Remember, your mileage may vary! Umax scanners are very well supported by the SANE project, but the problem was getting it connected to the new Linux box in the first place. The Umax 1220S, which is about 3 years old, came with an ISA card, and the external connector is a DB25 plug. I had tried the ISA card in SuSE 7.0, and it was not recognised. This is not entirely surprising, since the SANE documentation notes that this type of bundled card is usually non-standard to some degree, and is unlikely to work well, if at all, with Linux. I therefore had to get a "proper" SCSI card for the new machine, but one which would not break the bank. The one I picked was the IWill SIDE-2930C, which uses an Advansys chip (which is well-supported in Linux), and only cost £30 (£17 now!). It is an 8-bit Ultra SCSI card, with 50-pin internal and external connectors, and was immediately recognised at install by SuSE 7.1. The next problem was then connecting this card to the scanner. This was solved by buying a D50-to-DB25 cable for £10.00 from Saturn Computers (www.6thPlanet.com) and using that to connect the card and the scanner. First, switch on the scanner (obvious, but not necessarily!). Install the package scsi in group ap. This contains a bundle of useful little utilities for dealing with SCSI. The other necessary packages, SANE and XSANE, are already installed by default on a Minimal + Office install. I knew the card had been picked up because of the messages in dmesg, and doing a lsmod showed that the advansys driver was loaded. Obviously, it is essential that you know what driver you need for your card, and ensure that the system has that loaded. As root, change to /bin and run: ./rescan-scsi-bus.sh This will bring the scanner to the attention of the system. You should get output like the following: Host adapter 0 (advansys) found Host adapter 1 (ide-scsi) found Scanning for device 0 0 5 0 .... NEW: Host: scsi0 Channel:00 Id:05 Lun:00 The first host adapter is the IWill card, and the second host adapter is a SCSI emulator for the IDE CD-writer on the box. As root, run: sgcheck This should give output like: device host/channel/ID/LUN type Vendor Make /dev/sg0 0/0/5/0 Scanner Umax Astra 1200S Next, ensure everyone has permission to use the scanner. As root, run: chmod 777 /dev/sg0 Finally, check that your user can see it by running, as the user: scanimage -L This will ask scanimage, a command-line scanning program, to list the scanners it can see. You should get output like the following: device `umax:/dev/sg0' is a Umax Astra 1200S flatbed scanner Next, launch the GIMP, and select File -> Acquire -> Device Dialog. The SANE setting and preview panels should open. Set a photo on the scanner, and click Acquire Preview in the preview panel. You should hear the reassuring noise of the scanner head rolling down the scanner, and the preview panel will show your photo. You can make adjustments to the settings as required (Chapter 10 of the SuSE Applications manual is a great quick-reference here!), and then click Start in the Settings panel. The final scan will then be delivered into the GIMP. (One tip - to select the visible area of the scan (the "marching ants"), use the right mouse button to shift its position, and the left mouse button to move its boundaries.) Hope this helps. AIM clients.

Has anyone been able to connect to AOL's IM service using KAIM, GAIM or Everybuddy? I lost my connection at work today using GAIM and couldn't get back on. I got home and none of them work..but the office AIM client works fine. Another problem, this time KDE2

Hi again, Sorry for the stupid question BUT I am still a very newbie: My screensaver in KDE2 doesn't work and I have no idea where to even look. I set it up in the menus at Preferences>look and feel> screensaver, and all that happens is that at the appropriate time the screen freezes up. It unfreezes in exactly the same manner as would a screensaver; that is, if I move the mouse or touch a key, the screen updates, the clock moves from the time at which the desktop froze to the current time. This would seem to indicate it's TRYING to turn on the screensaver but something's blocking it. Can anyone offer any advice? Hello Damon and friends, Perhaps I didn't explain so well. There is no problem at all to start sax. It runs perfect in a VGA color screen... then thew troubles come when I setup the xvga16 server and try to start up my xwindows. I belive sax is already using vga16 xserver when runs... so, at least vga16 should work for my old box. By the way, it has a built-in S3 Virgie VGA. Upgrade to 7.2 breaks KDE!

I upgraded 7.1 to 7.2 and now I find myself unable to run KDE :-( When I ran 7.1, I upgraded KDE to 2.1.2 from SuSE's ftp server. Maybe this is the problem, but what can I do? Problems configuring basic VGA on XServer

Hello susers. I tried to setup an old IBM 486 box to run Xserver with just VGA by means of Sax. Althought I can start Sax (which I presume runs in a xvga16 server) I never reach to configure my server. Framebuffer doesn't work in this box. I think is too old... One more question, how do I setup/run this machine's xserver from a remote computer for which I well know graphics cards configuration? suggestions please? Installation Problem with APC UPS support

Hi all, I'm looking for advice on how to best address this problem. I would like to install UPS support on my SuSE box. Nick, Included are the changes I think should be made. Although I am not an expert, I have a similar setup with multiple virtual hosts. Hope this helps. Apache configuration problem

Hi, everyone, In the attached apache config file, I have set up a virtual host for www.nickselby.de (to run my site locally, test scripts etc). I was under the impression that setting up another name-based host was as simple as announcing the name in the config file, then copying the settings from www.nickselby.de and changing the name to the new virtual host (in this case www.flyguides.de) But when I did just that, apache said it couldn't resolve the host. I created the proper root directory and cgi-bin directory, and the Access.conf and other files config looks for are there. www.nickselby.de works like a charm - perl, cgi SSI, etc. But now when restarting apache after editing the config file and stopping apache, the error I get is linux:/usr/local/httpd/virtual # /etc/rc.d/apache start Starting httpd [ PHP4 LDAP PERL ][Thu Jun 28 12:46:42 2001] [error] Cannot resolve host name www.flyguides.de --- ignoring! Any clues anyone? Running Solaris Install Scripts on SUSE 7.1 ????

Hi All, I am a convert Linux user who has changed from a Windoze user about 6 months ago. I have purchased from SUN Education a series of Java based Tutorials which install from CD with a Windoze .exe file or a Solaris install.sh. I have tried to install the software using the Solaris script and when it tried to use df to work out how much free space is available it errors out, and wont install, it also reports that I dont have permissions on my home directory. Does anyone know of a way of converting the Solaris scripts or of a way to install the Sun JavaTutor programmes on my SUSE 7.1 laptop, I have installed JDK 1.3 and it works fine. SuSE 7.2 and leafnode

Hi All Why can i get leafnode to work on 7.2 ?? If i do a upgrade from 7.1 no prob but if i do a clean install it don't work ?? what's up! Ther is no diff in the host.xxxx files or config I hafe manage to get the index home with leafnode and can see it from knode but when i try to get som header+body home with fetchnews -vvv it connect to my ISP but don't get any thing. When i try view a group in knode i get can't connect to server ?? Now you might ask why i don't just stick with a upgrade from 7.1 the answer to that is, when i do a upgrade all is keept in english, but with a clean install i get danish mc/gpg/etc.. and i realy like that. so if you know how to do that after a upgrade, that will be the answer for me to. 7.1 - Online-Update - "no network-connection"

hi folks, i just installed 7.1 and set up my network (ip/dns/gateway/...). i can surf the internet, as expected. but if i try to use the YAST2's "Online-Update"-feature, it says in a popup-window "Connect Error, There is no connection to network; please connect manually. my settings in the Online-Update-Tool are: "Manual Update" and "ftp.suse.com" as ftp-server. but where's the problem? pleeeaaaaase help! thanks in advance! cheers, florian

Go to SuSE's Portal and there is a HOWTO there written specifically for SuSE 7.1-7.2. I got my 48.8 MBs of fonts installed however, I do not know how to fix the fixed font. It picks some font. I do not know which font it picks. I thought there was a file called fonts.alias that tells XFS what fonts to substitute for another. If so, where is this file and how do I tell it to use some other font like Courier. In order to use TTF's you have to have them accessible. They don't come with KDE2 because KDE.org and SuSE are not suppose to redistribute them. Openssl problem need help (and sleep)
