I would recommend this one: 1. First upgrade to SuSE 7.3, which gives you the 2.4.10 kernel 2. Then download and install the 2.4.16 kernel from the SuSE ftp site 3. Folks, In moving from a generic 7.1 pro (2.4.0 kernel) to a 7.3 but with the latest 2.4.17 (or other) kernel, what is a more desireable upgrade path? Update to 7.3 and then update the kernel, or update to the latest kernel and then upgrade to 7.3? I suspect it is better to upgrade to 7.3 first and then get the latest Suse kernel. Anyone used a 1394 Firewire Disk on SuSE 7.3 Pro?

I've yet to get any useful information about 1394 Firewire disk support under SuSE 7.3 Pro from the SuSE hardware database. Is anyone using 1394 Firewire disks under SuSE? You can get a large disk for the money on Firewire, which would seem to be fine for a nightly backup repository... Maxtor Direct offers a 160 GB 3000XT external disk, with 1394 FireWire, i.LINK interface, for $399.95. Seems like a lot of disk for the money, if it will work with SuSE 7.3... Chris Shaker

running suse 7.2, xserver 4.2, kernel 2.4.16, matrox g200 video card and cpd-200es sony monitor. I noticed that screensaver "space" and "pipes" which require gl do not work anymore. "morph" still works. Is this because I ran switch2xf86_glx? what does this do and how to undo it? thanks.

Problems after long power failure

Version 7.3 using KDE and ext3 file system After the power went out, and my UPS died, I have had some problems. One, CUPS died. I fixed it by reinstalling, as the cupsd wouldn't work right, and just ran my CPU useage to 100% when trying to queue a print job. (Just telling you so you see I have fixed something myself, be it the cheaters way out). But two other problems: 1. I found in the xconsole that runs in KDE the following: modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-180 I am not sure what this means. Anybody able to assist? 2. Also, what controls how often fsck runs on startup? Also, is this used on ext3? Thanks so much! Harry G

Changing screen resolution with KDE

Perhaps this is a silly question. Here it goes: I have configured two screen resolutions using Sax. So now I can switch resolution just pressing CTRL-ALT and +/-. However, KDE desktop keeps in large resolution when I switch to lower and I have to scroll... How can I resize the desktop whenever I do change the resolution? Cheers!

[SLE] Help with USB smartmedia reader on SuSE 7.3- Solved

This sounds like an issue I had. Let me be sure I understand your situation. If you use the rear USB ports (the ones integrated to your motherboard) it works OK. If you use the front mounted USB ports, it does not work. Is this correct? Do you get any messages in /var/log/messages when you try to plug a device in the front USB ports? Perhaps even something like this: usb.c: USB device not accepting new address=2 (error=-110) If this desribes your issue, you may not have a bad port on the front. For me at least, this problem was a hardware issue, well, more of a sloppy motherboard mounting issue. On my case (a Lian-Li) the plugs that conect the front USB ports are not a single unit but discrete plugs (one per pin). There are five connections: VBUS, D-, D+, GND, D+, D-. In connecting the front USB ports, what I manged to do was to reverse the D+ and D- conections. This allowed a device to be powers and look like it should work, but when the drivers tried to send back an address for the device to use, it was being sent to the wrong pin. When I swapped the pins, my USB devices worked correctly. Were the USB connector a single unit, this mistake could not be made, but if you happen to have a configuration like mine, you might have the same issue that I had. Hi, I've bought a Sony CDRW 1611-82E that's an IDE/ATAPI CD Writter. When I try to burn a CD with cdrecord, system hangs hard. There're a lot of messages from kernel related to scsi emulation, the last one is something about "scsi timeout" and then a kernel core dump and system fully locked. This is a SuSE 7.3 with the default distribution kernel. I've added lilo entries "ide-scsi=hdx" for both, CD-Writter (secondary ide master) and CD-Reader (secondary ide slave). I've note a extrange thing when I load the ide-scsi module. Suggestions on Linux RAID configurations for web and database server

Hello SuSE folkz, I'm working on creating database and web server. I've got two Iwill side bus ATA-100 Raid controllers and four IBM 40GB ATA-100 HD's. Plus one extra HD for /boot partition. Now I have to decide what software Raid configuration would be suitable for a webserver bound with SQL database. If I create straight Raid0 configuration of all four drives, a single disk failure will crash the whole system. Reliability is MTBF/4. Not good. If I create Raid1-0 configuration (mirrored Raid0) I'll be wasting the half of my HD space and get only some improvement in HD reading but not writing. Reliability is MTBF/2. I little bit better but not perfect If I create Raid5 configuration, I'll save my disc space and get reliability MTBFx4, but I'll loose an edge in reading and writing. Could somebody suggest please from the practical perspectives what Raid schema is a most preferable for the web and database server configuration. Also you mentioned sendmail.mc file, I do not seem to have this particuliar file. Did you use the ide-scsi emulation? In that case your cd's changed to sr0 and further instaed of hd*. You can got to /dev and link sr* to the cd's as mentioned in fstab. Hi, All this recent talk of setting up mutt with fetchmail-procmail has got me interested again in mutt. I've always stuck with gui mailers with built-in smtp because it was so easy , when required to use a ISP's smtp. So as I understand it now, I can send mail from my system with sendmail, to my ISP's smtp server, if I set it's value in SENDMAIL_RELAY ? If I do this, is it required that my local desktop machine have a FQDN? Using the YOU updater, I see it writes the update flies in file:/var/lib/YaST/patches/i386/update/7.3/patches. There are a lot of .new files and .installed files. Are the .new files not installed? If not, how can I install them? Harry G

hey, i've a question about knode also, is there any way to select multiple posts for download? kinda like a batch job? pan allows this by just clicking on the message to highlight it, and ctl+s to save, additional messages are then able to be selected and saved also. pan, however is rather suirrelly on my sparc, knode is more stable. If you downloaded the pathc from a non SuSe site you will get all kinds of errors as standard SuSE installes the sources for the SuSE kernel. You need the 'normal' kernel sources for a standard patch to work. But still i get errors so this is no garentee (how do i write that word?) Hi, I have a AMD mobo and that is different. In SuSE Database look op 'geforce'. THey suggest you install new versions of Sax2, hwinfo and pam_devperm. It helped for some people. I also had to install kernel 2.4.16 and xfree 4.2 before te solved the problem. opera v 5 problem

My daughter and I have both SuSe 7.3 with Opera 5 installed. We have both the same internet bank connection. I am able to do my banking business, my daughter can not make contact with the bank. Opera version 6 and Konquerer do not work with this connection for whatever reason. I want to compare our opera setups and would like to know which files contain the important configuration information. Somebody can help there? --

I have run this progman display on top of Win95 and win98 for 7 years now, without a problem. Tonite I decided to try Mozilla. I downloaded and installed it. It ran, kind of slowly, and then I couldn't shut it down, it crashed, and then when I gave the machine the 3 finger salute --I guess that's what I did, I don't really remember--progman will no longer display in partial screen. I like to have the progman, with some windows apps below, on the green screen, like DOS, My Computer, Windows Explorer. I beg again, anyone with Windows experience who can help me get this back working, please help--doug

Interesting ppp issue

I can not figure this out. When I use a dialup, the first attempt after booting works fine most times But on the second attempt, it normally fails to work, stopping at: password: --> Looks like a password prompt. --> Sending: (password) This is me...is this you? Linux partitioning

Can Linux filesystems be made at the back of a hard disk ? Would creation of the filesystem at the back of the hard disk allow Linux to boot ? I have 40Gb hard disk, the first 32GB is allocted to NTFS and FAT32 . I am using Partion Magic Pro 7. This is on my main hard disk. netbooting ultrasparc

Hi, I am trying to net boot my ultrasparc using a suse7.3 version. The problem is that the linux kernel gets loaded but not the root file system even after setting the NFS persmissions in the /etc/exports file. There is another method given using the initrd. I am laying my hands on it , but the problem is that i have to use mknbi command for tagging the initrd with it. And when i use the commnad mknbi-linux zImage.......as given in the doc provided with suse , zImage is not identified as linux kernel image. My question is : how do we get zImage out of vmlinuz64..since what i am sending to my client is a.out created after running a utility elftoaout on unzipped vmlinuz64. - the kernel on the client gives a message Kenrel Panic : cannot find the root and i wish to scream. Evolution error quandry

Question: Specifically what does " evolution-shell-WARNING **: Cannot access Bonobo/ConfigDatabase on wombat: (IDL:OAF/GeneralError:1.0)" refer to? I've gone through all the steps (dependency hell...) with the rpms and/or source. I'm still getting this error. The only "non-resolved" dependencies are libpisock.so.3 is needed by perl-PDA-Pilot-0.8.0-105 libpisock.so.3 is needed by kdepim-kpilot-2.2.1-25 libpisock.so.3 is needed by jpilot-0.99-108 but libpisock.so.3 **IS** on my system and **IN** the path. I tried installing with the --nodeps flag, but I still get this. Any and all help appreciated!

Yast Can't find CD-ROM

I made some changes to my system to make my CD-ROM and CD-R work with my recording programs and desktop apps. Now when I start yast2 to install software, it can't locate my CD-ROM or CD-RW to install software from. How do I setup my CD-xxx to work with yast2???? Thanks, Tom

So here it comes: I have this configuration Cpu 300Mhz PII, mainbord Intel440Lx, 324Mb Ram, Geforce 2 Mx 400 graphics card. It all worked nice until I reseted my bios. After that my Pc complecty locks away when I try to switch from grphics mode to text mode. I can't turn off my computer from X because it can't get to the console and it stucks in the way. Embarrassing newbie-type questions

I want to upgrade my SuSE 7.3 system to kernel 2.4.16 in the hope of fixing a problem with my tape drive. I've downloaded the SuSE 2.4.16 kernel rpm : k_deflt-2.4.16-22.i386.rpm But I don't really know what to do with it. There are no instructions as far as I can see on the SuSE ftp server about how to install the new kernel. The README.XF86 file on the server only talks about how the new kernel will affect graphics cards. So my first embarrassing question is - how do I install the rpm? What options should I give the rpm command? And then do I just run lilo and reboot? Secondly, why is the rpm a mighty 12.5 MB when the current kernel is a mere 800k? What else is being installed? More importantly, if a lot of stuff is upgraded, how do I restore my old system if the new kernel screws everything up? I don't want to have to reinstall my entire SUSE system just to get rid of the new kernel. Finally, is this the right kernel for a pentium class machine? I'm running an Athlon XP and obviously want a kernel optimised for my processor. Any help would be appreciated. - Ken

Yep, you're right. I too out the @... and the ssl option, and then fetchmail downloaded all my mail. Now, if only I can find it!
