SuSE FTP and .iso images?

Hi, Is it possible to make an installation CD set by burning the files from the FTP site to CD? I have tried to just burn the needed files to CD, but that did not work. I know I can make an FTP install floppy set which allows for network installation, but I wanted to make a hard copy and install form that. If someone could point me to some documentation on doing this I would appreciate it. All documentation I have seen is for network installs, and why .iso images are not uploaded to the ftp (except for sparc's), but nothing on the necessary files to create installation CD's. $80 a year for the newest version is getting too expensive. (Again) Konq & Launching Progs as Root

Running Suse8 with all current updates. It has always been my practice to run as a user, and to invoke Konq & Konsole in superuser mode when I need them thus. But with Suse8 I can no longer (as a user) launch X-based programs from these windows. Logged in as root I can, but not when as a user and launching from these programs. For instance in Konq I cannot right-click|OpenWith|Advanced Editor a file: "KDEInit could not launch 'kwrite'". And from the su konsole # konqueror and I get: Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server Xlib: No protocol specified konqueror: cannot connect to X server :0 In user konsole $ kdesu konqueror yields nothing. This looks alot like a security issue. Maybe the X server is intentionally disabled from accepting root commands from a user. Or maybe it's one missing setup step. Availability of Pro 8.0 in Canada

I have again been informed that update for my 7.3 to level 8.0 has been backordered, this in spite of the SuSE site showing that 8.0 is now shipping and that many SuSE users - literally around the globe - have taken delivery, not to mention retailers. And also of interest is the listing for SuSE 8.0 in good old amazon.com to which reference was made yesterday. There is a little patch of fine print there which says that it cannot be shipped to Canada, so I presume - in spite of losing 4 soldiers to 'friendly fire' - we are now engraved on some paranoid terrorist list. Anyone else in the True North fare any better? All I can elicit from SuSE (via digitalriver.com) is they are sorry but they don't know when, but they wont charge me until they ship. okies, got 8.0 installed w/ much less trauma than expected.So that's very nice The system update also went very quickly... There are a few strange things, for instance ,the first "jarring" bit is NO floppies, even tho the packaged books refer to them as being "in the box" install floppy and , I'm guessing a modules floppy. and tehn there's this: although it finds both the ide cdrecorder ( as it's designated) and the scsi cdrom , it refuses to play music from the cdrecorder, and that is the one w/ the sound card installed on it ( well, it only makes sense if you ever want to check the sound I supose. but as 7.3 never could decide which one ought to do what ( fortunately, xcdroast sorted them pretty quickly, but that apparent;y is not something I can pass to the cd player(s) , apparently. I love the neat backgrounds guys ... genral kudos to the team that must've sweated blood to have so much work out of the box , and thank goodness, no more of that stupid kinternet icon.( especially as it isn't needed here. <G>) Either I'm more easily pleased , or it's a great product. And there are enough fixes in it to make it definatly worth the price. But , I join in hte general condemnation of no more stickers... <sigh> Please, SuSE, don't loose your playful streek. It's very endeering <G>

Upgrade Suse 7.2 to 8.0

Hello all, I'm running Suse 7.2 and some day I'll need to upgrade to 8.x . I have been looking at the mail list for informations and I'm getting mixed messages. I'm looking for detail documentation preferable from Suse shows all pre-install, install, and configuration of the migration process from 7.x - 8.0. I have a production system that runs critical apps and I can't afford to make a mistake in OS upgrade. Here is my configuration : /dev/hda1 / ext2 /dev/hda2 /boot ext2 /dev/hda3 /user ext2 /dev/hdb1 /home ext2 /dev/hdb2 swap swap So if you have information on how to move to 8.0 without any loss of data with the above configuration, Please send them my way............. reconfiguring TeX memory requirements

Hi, I am trying use passivetex and I ran into memory problem ! TeX capacity exceeded, sorry [main memory size=384000] Which I know along with additional changes needs to be applied to /etc/texmf/texmf.cnf file and all done. running SuSEconfig --module \ tetex was what I thought would solve the problem. Yet I still hit the same problem what am I missing here ? hehe...I am doing the same thing as Ben but my officemate is our Windows only network admin so I am trying to convince him that not every distro is as painful as Redhat v7.2 to administer which is what he tried first before I bought v8.0 and told him to toss RH. I am experiencing the learning curve as well because I am finally stepping up from good ol' v6.3 of SuSE. partitioning drive for safety`

When I would set up a W$ NT box, I would always set up a different drive (D) for the apps and dta, with the OS residing on C. This way, if, or should I say when I had to reinstall toe OS, I could do it to drive C, leave D alone, and not lose my data. (Had to reinstall most programs though). This saved a lot of time. Now, my experience with Suse has been great, especially with ext3, but my paranoia want to know if this can be done on Linux, so to speak. Any suggestions? TIA Harry G
