Thursday evening, I visited the software page at amazon.com. I found the following rankings on the list of the top ten sellers (updated hourly): #2 SuSE Linux 8.0 Pro #5 Win XP Home Upgrade #10 Win XP Pro Upgrade Checked again Sunday morning and found that Microsoft was offering an incredible $40 rebate on the home edition, $45 on the pro edition. Coincidence, or does MS closely watch these sites? Despite the MS rebates, SuSE is still on the list, #7 as of a few minutes ago. -- Neal Eldred

Manual installation - autoload of modules?

Hello all! To SuSE: Great job on 8.0! I must say, I am more than amazed, and I've been with you for a while! :) Just wondering why the "autoload of modules" option was removed from the manual (yast) installation? This is for when one wants to install from a network source like NFS. (Got to love that DVD!) Not complaining, since I did get it to work. However, it was a great advantage to newbies. I say this because I wanted to see if my father could install it without any help. After I got the module loaded, he was able to do the rest; but, the "autoload" option would've made it easier. :) Thanks for all your hard and excellent work! TLO

SuSE has enemies?

Did anyone else notice that the very first time you start up the Konqueror web browser in 8.0 it is already set up to always reject cookies from the following sites: .ivwbox.de .linuxtoday.com .linuxtoday.org .mediaplex.com .tagesschau.de Now, I'm as cookie-paranoid as the next guy, but I'd like to know: What does SuSE have against these sites? It seems to work fine, except that that build does not have SSL support and does not want to doe DIGEST-MD5 against my cyrus imapd, so I have to use plaintext authentication. -Marcel

SuSE 8.0 and the Euro scam

Can anyone offer a credible explanation for the following: Suse 8.0 Personal - Euro 43.02 in Germany, Euro 53.77 in UK Suse 8.0 Pro - Euro 68.87 in Germany, Euro 81.34 in UK These are the net ex VAT prices from the SuSE UK & German websites. After VAT the situation is even worse. Based on 1 Pound = 1 .62 Euro (it's been within +/-2% of this for many weeks, I track it almost daily) Now I think SuSE 8.0 is probably good value even at the UK price but why should I pay more for an identical (it is, isn't it?) product? In the Euro zone or not, there's no excuse for such a blatant con, or are Linux people (anoraks, nerds etc.) supposed to be totally detached from reality? Charles

Volunteers need for the Linux Tutorial

Hi All! I am looking for volunteers to help me with my Linux Tutorial (www.linux-tutorial.info) Since I cannot program well enough to be involved in any major project, I have decided to make my book "Linux User's Resource" available on the Web as part of my contribution to the Internet community. I have updated the book as well as added a lot of new material. In addition, the site contains almost 500 questions to test your knowledge about Linux, the Internet and computers, in general. My goal is to eventually provide all the material included in the LPI certification for both level I and II. You will also find multiple "Did You Know? entries on each page, which provide tips and tricks related to the material. From each page there is also a "More Info" link, which points the visitor to additional resources related to the specific topic. In additional to its educational goal, the site is to create public awareness for the Jessie Arbogast Medical Fund. If you remember, Jessie is the young boy who was attacked last summer by a shark and had his arm bitten off. As a result, he lost almost all of his blood and doctors on the scene gave him little chance of survival. Well, Jessie survived and despite having his arm re-attached, he has not fully recovered. As is the case with so many middle-class families, the medical care the Jessie requires is a great financial burden (not to mention the emotional burden of working through Jessie's recovery.) Details can be found at www.jimmo.com/Jessie. Because of the scope of this project, I need as much help as I can get. I am grateful for any contribution you can make. Anything from suggestions for improving the layout or appearance to updating the articles or even writing on new topics will be greatly appreciated. For those of us who cannot program, but would still like to give something back to the Linux community, I think projects like this provide a great opportunity. Plus, we can help a young boy in need, should people make donations to Jessie's medical fund as a result of our work. Rather than filling up people's mailboxes, you can reply to me directly. No *X*?

I have SuSE 7.3 on a Dell Dimension 8200 with an Nvidia GeForce2 MX with TV Out video card. I installed the SuSE and all went well until I tried the X/sax set up when the screen went black and nothing happened. I'm not sure where to look -- According to the SuSE site, nvidia is supposed to be supported? Any clues, tips, hints, ideas for this determined newbie? Thanks!

21.1.1 and records-mode

Hi, I have just changed from 21.1 ( running under SuSE 7.1 ) to 21.1.1 under SuSE 8.0. Since then records-mode fails on me when I try and create a new entr with title eg Subject with: "wrong type argument integerp, "^\$Subject\$: " Does anyone else have this experience or can any one suggest a possible solution? Many TIA Francesco
