Yast2 concerns

I greatly miss the features that the older "YaST" provided. One was the single package installation from a local directory. The other is the ability to go to various SuSE ftp sites, such as the supplementary directory and "compare" the packages there with those installed on my machine. For instance, I could look at the KDE-Base dir and see if an updated package was there. This was extremely usefull in order to apply patched/fixed packages and stabilize KDE. Now I have to do an "rpm -qv foo" to see what version is installed on my system and compare this to the files on the SuSE ftp server. This can be very time consuming and labor intensive if one desires to check the ftp site package against installed package in the KDE-Apps directory for example. I would urge you to integrate some of these features in YaST2. I do understand you attempts at unifying these to programs. However, the aforemention features would be greatly appreciated. Thank You. SSH and SuSE 8.0 not working

Hello, Just installed SuSE 8.0 and cannot get ssh to work. I can ssh *into* my new system, but not *out* to another system. I am using the very same configuration files and keys I have on my SuSE 7.3 system where it all works fine. This includes my ~/.ssh directory and the /etc/ssh directory -- all copied from the 7.3 system to the new 8.0 system. Here is what I get (from the new SuSE 8.0 system to another, unrelated, SuSE system): ssh thinkpad Permission denied (publickey). I get the same problem if I delete the .ssh directory. I must be connecting to the other system because if I try to ssh to a system that is not running sshd I get a different error: ssh windowsbox ssh: connect to address 192.168.0.3 port 22: Connection refused -- Robert C. 8 on Inspiron 3500

Hi, Having decided that the drive on my 7000 had died I did a clean install on wife's 3500. Some thoughts: Make was not installed by default which seems odd. Try as moght I cannot get remote access allowed. Inetd is running with telnet ( in house network therefore safe ) enabled - portmap is not running but I cannot seem to get telnet in enabled in any run level ( presumably this is my lack of knowledge ) - otherwise 8 seems great - only shame is that my most used emacs package won't run under the version of emacs ( Not a SuSE issue ) and I don not know enough lisp to sort it. Easiest install since I started with 6.2 F

I used "change source of installation" selected hard drive and entered the full path to the updates, when i hit "next" it comes up with a dialog box "No installation data found on medium." There is no "CD1" directory on my local hard drive, it is a mirror of the update tree, ie: .../ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/8.0/ /a1 /ap1 . . . Is there an easy way to make this work or do I have to glom all the updates under one directory named cd1?

Tech Support? What tech support? That is the one weakness of SuSE. The tech support is the list. The best replacement for MS Office?

Hello, I trying to perform 100% percent of my work without using any MS tools or products. I am successful with the exception of being able to open/save MS apps. I currently use SuSE 7.3 + KOffice. Personally, I like KOffice, but the file filters are not the best, at least in my experience. I have not used StarOffice in sometime -- is this a better option? I have tried OpenOffice beta -- however, the installer locked two of my SuSE boxes, so this does not seem like a good choice for office use. OpenOffice.org and SuSE

I note that there are now Debian packages available for OpenOffice.org 641d, and that OpenOffice is due to go 1.0 pretty soon, in time for 8.1 presumably. Will SuSE 8.1 be shipping with OpenOffice as well as StarOffice 6.0, one of the two, or has this not been decided/thought about yet? Just interested to know. Daniel Rees e: dan(a)dwrees.co.uk
