Linux Database and Web server considerations

Hello SuSE folkz, Is this a good idea to put Firewall, NFS, Database and Web services on one Linux box or they should be separated? The Web server part is MySQL database driven interface through persistent fcgi scripts. MySQL Database server should be able to operate in a long run with up to 60GB of critical data. The Firewall should keep in stealth mode all unnessesary ports and provide masquerading and routing for a small internal network. The NFS server should export publicly shared data directory to the internal network. I proposed this configuration: A separate Linux box provides firewall/masquerading/routing services. The second Linux box serves as a NFS, Database and Web server to generate less network traffic during database queries. One co-worker proposed less costly alternative to put everything on one box. Another one expressed his opinion in separating all services between four Linux boxes. Since we are on a tight budget we can't create dedicated data center for our tasks. Could somebody enlighten me what are advantages and drawbacks of both these methods. What is a cheapest variant in this situation. Thank you in advance. Alex

I have 8.0 Professional on my workstation and I'm very happy to report that it rolled on without a single hitch, and everything was picked up by YaST2 without issue. Am I dreaming...somebody pinch me ! Thanks folks for a job well done. http://www.geekonline.net says (translated from Swedish): "Due to a cooperation(?) problem, we are unable to deliver SuSE. We recommend Mandrake instead." (?) - Best guess at what the word meant, but something of that nature. All right, who's not playing nice, SuSE or GeekOnline? Granted SuSE is available from some other places in Sweden, but very few. And this is something SuSE should really look into. Just thought some people might be interested I can finally do my "job" without windows. Ok its a little bit clunky but Dreamweaver is now a reality on linux for those who don't want to use anything else finally you can smile dids

suse 8 an samba autostart

I have noticed that several people have mentioned that rc.config if no longer used. I used to edit it to set samba to auto start up on boot up. so does anyone know where to look for that setting now. thanks. also i noticed that proftp ftp server was not on the cd's or i maybe I missed it when i was going thrue selecting stuff to install. jack

Okay, I thought you're talking about the installation cd's or ftp.suse.com as install. source for packages of the distribution. yast2 only works on a full install. tree incl. all those helper files that you find on cd, where yast(2) gets its ino from. It doesn't work for indiviudual packages. look at http://sdb.suse.com/, there's an article for how to install packages in suse linux. I just found it when I checked for all articles for SL 8.0. Basically, use e.g. kpackage or just plain "rpm"... Michael
