Here's what I do to build Gnome apps on SuSE (which I do lots)
./configure --prefix=/opt/gnome --sysconfdir=/etc/opt/gnome --any --other --options-you=need
Thanx for the advice...but I tried to compile the latest gnome-utils (from Freshmeat of course) from source and got this: ./configure: gnome-config: command not found checking for gnome_window_icon_set_default_from_file in -lgnomeui... no configure: error: gnome-libs 1.0.59 or higher is required. I have the latest libs (or thought I did...) and gnome-config **is** in /opt/gnome/bin (so it should have seen it, correct?). This is my first serious foray into serious compiling (I usually try once, if it doesn't compile I look for an RPM, and if that doesn't work I curse the linux gods but remember that it is **still** better than m$ and wait until another release comes out...) Thanx for your time as well.
Dont let gnome make you feel inhibited about compiling stuff. Gnome is a right pig to compile, some of the stuff in it changed the way it is compiled/recognised in the newer versions, and thus tells you that you havent got the correct version of x because of conflicts. Its there fault ( gnome developers ) not yours. Heres a handy tutorial that helped me http://www.karubik.de/gig/index.html dids

BTW, check out the site and it looks great. Definitely going into the bookmark file...
Thanx for the advice...but I tried to compile the latest gnome-utils (from Freshmeat of course) from source and got this:
OK, I just grabbed the latest source from ftp.gnome.org, and I'm going to build it while I type this mail, I'll paste what happens in... install/gnome-utils-1.4.0.1> ./configure --prefix=/opt/gnome --sysconfdir=/etc/opt/gnome That went as I expected (ie no errors) so let's have a look at your prob...
./configure: gnome-config: command not found
You say that gnome-config definately is in /opt/gnome/bin - try running configure with --with-gnome=/opt/gnome
checking for gnome_window_icon_set_default_from_file in -lgnomeui... no configure: error: gnome-libs 1.0.59 or higher is required.
This may be resolved by the same flag as above - specifying where Gnome is should make configure use -L/opt/gnome/lib, if it doesn't, then try using: --with-gnome-libs=/opt/gnome/lib
I have the latest libs (or thought I did...) and gnome-config **is** in /opt/gnome/bin (so it should have seen it, correct?).
provided that directory is in your path...

heh, look at it as a learning curve, that's one great thing about Linux, you learn so much from using it, which in turn empowers you, the user, to really control your system the way you want to...
Thanx for your time as well.

I presume you are building as root, which by default doesn't have /opt/gnome/bin in $PATH. => add /opt/gnome/bin to $PATH before running configure. Ralf

That was it! All this time I've been building as root! (I figured, if I have to login as root to 'make install', I might as well compile the whole thing as root!). I tried to compile as a user, logged in as root to install, and it went fine! **3** years as a linux user and I never knew that! I'm sure I read it in a doc somewhere, but it never stuck... Thanx guys...
