[OT] IBM A20M Card Services with Sun Solaris 8 For Intel

Morning/Evening all, I have been Given a task at work that requires me to load Sun Solaris 8 for Intel on one of my home computers to develop some courseware for a commercial product. Solaris can use my laptop monitor as a 16 color monitor which is sufficient for what I need. It can not however use my PCMCIA network cards. I have been advised that if I can stop the PCMCIA card services, then Solaris 8, will be able to find my old Xircom card and use it. I am hoping that someone here on this list will be able to help me identify the card services in the bios, I can find Card Services or PCMCIA listed, and advise me how to turn them off. I will be using my Linux laptop for this so I will need to re-enable the card services in about 10 weeks time when I have finished with Solaris. Any and All help will be greatly appreciated. Can't delete bogus file

I have a file that is in some bad state. Here is an ls -l: # ls -l total 32 -rw-r--r-- 1 root 24576 3222302580 Apr 6 1937 kdebase.desktop If I try to delete it I get an error: # rm kdebase.desktop rm: cannot unlink `kdebase.desktop': Operation not permitted e2fsck on the filesystem finds no errors. Wait for 8.1?

Now that 8.0 is out and people are getting some experience with it, I'm wondering if it pays to wait for version 8.1 rather than live on the "bleeding edge". I've usually found that the ".0" version of any product is much less stable than the next one. With all the changes, particularly to KDE, I'm worried about the stability of 8.0. (If I don't get 8.0 I'll certainly get 8.1, so SuSE will sell me a copy in any case.) Paul

Package XF86_DRI missing from 8.0?

Hi, Chances are great that I have missed posts about this subject, since I am now in the 'getting the installation perfect'-stage and thus am reinstalling the whole lot quite often, BUT: Where are the DRI packages for X? I have a Matrox 450 and would like to have the whole lot configured with 3D support, but the DRI packages seem to be missing. Is it me that is missing something, or my SuSE 8.0 PRO DVD? Hey Robert, I've got a fair amount of experience with warm Athlons. Here are the two things that worked best for me: 1. A PC Power & Cooling 400-watt Silencer power supply. It's not silent, but it's pretty quiet. More to the point, it's solid, reliable, and keeps the innards nice and cool. PC Power & Cooling also make some nice quiet 80 mm fans if you have room in your case for another exhaust fan. 2. If you have the room, the best Athlon CPU cooler out there has got to be Alpha-Novatech 8045. It's HUGE, it might not fit your motherboard (see the supported list at http://www.alphanovatech.com/mb_pal_8045e.html ) or your case (check the clearance between your CPU and anything above or beside it), and will require a complete disassembly of your system (it screws to the motherboard). You can take your pick of 80 mm fans for the top of it - I recommend the Coolermaster (~ 29db). Prior to the 8045, my Athlon averaged about 65 degrees Celsius. Now it's 45 degrees Celsius. And if anyone working for any of the aformentioned companies would like to give me cash for my unsolicited testimonials, I'll happily accept. Bill Sheehan Postmaster 617-373-7927 "Robert C. PM To all who gave me feedback on this... After discussing this with someone at work I think the real problem may be an overloaded/overheating power supply. This is based on the symptoms -- more than half the crashes are actually the power cycling. There is a "click" and the system reboots. When I get home I am going to check to see what the wattage of my power supply is. In any case, I ordered an interesting fan. It sits in the case either behind or replacing the intake fan at the bottom front of the case and has ductwork to direct most of the air towards the top of the case where the CPU, power supply, and video card are located. ISO backups

For those who want to download ISOs as a backup for their CDs I offer the following idea. Create iso images directly from your CDs. Granted it takes a bit of time but is definatly less time than if you would do the download. The command I got from the April 2002 issue of Linux Journal in a neat article about creating a CD Jukebox.. cat /dev/hdx > filename Where /dev/hdx is your CD device (note: a mount is NOT required( filename is what you want to call the ISO image. Example: /usr/local/iso/suse-80-1.iso Make 1 file for each CD and presto you have your image files in case you loose the CDs or as indicated earlier on this list.. your dog messes it up. Problem with YOU and SuSE 8.0

I recently installed 8.0 and am having problems with YOU. The first time I ran YOU it said it couldn't verify any packages because it looked like I didn't have GPG installed. So, I chose not to install any packages and checked if I had GPG. I do have GPG installed, I noticed some others were having problems with this. Now, if I try launching YOU, it will open the YOU window, say it's searching for a list of ftp sites, then the YOU window will close. I tried uninstalling the yast2-agent-you, config-online-update, and trans-online-update. But, I still can't launch YOU. I was wondering if anyone has an idea how I can get YOU to at least launch. Hi Tor I have edited /etc/X11/XF86Config with the settings for the mouse Section "InputDevice" Driver "mouse" Identifier "Mouse(1)" Option "ButtonNumber" "5" Option "Device" "/dev/usbmouse" Option "Name" "AutoDetected" Option "Protocol" "imps/2" Option "Vendor" "AutoDetected" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" EndSection But still the mouse fails to work. Just to clarify the mouse is a Logitech Cordless, which along with a Logitech Cordless iTouch Keyboard worked fine during the installation phase of SuSE 8.0. But the mouse, whose connector from the Logitech receiver box is plugged into a standard PS/2 mouse socket, fails to operate having rebooted back into Linux following completion of the install. I hope I have retyped everything exactly as it is in XF86Config as I am still using WinME for email, as I cannot finish configuring Linux till I get the mouse working and have not managed to find out how to store Linux text files so as to make them readable in WinME. I still cant get the dual booting to work as it appears the original WinME MBR has been totally lost, can anyone suggest how I might recreate such without having to remove Linux and re-installing Win98? I'm currently using a floppy disk to boot into WinME and the MBR for Linux. SuSE 8, Nvidia and limited resolution

I've just installed SuSE8, run through YOU to download/install updates (including the nvidia drivers) and when I set up X using sax2 I can only use a maximum resolution of 1280x1024. I always run at 1600x1200 (as I have a big montior) and have done as long as I've been using SuSE and a Nvidia graphics card (Geforce 2 GTS). Email Server III and SuSE Firewall....

Ok...now I just got two new eservers in and it is awesome... I want to put SuSE Firewal on one and Email Server III on the other Both are PIII 1Ghz processors ATA100 Raid with two 20.4 GB hard drives 7200RPMs Two network Cards... 100MPs (in each one) Except one has 256 MB memory The other has 512 Mb Memory Now 24,000 dollar question is: Would it be better to use the 512MB as the firewall or Email Server III I would think that since the firewall is just throwing packets back and forth that I don't need something with a lot of memory. While the email server will be dealing with Cyrus Imap, Skyrix Green, Apache, plus getting muptiple users using different functions of the server. I would think that you would want the one with more memory for Email Sever III. Would I be way off base? Or would it make much of a difference if I used an older PIII 700mhz machine for the firewall and give it lots of harddrive space for the logs. Would it make sense to have such a high end machine for a firewall?
