions? Is it possible to use ssl for database connections? I couldn't find a decent answer on this question. Thank you in advance for any advises or sources of information. Alex

How to get scanlogd to run at boot

Hello, everyone. I am having a hard time getting scanlogd to start at boot time. It is configured to run at boot time, the rc.d script is all set up. /var/log/boot.msg says it started with a return code of 0, which to me means it started without any problems. If I log in normally as root, and start it, it works just fine, and detects my basic nmap scans. Anyone know how to get scanlogd to reliably start at boot ? Thanks, Stuart.

Displaying Custom Headers in KMail

hi, is it possible to display custom headers in KMail? the default options of "All Headers" are too much but the "Long Headers" are not enough. thanks, xiaolei

Changing Java Version

Hi all, I am new to SuSE 8.0 (i'm a caldera user for the most part), but we do production work in Java here, and I would like to know how to get SuSE 8.0 to point to SunJava2-1.3.1 when I type 'java' (instead of the default 1.1.8). Is there a easy way to do this, I know I can change the links by hand, but would prefer a easier method as a workaround. -Bill

Sorry Togan but I had already visited both of your pointers and neither applied to my question. I am a SuSE v6.3 user and have not had the opportunity to experience the advances SuSE has made in versions since then. I have NO problem with Yast and I think it is a very nice tool. The issue I had was how to get a newly installed service configured to auto-start after a restart of the OS and luckily Keith Winston provided me with the direction I needed...the run-level editor...Thank You Keith! Yes, it is my fault that I have not read the printed manual cover to cover but a conversion guide for the older versions would be nice as it would save mucho time. Long Live SuSE! Problems with sending/receiving email

Just installed 8.0 from 7.3. Before the upgrade, my email suddenly stopped downloading or uploading messages. (I use Evolution, but also tested Kmail) I don't know if I changed anything. I'll click send/receive, it goes thru the paces and looks like it's working and then closes the connection with nothing downloaded. (Yes, I know that I should receive mail and the mailbox was not empty). Does "sendmail" do anything in respect to the above? I may have turned it off because postfix had a problem with it. Any ideas? What about XFS quota support?

Hi all, I am going to install Suse Linux 8.0 on my home-server. It serves all my homemates and it uses disk quota, and I am currently using ext2. I would like to switch from ext2 to a more modern filesystem, such as ReiserFS or XFS. I have seen that ReiserFS has the best performance overall, but it takes ages during quotacheck after a crash. What about XFS? Is it faster to do the quotacheck than ReiserFS? Praise
