Missing title bars in Gnome

Does anyone have an idea why my title bars are missing in Gnome? Seems like I cant move my windows around or - X what am I doing wrong?/ Thanks rob

well you didn't look correctly. it gives a list of packages with their contents. hey I asked for a database backend with search capability but nobody on this list seems to think we need this. I think we are the only two who ever look for stuff and what packages they came from. I mainly house all my mailing list subscriptions from a machine at home so I can browse them from anywhere. My main concern were the staic IP's, not the upstream bandwidth, we also consdiered running a local loop T-1 circuit from a friends space at a hosting facilty but the set-up was going to be $1500 and 1 year contract. I thought I had a contract with Pac Bell but after talking with someone there last week, I do not think that I do. I have had it over a year anyway so I am not for sure. Yes, it is considered 'enhanced' DSL. I thought that 7.1 would allow you to choose gnome vs kde2 ? Whats involved in intalling and trying out gnome ? Can you switch between gnome , kde2 and the other installed window managers ?

How To be my own ISP? Verizon stinks!

I hate my ISP! I hate my ISP! I HATE MY ISP!!!! Now, does anybody want to know what I really think of verizon? Anyhow, I'm wondering if there is a way to get a home connection to the internet with a fixed IP and 24x7 DSL with decent duplex through. I'll run my own mail and news servers rather than suffereing my ISPs idea of service. TIA for any suggestions, Steve

netscape 4.76 closes all the time

Does anyone experience this... I'm browsing the web as usual, and all of a sudden, netscape just closes. I can then relaunch it and continue on until the next time it closes. You make no mention of the outrageous pricing for the W2K server offerings. Again, every one of my servers is covered by my $70. And with companies like Compaq, HP and IBM standing up for Linux, you know it is going to work on their hardware, and it does. I also have remote installation options for my SuSE setups, such as CD-ROM, FTP (from CD, local server or Internet) and a couple of others I forget right now. These are akin to my options with W2K, i.e. CD-ROM and RIS (Remote Installation Services). So deployment time and effort are about even. Documentation ? Are you not impressed with the wealth of documentation both in the box and on your installed SuSE system ? MAN pages, HTML pages, online help, the SuSE Support Database, and 6 wonderful manuals. Have you seen the documentation that comes with MS Windows these days ? It is scant, to put it kindly. And you complain that the manual explains nothing of the server side of SuSE. Well, with about 1600 applications on the CDs, and a 1000 page manual to go at, I think you would be hard pressed to introduce most of the apps and services, let alone give a full explanation of them. Stop killing trees, and start the using the online docs; it's what they're there for. I am sorry to hear that you had such trouble configuring SuSE to recognise your video card. Maybe you should drop them a quick message at feedback(a)suse.com, and let them know what model video card you have and what error messages you received. You could also make use of the 90 day installation support that your $70 bought you. And before you start thinking to yourself, "Here we go, another Linux zealot", I would like you to know that I am both an MCSE and CNE, and I work in an environment consisting of Novell, Solaris, SunOS, Linux, NT4 and W2K. My ire comes from your writing a very biased and unfair article, which seems to lack the air of professionalism apparent in serious articles on these matters. Stuart Powell.

[OT] Kernel Compilation Speed Issue!

Dear All, I recently "upgraded" from a CYRIX 333 [runs about 262MHz ;o)] to an AMD K7/ 1Ghz processor. Whilst before I could quite happily go and make myself a nice cup of tea, I now no longer have time :-/ I feel that this is ridiculous, and wish to lodge an informal complaint and ask you to rewrite GCC et al in a mickeysoft fashion [very bloated and slow ;o)] so that I can enjoy a nice cup of tea. <grins> It is such a surprise! kernel / modules woes....

A while back you had a problem during bootup with modprobe errors on sound stuff, and the usbmgr failure. Could you tell me how you finally got this sorted out? I have run into this problem again. I reinstalled 7.1 and chose only the 2.4 kernel. After installation I built a new kernel to try & get my joystick working. The "stock" /lib/modules/2.4xxx directory did not have many modules in it - mostly sound related stuff. I changed the processor choice to AMD, made sure that sound was included in the kernel, along w/ picking my specific soundcard, etc. Built the kernel no problem, ran make modules, make bzlilo and make modules_install. All seemed to go just fine. Then I rebooted. It couldn't find the sound modules, couldn't find Ipchains (I probably missed that in the config), and the usbmgr failed (I had turned on usb since I have a usb scanner). I looked in /lib/modules and found a new 2.4 directory - again without much in it....??? So I tried copying the original .config to /usr/src/linux and made only a couple minor changes. While running xconfig I noticed that the proper joystick modules were already chosen as modules. I thought this was odd since the only modules I could find in the "stock" /lib/modules/2.4xxx directory were soundcard related. In fact there was a LOT of stuff chosen as modules in the original .config. Why don't any of these show up in lib/modules/2.4xxx? Anyway, after my few minor changes I rebuilt the kernel, etc. Still the same problem. What is the deal w/ kernels & modules in 7.1? This used to be so simple.... When you do a fresh install & choose 1 kernel, you get three kernel choices in the boot menu - all three booting the same kernel image. Why? This is confusing.
