2.4.17 minor problems & fixes

Hi all Suse 7.2 pro after compiling and installing kernel 2.4.17 (from www.kernel.org) everything seems mostly fine but: - console font in consoles 2 to 5 are wrong, cannot get line symbols so things like Yast & make menuconfig look a bit strange. They can be set to default in yast to, say, lat9w-16.psfu so things look OK, Suseconfig runs, but at next boot up the settings have gone. For console 1 (boot up console) everything is fine, settings are recalled between boot ups. What configuration file should I be looking in? A fix - Sound: for info sound & sound module (ALSA) loading just would not work with 2.4.17 until I got & compiled Alsa drivers 0.5.12a (note the 'a') now everything runs great. 0.5.12 stopped working 2 or 3 kernels ago I believe. Useful tip I hope - I can't resist dabbling, so I have an experimental Linux install on a spare hard disk. I've fitted two hard disk pullout bays / carriers on my pc. That way I try new and maybe dangerous configs & software on the old drive, and only useful and safe stuff then gets put on my "clean" install. Charles

SENDMAIL_SMARTHOST and "Relaying denied"

Suddenly I am getting all my email returned with the following error: (reason: 550 5.7.1 <x(a)y.z>... Relaying denied) This just started happening after I had been away for 4 days without trying to send any email -- when I got back everything I sent got that error. I can "fix" the problem by removing the SENDMAIL_SMARTHOST from my sendmail.rc.config, but this is not satisfactory since some people's email systems won't accept email sent from me unless I use a SMARTHOST (I think this is because I don't have a "real" hostname and IP address, causing my mail to get killed by some spam filters). I don't remember changing anything to cause this "Relaying denied" to start happening, but perhaps I messed something up before I left. Cron output

I wonder why my cron jobs don't give me output as mail to root. I tried to configure to send me mail always. It also applies to at jobs. Ideas? /Peter

When I bought my SuSE 7.2 pro from SuSE, our local BestBuy still had 6.4, 7.0 and 7.1 versions on the shelf. Needless to say, BestBuy has yet to put 7.3 on its shelves here in Jacksonville, Florida. I'm still sorting out 7.2, myself. Use of Irq 9?

Ihave some problems with deciding which irq to use for my ethernet card. Possibilities given as a choice include 3,5,9,10,11,12 and 15. At the moment, before installing the ethernet card, 3 is taken by a serial port, 5 by usb-uhci, 9 is not mentioned on this place but somewhere it says it is a bridge, 10 is my soundcard, 11 is my TV card and 15 is ide1. My question is, could I put the ethernet card on irq 9? Or should I put my serial port which is used for an UPS on another irq? In that case, which one?

Kernel panic

Hi, I'm dual booting win ME and SuSE 7.3 Pro. Lately I did a defrag on windows and when i try to boot linux , I get the following message kernel panic: VFS: unable to mount root fs on 03:05 I had lot of localization setting and more, can somehow I'll be able to get my linux working without reinstalling? Just installed the thing and it went surprisingly well for a very first "go" w/ it. I'm not much of a user of Word Processors or Office Suites Generally , but this looks pretty nice. It's streets ahead of where the SO5.2 is , and it does install very nicely w/o the Java ( even tho it found a Java environmen , I thought I'd give Ben's "trick" a try. And I was stunned when it didn't even really complain , or put up any kind of resistance. " AreaYou really rally sure?" whiney stuff sends me spare! ) The only hting I can't seem to locate is , an OpenOffice6 , or indeed openOffice.org icons. There are internal icons, for the buttons on the tool bars asn the like , but those aren't in an easy to locate place either. Does anyone have an OpenOffice Icon? or have a clue where they might be located? On another note , When I was browsing the Sun OpenOffice6 location, I saw they were talking about various folks putting the site ( for want of a better word) on Cd's and one could buy them for a reasonable fee. Edmunds Enterprises of America,Inc have a super deal ( I think) They'll send you a cd w/ all the files o it ( windows and linux versions , as well as Sparc, and IIRC even one for the Mac and the ubiquitous Scources ) at a price of $0.99 and shipping was $1.50 It is hardly worth the time to download it.
