Cannot mount floppy in 8.0

When I click the floppy icon on the desktop, I get an error that /dev/floppy not found in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab. If I try to mount through contol center, block devices, by right-clicking on the fd0 entry, get fd0 invalid block device. Entry was not in /etc/fstab so I added it, copying from other computer. Still no results. This worked without a problem in 7.3 and floppy works in Windows and works on laptop. Have any ideas on this? Art

Hi everyone. Approaching the end of the academic year, /home on our AMD 1100 school server occupies over 13Gb of the 40 Gb Disk. Could this be why it's so slow now? Thanks, Steve.

I saw the exact same thing. Whenever the "GPG" message popped up (every patch) I told it to install the patch anyway. Kind of a pain since you have to do this for EVERY patch it finds. But anyway, it seemed to work fine. Compiling a new kernel in 7.3

Hi! This is perhaps a silly question, but I have looked through most of the list archives and found nothing to help me. I have recently moved fro SuSE 6.4 to 7.3 and while I had no problems compiling kernels in the older version, I cant work out what I am doing wrong with the newer version. After going through the usual steps to make a bzImage and copying that and the System.map to /boot plus adding the correct entry to lilo.conf and running lilo, the computer hangs after the message: Loading linux...................... Uncompressing Linux...Ok, booting the kernel I can of course get the new kernel to load, but only after the computer has been booted with the cd and choosing the option load installed system. Only after changing back to the original SuSE kernel, will the system boot on its own. What am I doing wrong? Soundblaster 16 configuration

I just installed 7.3 on my machine that has a SB16 ISA card that has run quite well under RH 6.2 and 7.1, so I am loathe to use others. But it is now giving me fits under 7.3. I have always used the kernel drivers, but it appears that SuSE prefers the ALSA drivers, and so I have tried. using yast2 to update packages in 8.0

I just updated (clean install) to 8.0. I am trying to figure how to do some things i used to do with yast in previous versions with yast2 now. Since I have a slow link, i am in the habbit of downloading the complete update tree for my distribution, then using yast to update the packages from the local hard drive. On my fresh install of 8.0 I have not been able to do this. I go to yast2 online update and select an installation source of hard disk under the expert button and give it the full path to the local mirror of the updated SuSE packages. When i then try to update, I get several lines like "Could not copy patch-information" then a box stating "Cannot get the patches from the server. Try another SuSE FTP/HTTP server." I have been able to update some packages via ftp. I also took a look at the support database and was not able to find a similar issue (there was a 7.3 issue of a missing update.inf file, but this does exist). Is it possible to update individual packages that are stored on a local hard drive in the same way it was done in yast1? The options available seem to indicate this can be done, but I have not been able to get it to work yet. -david

Dual Boot - SuSE8.0 / Win2k

Over the weekend I did a clean install of 8.0 and Windows 2000 Pro. I installed Win2k first to the first 2GB of a 20GB drive and put 8.0 on the rest with a 16MB ext3 /boot partition, followed by a 256MB SWAP, and the rest ReiserFS / I can boot to linux and access the Win2k partition, but when I restart and select windows from the boot screen, it gets to a black screen and in the upper left corner it says Loading Windows, and then it just sits there for hours and does nothing. When I used 7.3 and Win2k all worked fine, but I forgot to take a look at my lilo.conf file before I went and did a clean install. Does anyone have a similiar configuration and could include a working lilo.conf or give explicit instructions on how to get lilo to boot windows, I am pretty green when it comes to advanced linux stuff, so simplicity is of the essence. Thanks to all in advance. By the way, 8.0 seems to be the best OS that I have ever used. Kudos to the SuSE team. Modern CPUs are hot. Nothing wrong with that, so long as you keep 'em cool. It sounds like you've got case ventilation and CPU cooler problems. Classical CD's to MP3: descriptors

This is a little OT but not really, since I'd be using Linux tools for the job. I want to convert some of my many classical CDs to MP3 format. The problem is how to translate the usual classical music descriptors to the Artist/Song/Album descriptors usually used for MP3 files. Are there any usual conventions for this? For what it's worth, the best classical descriptors of a single track would usually be: Composer Work Movement/Section Recording artists (maybe several, as in a concerto) Thanks for any help (and suggestions for the best tool).
