Seriously, having used this distro (7.1) for a little while now, I am really appreciating it. Superb work, SuSE (and KDE and X). A few glitches, but otherwise simply excellent. The competition (esp RatHead) really has its work cut out for it. This distro is totally worth the money. I want to encourage anyone who can afford it to plunk down the clams for the CD's. OTOH the ftp site, now that upgrades have been merged into the distro tree, is more convenient than ever, if that's your fancy. Corvin -- Corvin Russell <corvinr(a)sympatico.ca>

KDE 2.1.1

Hi: Is KDE 2.1.1 a big improvement over KDE 2.1? I see that some SuSE users are having some difficulties with the installation. If the hanging on logout is fixed I might be tempted to download it, even though it is a chore over a 56k modem. KDE 2.1 was allmost 100 Mb. -- Cheers, Jonathan

Multilink ISDN problem

I have a 3Com external ISDN modem, which I've been using with SuSE since before version 5.0. I always use wvdial with the setup command "AT S80=1" to configure the modem for multilink. A standard "ATDT xxx-xxxx" command links both channels into a single connection. Up through v6.4, multilink dialing has always worked right out of the box. With v7.0 and v7.1, however, only the first line ever connects. I know the problem is not wvdial, because the same thing happens if I use minicom and dial the ISDN modem manually. Anybody have any idea on what's happening? I really need to move up to the latest version of SuSE, but not if I can't use the web at full speed. SuSE 7.1 HELP

I've upgraded my desktop-machine from SuSE 6.4 (kernel 2.2.14) to SuSE 7.1, intending to use kernel 2.4. When I select the 2.4 kernel in yast, it seems to install it, reruns lilo... and I reboot, only to end up with the 2.2.18 again... I've tried this several times (even selecting 2.4 for i386 doesn't work). Help? Kind regards Guy

NFSD and Kernel 2.4 series

Hi there I'm having a strange problem with nfsd after upgrading to kernel 2.4 series. I've been trying many different releases and now i'm runing the latest test pre8 and everytime I would get the following error while trying to start nfsd. root@athlon:/sbin/init.d > ./nfsserver restart Shutting down kernel based NFS serverexportfs: could not open /proc/fs/nfs/exports for locking done Starting kernel based NFS serverlockdsvc: Function not implemented nfssvc: Function not implemented failed It is strange that I've been unable to get it to work with so many different versions I tried. Hi I've installed SuSE 7.1 on my system with kernel 2.4.0, and updated it with k_deflt_24-2.4.2-4.i386.rpm from the ftp-site. This works reasonably, but I want to make some small changes. Therefor I downloaded the sources from the ftp-site, lx_sus24-2.4.2.SuSE-5.i386.rpm, and installed them. I've tried to recompile the sources by using 'make cloneconfig', but the resulting kernel responds differently than the default one from the 2.4.2 rpm. Question: am I using the correct sources? If not, which ones should I use, or is it the wrong kernel-rpm? Or is de .config I create with 'make cloneconfig' not correct? What am I doing wrong? Thanks! Cheers, Cor. suse(a)csoft.nu
