SENDMAIL_SMARTHOST and "Relaying denied"
Suddenly I am getting all my email returned with the following
error:
(reason: 550 5.7.1

I can "fix" the problem by removing the SENDMAIL_SMARTHOST from my sendmail.rc.config
I don't remember changing anything to cause this "Relaying denied" to start happening, but perhaps I messed something up before I left.
Your ISP has made some changes, ostensibly to crack down on spam. You could ask them for some details, but many ISP's have clueless people who answer the phones... :-( For your reference, in case it helps, here are a couple of lines from my sendmail.cf (in this case, I'm a standalone user at home. If my wife sends e-mail, and doesn't want to be masqueraded as me, she'll use KMail or Netscape, with their own built-in SMTP stuff, which bypasses what I'me setting here in sendmail): # "Smart" relay host (may be null) DS # who I masquerade as (null for no masquerading) (see also $=M) DMgordon.pritchard@shaw.ca My ISP is happy, and I don't get recipient-bounces (because my outgoing From: *does* resolve, in case they do a name-lookup). -Gord

Is there a howto or reference (at 3rd or 4th grade level) available detailing the installation/use of SMARTHOST? -- Pat Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 Registered at: http://counter.li.org

Yes, you are probably right. I thought the error message was coming from my sendmail, but it is probably coming from the ISP (road runner).
For your reference, in case it helps, here are a couple of lines from my sendmail.cf (in this case, I'm a standalone user at home. # "Smart" relay host (may be null) DS
This is exactly what I get by removing SENDMAIL_SMARTHOST and is the "solution" I wasn't quite happy with (some email services refuses my messages). Another change I get in sendmail.cf is the following: # persistent host status directory O HostStatusDirectory=.hoststat Without a smart host, the above is commented out.
# who I masquerade as (null for no masquerading) (see also $=M) DMgordon.pritchard@shaw.ca
I though this was only supposed to contain a domain name, not a full email address. I tried it both ways and it didn't make any difference. Seems that sendmail ignores everything but the domain name.
My ISP is happy, and I don't get recipient-bounces (because my outgoing From: *does* resolve, in case they do a name-lookup).
In my case, the mail was rejected even though the From: was set to a "real" name. Other things in the header identified my internal network name. I had to use SMARTHOST to make that pert of the header use a "real" name. -- ____________________________________________________________________ Robert Paulsen paulsen@texas.net

While we're on the subject, how do any of you with similar setups handle a situation where you have *multiple* E-mail addresses, and want each outgoing reply to be From: the address that the E-mail replied to was sent To:? I have kludged together a few things to deal with this, but I am not entirely happy with them; among other things, I've changed my pine settings to set the envelope sender to my "primary" E-mail address (i.e., it's always the same address, whereas I'd prefer for the envelope sender to match the From: in the header). Mozilla Mail handles this quite nicely. it can not only handle multiple addresses, but can handle different SMTP servers as well. I check 3 addresses, and send with 3 different SMTP settings, though I only 'use' the one address as the reply to. To keep them separate, I added an initial (i.e NTM) to differentiate the accounts when I compose a message, which makes it go out the correct SMTP server (i.e this box and server at work, as well as ISPs). Try it out, it is pretty slick. YMMV. -- Joe & Sesil Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871
Probably your SMARTHOST doesn't want you to relay mail through his/her server. Are you just trying to send mail? or setting up a mail server? If the former, just use a program like mutt, pine, Evolution or kmail to connect to your ISP's mail server and send your mail If the latter, you need to have a valid host name and MX record. I can "fix" the problem by removing the SENDMAIL_SMARTHOST from my sendmail.rc.config, but this is not satisfactory since some people's email systems won't accept email sent from me unless I use a SMARTHOST (I think this is because I don't have a "real" hostname and IP address, causing my mail to get killed by some spam filters).
I don't remember changing anything to cause this "Relaying denied" to start happening, but perhaps I messed something up before I left.
Anyone have a clue for me?

I am using Mutt for most mail, but I also have a PHP script that sends mail to port 25 so I need to set up sendmail to handle it. It was working fine for months but just stopped working sometime during the past four days.
